I can see Mr Hall seeing this as a promotion of things he doesn't like.
Well, boo-hoo.
I've got a black 'custom' brand one. Really hard to google anything about them but it's Japanese from the 70s I believe. It's got just about everything spot on for a ric except a double truss.
From my own research "Custom" was a 70s EU importer brand (possibly from the Netherlands) which may have had some distribution in Scotland. I owned a Custom-brand Gibson LP Special copy, which I found at an Edinburgh car boot, I've subsequently seen 4 or 5 Customs come up for sale locally but not elsewhere in the UK. My LP was a Moridaira build but I don't know who made their Fakers.
You might want to edit your post to remove the name of the guy who made your pickguards and TRC's - it would be a shame if he got any hassle from RIC over it, and I think they have some sort of trade dress registration on the TRC shape.
Worth noting Hall does own copyright on the TRC shape, but oddly, not the scratchplate. Don't know why that is, but it's probably not because it's a poor, lazy design which spoils the look of the bass, even though it does.

Just been thinking - that's a hell of a death toll of the frontmen of the high-profile bands of that era: Cobain, Layne Staley, Scott Weiland & now Cornell. Eddie Vedder must be crapping himself...
-
Awful, tragic news. I was a big Soundgarden & Audioslave fan, predominantly because of Cornell. One of the best rock vocalists of the last 30 years. Never got to see either band live, really regretting that.

Got bored & turned off after 2 minutes - does he go on to do anything other than go pockata-pockata-bloopity-pockata-bloop, very quickly? I'm guessing not. Stunt bass, eh?
-
What's interesting is that he describes it as a "custom" and describes his original receipt from Roka's as "where it was made". The receipt itself says "1x Custom P-J Bass". Wonder if Roka's were putting together their own parts basses with Fender necks at the time? Odd one.

Bitsa. Mid-80s MIJ Jazz Special neck on a body (+ decent hardware) of indeterminate origin. Interesting bass but I'd think the asking price was a bit ambitious. To the tune of £400 or so.

No brand cheapo, from Samick, the factory that made Hondo. I'm guessing the inspection sticker looks like this:

Collection of unusual Doug Wilkes basses
Bassassin replied to oldslapper's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I quite like the term "None freted" though
It's nice to see Ebay terminology evolving. I'll miss "frettles", though. -
Any famous guitarists good at playing bass?
Bassassin replied to Jenny_Innie's topic in General Discussion
I assume Ms Innie's unconvinced status is based on who she considers to be a "good" bassist. Which so far doesn't include any of the suggestions other than Paul McC. I'd have said Nick Beggs would be a contender but he's probably a useless bassist like all the others. -
To be fair, that's what the Les Paul was designed for,
I admit I wasn't around, but I don't think music involved many big rock chords and screaming solos in 1952.

Where do people get these prices from?
Bassassin replied to Roger2611's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Still only £32 shame its collection only
That's what I thought! Went for £97, pretty good score for whoever got it. -
Since I'm currently not in a gigging band, I'm playing a lot more guitar than bass, that being how I compose. So if I'm now a guitard, that's fine with me. Although I'd prefer to be called a guit@rshole.

Anyone interested in a potential bargain Thunder 1-A might want to keep an eye on this: http://www.ebay.co.u...ar/282455983883 -
I had a Squier VMJ, was gorgeous. Wish I hadn't sold it.
Isn't the black overspray on the rear upper forearm contour supposed to be to disguise the plywood ? Looks ok to me though
On an old MIJ like this it's more likely to be mahogany butcher-block with front & back veneers. That's what my Columbus Jazz was.
-
I've had a whole bunch of Columbuses - FWIW none of them were made by Matsumoku, Fujigen or any of the big "lawsuit" era manufacturers. Decent, solid midrange stuff for the most part, good necks/frets & OK hardware - definitely wouldn't turn my nose up at a freebie!
-
Ta for the response. The neck on mine's a fatty, alright but just feels like a chunky P neck, measures 42mm at the nut. Maybe using the same neck for 4 & 5 versions only applies to bolt-necks - BigRedX's fretless 5 is way wider than mine: http://basschat.co.u...194-lace-helix/ MIne did take a fair amount of work to make it play the way I wanted - if I'd paid list price for it (£799 at the time) I would've been pretty hacked off at the standard of setup & some of the finishing. As it was I got mine for about £200 off a guy who didn't actually play, he'd just wanted a cool-looking "guitar" for his flat!
-
Travesty / tragedy. However looks like all the parts (apart from scratchplate) are original & the neck looks like a clean & possibly repairable break. Could be a decent project if it stays cheap enough.

Comedy pricing on old Thunder 1s comes up regularly. Ebay's full of dreamers with £300+ BINs, but a quick look at sold items makes it clear that they typically sell for £120 - £180. Same as it ever was... -
Had one. Total rubish bass IMO.
In what way? Genuinely interested, mine is, like I said, certainly marmite, but not rubish (sic) in any way. It's well constructed, plays nicely (although I did have to give it a proper setup) and sounds pretty decent when you give it some welly. Obviously it looks weird - but you must have liked the aesthetics or you wouldn't have had one in the first place, surely!

Happily I heard back from Thomann this morning, they'll cancel the pending transaction so I can have another go... We'll see how that turns out, then.
-
One bass? What, as in n+1?
-
Interesting. Yesterday I attempted to make my first purchase from Thomann (not bass related, I'm afraid!), and something screwed up with the order process meaning it didn't complete - so I'm left with a €325 payment pending on my Paypal account and no actual order, as far as I can tell. Emailed them this morning but so far have heard sod-all. Not too much of a problem as I can get PP to cancel the transaction, but unfortunate as Thomann beat everyone else's price on this item (a Fishman Tripleplay MIDI guitar pickup) by £50 - £100!
