Heres a bundle for the builders amongst you http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...TRK:MESELX:IT... All gotta go. More to follow
Any danger you'd part the SX P out & flog me the neck for buttons? Doubt it but I thought I'd ask! Always fancied a L/H neck on a R/H bass - I could defret it for my "interesting" Jazz project! Jon.
Jap - but not Crap!
I'm told it's a MiJ .. & its heading my way! Hopefully! When it arrives in 10 days or so, i'll let you know,,
It's very probably MIJ, and might be a Kasuga - but if so, not an exact model I've seen before. Will you be up for whipping off the scratchplate & taking a few pics of pups/'tronics/body routing? Lovely bass & a great score there. J.

The saddest pic ever on ebay
Bassassin replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I can't imagine how rubbish internet porn must look on a phone... I dunno, kids these days... Jon. -
I've accumulated loads of basses & sold more than I own, there are no keepers here. There are some I've had for donkey's years - my twisted-necked Aria RSB Deluxe, and Hohner B2A I've had from new since the mid-80s, there are some gorgeous, rare & irreplaceable JapCraps, there are some that look like sh!t and play like a dream. But they've all got their price. Some I might have a pang of regret selling, but I still would for the right reason. I don't know what that is though, it hasn't happened yet. Jom.
Saw a couple of these today. I didn't know they made them! They looked the part and felt pretty nice (bit heavy, I thought, but I've only handled a couple of real ones). Are they any good? (Apologies if this has been answered before.) Guitar & Bass magazine really rate Bass Collection's Jazz and Precision copies, but I've not seen a review of these. (Why did the makers choose such a stupid brand name?)
I've not seen these before but as far as I can tell from the not-very-clear pics, they're identical to the current model of Rockinbetter, and most people who've played these rate them. Had a look and there are 2 different versions of this available on The Bass Centre's site - the only difference being that the "Plus" version apparently has checker binding - you can't tell from the rubbish pics. Both versions are spectacularly and ridiculously overpriced. If you're thinking of buying a Faker though - buy this one. If it's not already sold. J.

No idea how music retail hierarchy works really - I'd guess the dealer network is the distributor's responsibility and obviously the distributor here - Tokai UK (or whatever other trade names they might operate under) is who's supplying RockinFakers - and quite possibly blurring the lines about what they actually are. So if Tokai Gakki took any interest beyond sales figures of official product I would guess their beef would be with the distributor rather than individual dealers. Did you read any of the stuff about the "Fakai" Tokai LP clones in Canada? The story was that the Canadian importer for Tokai couldn't obtain official Tokais with the spec they required, so they bought in guitars from a Korean factory & distributed them badged as Tokai. The dealers had no reason to think they weren't what they said they were, but I don't think I ever read what the upshot was, or if Tokai Gakki themselves got involved at all. Seems the Fakais were better spec than the "real" copies. J.
Either way I would like to know what Tokai Japans take on things is.
As far as the Rockinbetters are concerned in real terms it wouldn't make any difference because there's no Tokai 4001/4003 copy (and there never has been) for Rockinbetters to compete with. Gorgeous looking Futurama P-Bass for £299
Bassassin replied to Stuee's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Edit: Futurama versus Sue Ryder P bass. Let the battle commence.
Auntie Sue FTW. She'll sell you six basses for the price of one Futurama. Speaking of which, the neck wood's lovely but the rest of it's 'orrible: nasty, tacky-looking hardware, very ugly and suspicious (well-hidden edges) sunburst, all for the price of a used MIJ Fender! You'd have to be a mental to chuck money at that. J. -

It's just a Precision copy with a brand name some people have heard of before. Nothing any more special than that. Nothing to do with Tokai, but I suppose it's possibly from the same Chinese factory that makes low-end, licensed brand cheapo Tokais. But like Rockinbetters, that doesn't make it a Tokai. Jon. -
Rickenfaker Sorry if it's been discussed but out of interest what is this one?
It's about the prettiest one I've ever seen, and one of the most accurate. I have no idea who made it - or even if it's MIJ, but it's a stunner. J.

The body made me think of a modified Washburn B20 Stage: In fact I'd bet that's what the design's based on - which is why the identical lower half works, and the top looks like a chopped up mistake. The headstock, on the other hand, is just a complete mess. The seller talks about this as though it's some kind of sought-after rarity (OK, I know it's Ebay!) but is/was O'Hagen a "proper" builder? This just looks like a typical knocked-up-in-a-shed lumpy piece of junk, like all these efforts by people with zero woodworking ability & even less aesthetic sense. Jon.

Joey's Bass Notes is a great site for anything Rick-related, not just Faker recognition. A review of the Kimbara-branded Faker (made by Matsumoku) from the 70s claimed construction & finish was superior to the original. A lot of the high-end Jap Fakers were built to a very high standard, & many surviving ones seem to have withstood the ravages of time & abuse better than contemporary originals. If you know your Ricks, Fakers are dead easy to spot - none of them were built to be counterfeits so they never tried to imitate every detail. J.

There's this bloke called Squire who sometimes plays some old bit of 70s JapCrap - an Electra, I think... J.
I cant wait to own a Ric. I have 2 potential purchases on just now. However I am scared of rickenfakers. Can anyone with a bit of knowhow PM please. Cheers Steven
PM'd. Fakers are pretty easy to recognise, real Ricks have lots of details never accurately copied. Jon.

Very interested to see some pics of this. Is it definitely an Eko? There was an early Japanese EB copy which had a very similar scalloped body edge. Jon.
What's the big fuss over Maple? Surely they'll just be the same but a different colour!
Well, yes. But it's a better colour. I have to say if there had been a natural/maple one I probably would've had to buy it. Jon.

I remember seeing Marillion at the (then) Hammy Odeon in the mid 80s - Pete Trewavas was playing an Aria RSB Deluxe II - same bass as I had. For a moment, I felt somehow validated! Jon.
