  1. [quote name='dougie' post='1167980' date='Mar 19 2011, 09:34 AM']Esp since its hardcased, the deal i done with my T-40 here worked out well in excess of £280....[/quote] In all fairness Dougie, your T was in a bit of a state when we did the deal for the Ibanez SR800. Selector switch was snapped off, the bridge pickup wasn't working, tuners were bent, it needed fret-dressing & a setup - as well as a bloody good clean! If you paid a tech to do the work you wouldn't get change out of £100. Worth mentioning that I sold my other SR800 (fretless) here a few years ago for £250 - so I felt the deal we did was more than reasonable. Really hope you don't feel ripped-off, mate. If I moved my T-40 on (which I'm considering, because it's spine-crushingly heavy & I can't gig it) the price would be around £280 - which definitely makes this much more unusual example a bargain in my view - if I hadn't got Dougie's old one I'd be very interested. Jon.
  2. [quote name='el borracho' post='1167493' date='Mar 18 2011, 06:40 PM']The only id on the bass is the logo on the neck plate which is the same as the VP logo inside the soundhole of this [url="http://www.guitarandampshop.co.uk/acatalog/V_P_Challenge_CH-WCE11-SB_Electro_Acoustic_Guitar_Sunburst.html"]VP acoustic[/url] Maybe the plate is the only bit from a VP but it's all there is to go on in the pictures. Got to admit it does look rather nice though.[/quote] You're right - same logo. Case closed! Very tidy for a modern cheapy. J.
  3. [quote name='el borracho' post='1167196' date='Mar 18 2011, 02:29 PM']Doubt it's Japanese - VP are sub £100 far east copies. Can't see a jazz but here's a 6 string on amazon:- [url="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Challenge-Standard-Electric-Guitar-Redburst/dp/B003VUVXRU"]vp guitar[/url][/quote] I saw this, wouldn't necessarily assume they're related. J.
  4. From the same origin as the Peavey Zephyr/Grind ranges I'd say - I have a Zephyr C5 & the body/neck shape & laminations are pretty much identical, really only the headstock's different. Here's one - see what you think: [url="http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=63842"]http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=63842[/url] Age-wise it'll be 90s/early 00s and probably Korean-made. Jon.
  5. [quote name='neepheid' post='1167131' date='Mar 18 2011, 01:58 PM']The neck. Everything else can be reasonably easily fixed. Any neck issues - walk away.[/quote] +1. Walk - no, run - away from a twisted neck or stuck/unadjustable/overtightened truss rod. Likewise fretboard splits or delaminating skunk stripes, unless the bass is dirt-cheap & you're up for a bit of DIY bodging/experimenting. A bit of fretwear's not a huge problem but badly-worn frets will mean expensive work, nuts are pretty easy/inexpensive to replace. Like Neepheid says, usually everything else is easy-to-fix/replace wood & wire. Jon.
  6. Very nice-looking Jazz, unfortunately the VP logo isn't ringing any bells for me. As a first impression I'd doubt it was MIJ, mostly because this is too recent to be a 70s-era copy, and because most Japanese brands (apart from a few exceptions like Fernandes & Tokai) moved away from making copies from around the end of the 70s. It's possible the hardware & electronics may offer some clues to its origin, but with any luck someone here will recognise the neckplate logo. Jon.
  7. Made in Japan - built by Fujigen Gakki. Crafted In Japan - built by Dyna Gakki or Tokai Gakki. I have read that basses from Tokai are domestic-market only but don't know if this is the case for certain. Either way, quality standards from Japanese factories are uniformly high so neither's "better" than the other. Jon.
  8. [quote name='karlfer' post='1165363' date='Mar 17 2011, 08:28 AM']Are you positive this bass is very old? The only reason I ask is that kind of bridge/bridge positioning has appeared on some of the recent/more modern 'Fakers. Some of the old ones (like mine) are pretty much accurate copies, some of the newer ones are more "variation on a theme". Karl.[/quote] I am. It's 70s, early 80s at the latest. Tomb - be patient, keep bumping the thread - stuff seldom sells overnight on here, particularly Fakers. And remember a lot of people are pretty skint at the moment! J.
  9. Not mine unfortunately - I think it's a custom job, I just did a Google image search for "hippie sandwich bass"! Have to say I've always loved this sort of plywood! J.
  10. [quote name='tauzero' post='1163857' date='Mar 15 2011, 11:05 PM']Surely one ply is good, it's when it's more than one ply that it's bad... [/quote] Does this constitute bad plywood? This might polarise opinion among non-fans of playable furniture... J.
  11. [quote name='The Burpster' post='1163612' date='Mar 15 2011, 08:16 PM']No choice, these are perfect for your needs..... She will love you forever...! [url="http://www.daisyrock.com/products/basses/?lefty"]http://www.daisyrock.com/products/basses/?lefty[/url][]=1[/quote] Never mind the stumpy ones for lil' gurls - I want this: [url="http://www.daisyrock.com/products/basses/rebel-rockit-bass/rebel-rockit-bass?sku=14733"]http://www.daisyrock.com/products/basses/r...-bass?sku=14733[/url] Jon.
  12. Elephant in a whale's vagina? Could happen - [i]Balaenoptera Musculus[/i] would certainly appear big enough. Jon.
  13. [quote name='uke' post='1162608' date='Mar 15 2011, 12:11 AM']See when you hit 40, get a bit bald, or grey and undoubtedly the bass man gut! how unfair is it that you can now afford all those toys you could only dream of when you were 21! you went off the radar a wee bit when the kids came along and now you find yourself playing "Free" songs with a few numpties a lot less talented than you! At least we can take solace in that we have the best gear available, and have like minded friends on here! Rant over It's good to talk [/quote] I hit 40 some time ago, and have been backing up & reversing over it ever since. Still got all my hideous ginger hair, no more of a fat bastard than I was when I was 30, had a kid once but that's pretty much a distant memory now, still play (mostly) cheap rubbish gear (although I can - and do - afford lots of it), still play in my own originals band playing my own songs with fine musicians, and would shoot myself in the face rather than resign myself to playing covers until arthritis sets in. One always has choices. Jon.
  14. If I was in the market I'd definitely be interested - it's still a pretty decent price for a very unusual Rickenfaker. Jon.
  15. Think there's already a thread about it - this is a Korean-made Jazz 24. No idea why the seller's saying it's MIM. Jon.
  16. [quote name='Annoying Twit' post='1160947' date='Mar 13 2011, 08:15 PM']Maya bass. Looks pretty nice, and with the original hard case might even be worth up to half, or at least a third of, what the seller is asking for it. [url="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/vintage-MAYA-electric-bass-guitar-top-quality-/130496758850?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item1e62368442"]http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/vintage-MAYA-electri...=item1e62368442[/url][/quote] Nice bass but the price is demented - 1/3 is probably about right. Ain't the original hard case either! Watching the 99p, no reserve Maya P with interest - not to buy but because I have a burst/rosewood Maya P (awaiting its pre-flogging scrub up) which is otherwise identical... J.
  17. [quote name='ras52' post='1160249' date='Mar 13 2011, 10:15 AM']Hm, are you hoping they'll mate?[/quote] Won't work. Dougie's blue SR800LE already lived for about 10 years with a gorgeous red SR800FL fretless - I had high hopes of an interesting hybrid, but nothing. Jon.
  18. Unlined neck. Don't have to buy it. Phew. Still a significant barg for £75 - these particular Hohners were very good. J.
  19. Wish I could afford this - this is probably the loveliest stock Faker I've seen, and a cosmetically very accurate copy of the checkerboard/full-width inlay 4001 from around '72/early '73. All it needs is a Toaster, some Wavy Grover tuners (or the superior copies), a perspex thumbrest & a notch cut in the middle of the mute cover! Btw GreenMan - quote tags are useful (and polite) if you're gonna quote. Jon.
  20. [quote name='waynepunkdude' post='1159271' date='Mar 12 2011, 01:43 PM']Why are there no truly cheap Rickenfakers? Every other type of bass has a copy for under £200 new except, Ricks Why[/quote] It's a reflection of the ludicrous price of real Rickenbackers, and the fact that every other type of popular bass has its own budget brand that copies have to compete with. Jon.
  21. A gentleman is a man who can play slap bass. And doesn't. Jon.
  22. Late to the party but all MIK, as BigAlonBass' link should prove. Always liked the Vester Argus - a BCer was selling one a few months ago, wish I'd gone for it now... Jon.
  23. [quote name='Ou7shined' post='1158474' date='Mar 11 2011, 07:12 PM']1981 Roadstar -> [url="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110658871805&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123"]linky[/url][/quote] That'll be an RS924 Roadster. And a complete wreck, by the looks. J.
  24. [quote name='LukeFRC' post='1157311' date='Mar 10 2011, 09:54 PM']is the body on your one ply?[/quote] Sadly yes it was! J.
  25. Good score Luke, that will scrub up nicely. It's identical to the one I had apart from the finish: [attachment=74442:fullF.jpg] [quote]Much as I liked the 1908 Cimars, they'd improved a lot by 1912. They could have been great if World War One hadn't started ...[/quote] Most people tend to assume that the years between the start of the Great War & the end of the Second World War actually brought about the demise of Cimar. The truth is that while they never regained the prestige of the pre-war era, the company continued - as a Workers' Co-operative, in the hands of a small but passionately dedicated team of craftsmen & militant Trotskyites. [url="http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/14/6.jpg"]It's widely accepted that they reached the peak of their output by the mid 1960s.[/url] J.
