1. Questions! OK - Paul, can't make very accurate or direct comparisons because the majority of basses I own that have P units have are fitted with DiMarzio Model Ps, the same as this! I like them because they're loud, seem to accentuate mids & are quite aggressive sounding, which tends to be what I want. I went with 500k pots which have made this a bit more clanky & snarly. Neck width is 42mm and it's a fairly shallow C-shape with quite a pronounced radius. All-up weight is about 10.4 lbs so unfortunately it is a bit of a boat anchor! Stance - nothing fancy with the wiring, just a series/parallel push/pull switch on the tone pot, which thins it out & calms it down a bit. Geek99 - there were indeed Jazz copies. These would have been sold as Daion, JooDee & Yamaki. There probably are a few around but I've never seen one. I'd happily give a home to the maple/pearl blocks one. J.
2. So, do you have to pay an extra six grand for someone to take it outside and fling it under a truck?
3. Thought it would be polite - and timely - to update this thread now the bass is done. In fairness my pics aren't a whole lot different to the original seller's because the bass wasn't too vile (on the outside!) when I got it. Now featuring the correct complement of knobs and matching strings! Flaky lacquer repaired with Superglue, 1200 grit & T-Cut... Managed to capture a bit of the flame on the neck here. Very pretty in real life, the lacquer's a fair bit darker than the pics show. A bit cleaner & tidier inside now, with lots of pretty-coloured wires and The World's Biggest Orange Drop. An entire portion, in fact. 500k pots help to liberate its inner Burnel. What's good is that everything works as it should, no problems with the truss rod gearbox and it's a pretty damn good player. It could do with a couple of frets dressed up the dusty end & once I get around to that I think it'll be the equal of the Squier SQ I had a few years back - which was the only P that I regretted selling. So, very happy with this, it looks & sounds like a proper vintage rock beast - and I think I've finally got a P I might actually use! The only downsides are that my back will hate me, and that I'll definitely have to sell my lovely early 70s Ibanez 2366B... J.
4.
Aria pro ii rsb performer for £100 ono, I'm quite tempted by this, not sure. https://www.gumtree....kups/1162184356 + an Eros eb2 https://www.gumtree....case/1162316674
Buy the RSB. Just buy it. If it was near me I'd buy it. Twice, if I could. The EB3 copy's nice too, early 70s Matsumoku build - only ever seen one or two of these before. But buy the Aria. J.
5. I've always found superglue/1200 grit/T-Cut will fix most things. Literally!
6.
I have seen the Dio band... they've been looking for a vocalist for aaaaages. Not going to be an easy search!
I have too. When I saw them they had a tall, bald singer who sounded nothing at all like Dio and a bassist who plainly hadn't learned any of the songs. Weird.
7. Cheers for that Jack - should do my own research! J.
8. Good deal. Used AxesRUs for years, they're always well-priced compared with the likes of All Prats.
9. Serious mix 'n' match bodgefest, that looks to me. I don't know a huge amount about these, but this (mostly) looks MIJ to me, am I right in thinking these are not particularly sought-after by Voxanistas? Neck & body definitely don't look related so the hardware (which I'm 99% sure is MIJ) may be donated. Might be an interesting project for £125 or so but this price is a joke. Jon.
10. Thunders (MIJ ones, anyway) are great. And this is still here: http://basschat.co.u...-dropped-to-l60 Sixty quid. SIXTY QUID??? J.
11. Ages ago someone gave me a Gibson LP Custom Shop hard case. Had a clearout & ended up sticking it on Ebay (99p, no reserve) and it got bid up to about £170 - which someone happily paid! Maybe Gibbo guitar cases are special (I wouldn't know) but plainly people can and do pay silly money for a box with a handle. Jon.
12.
The Thunder I cheap and nasty? Compared to the 2 & 3 has a bolt on neck, lighter bridge, and just one pickup, but it's still a great bass and miles better than most of the genuinely cheap and nasty alternatives available at the time.
There were some Korean-made Thunders (a bolt-neck MIK T2 came up on Ebay a few months back) and I'd doubt they were built to the same standard as the Matsumoku originals. Maybe Matski's was one of those. J.
13. Tiny Talman! Fancied a shortie for a while, could well be that the only question is which colour!
14. Recent completed listings from Ebay. Prices are variable but there is broadly an immense gulf between what some sellers want, and what people are actually prepared to pay: http://www.ebay.co.u...=p2045573.m1684 I wouldn't pay much more than £150. Which is pretty much what they've always been. Jon.
15. If he reads this, he'll be eggstatic at all the publicity he's getting. Ova the moon, in fact.
16.
Try: http://www.matsumoku.org/
This is a post-Matsumoku, probably Korean-made bass. They don't talk about those! J.
17. Sending that to our drummer & guitarist.
18. My first though was that I'd base it on a 5er - wide neck & designed to take extra string tension. Maybe I should try this on my Peavey Zephyr... Jon.
19. Lovely. I think you got the better end of that swap. Get on to the Vintage Ibby FB group and see if anyone's got any spare tuners in their parts box. Jon.
20. Cool-looking bass. Not familiar with this exact model but it's very close to the Aria Avante Steve Bailey sig: Dunno how cheap it is - but I'd buy it, always liked the look of these. You might get some info from one of the APII Facebook groups: https://www.facebook...oups/AriaProII/ https://www.facebook...96371477217872/ Jon.
21. Oh, I like that - way more sensible than the original. J.
22. I remember these from BW a few years ago, the guy in the link above got a batch built for some forum members. Bach do - or at least did - some nice stuff, including rather lovely interpretations of certain Basses That Must Not Be Named. Or at least, sold on BC... Jon.
23.
I mention it again, just because I am a little in love with it, but my latest B2B is a P/J and very nice too.
Did you post any pics of it? Never seen a P/J B2! J.
24. The seller admits the logo's a dodgy sticker, at least. Quite amusing how he's stuck a bit of insulating tape over the MIJ stamp on the neckplate! Grant/Grantsons were mostly pretty low-end stuff, had a few myself (admittedly not an EB-2) and they were nothing special. This will be a plywood Chushin build, same as most Columbus & Avon of the early 70s era. The mudbucker will be a low-output single-coil rattling around in that huge square case. J.
25. Don't think they ever did a J/J B2A, unfortunately. Would far prefer that to the nasal EMG guitar pickups in mine. J.
