Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Bassassin replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Here's a new game for this thread. You post an ebay listing, and other readers have to spot the wildly inaccurate "fact" mentioned in the listing. I'll start: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/bass-guitar-westone-...=item3a62ad3d64
Plenty of scope here - where do you want me to start? How about: there are at least two different basses in the photos. Hmm. J. -
That neck pocket to fit a standard 'Fender' heel?
Depends on your definition of "standard", Fender heels seem to be either 2 1/2" or 2 7/8". This is 63.5mm, which is 2 1/2". Not much of a shim though if it turns out to be the narrower width. J.
AND he used the same type of Steinberger bass as mine too!
That was a Hohner B2A, after he did his back in - I remember he later flogged it on Ebay! J.

Interesting bass! Never seen a Grant-branded one before but identical ones appear with the Columbus & Maya brands. Maya was a Japanese export brand (Columbus & Grant were UK importer names) used by Rokkomann, who allegedly had their own factory in Kobe. Do you know if the pups are proper 'buckers or single-coils in big cases? You can test this by seeing if a bit of metal will stick to the side without pole pieces. Trying hard not to be tempted by this. Jon.
Don't know why you are interested, Jon - these are lousy basses, impossible to play, no good live and you would not want one - so if you see another one, please let me know!! Cheers.
I've heard they're rubbish Eric, I only want one because the name sounds like a prog concept album... Of course, having two of the things cluttering the place up must be unbearable, I'd be doing my charitable duty by taking one off your hands! Anyway, I approve of the way this thread's heading, and it deserves an unidentified Kasuga through-neck, probably early 80s: And if anyone spots one of these, in the UK & at a sensible price... J.

Always liked them, bassist was a diehard vintage JapCrap player - Ibby Blazer & Roadster. Only ever saw them once, in a little tent at the first-ever T In The Park. Hopefully they'll see sense/get bored & get back together. Jon.

Bassassin replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I'd say this is worth about £350. I made an offer of considerably less, which was turned down within seconds. If anyone is thinking of buying it, hopefully my lowball offer may have prodded the seller a few millimetres towards reality. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=260727468767
Ross - spotted that last night and didn't bother PMing you because of his eye-watering price. However - did you see what he paid for it in December? No idea why I never spotted that first time around, though. J. -
A bit gutted to admit I'm never going to do this justice: As with other stuff I'm selling, part of a project dating back around 7 years - that apparently being how long it takes for me to accept I'm never going to do something! This was imported from Brazil - BCers with very long memories might recall these. I'm not 100% about the woods, tbh - it was a while ago - but as far as I remember it's a 3-piece mahogany back and a Brazilian cherry 2-part matched top. Routing is for standard-sized J pups, the neck pocket is 63.5mm wide & 15mm deep. Weight is 4.23 lbs/1.91 kg. There are two minor & easily-fixed flaws, both of which were present when I got it - a dent on the top of the upper horn, maybe 8mm long: And a very small flake missing from the upper side of the neck pocket: The lacquer on the body is a sealing coat & intended to be sanded off prior to finishing - but it gives an impression of quite how stunning the wood will look when properly lacquered or oiled. Looking for £60 for this, plus £7 for UK postage. This is a ballpark (it's gotta go!) so PM me with offers! Presently I'd prefer PayPal payment (as I need some money in the account!), and the only trade I'd consider at the moment would be for a good lined (preferably factory) fretless Jazz neck. Jon.

Plus a 'Tokai' and a scratchplate with an Ibanez style mudbucker hole in it.
Well spotted. That plate is off a neck-through Ibby. Wonder what happened to the rest odf it? J.

Just sold a BAII to Howard - and as always it's a pleasure to do business with him. A complete gentleman! Jon.
Mmm, bit of a tease!! Let's see the whole thing, then!!
Aha - might have guessed that would pique your curiosity, Mr Flat! Very regrettably - not mine, this one turned up on US Ebay a couple of years ago & is only the second example I've seen. In fact it might've been the same one twice. It's a Matsumoku, like the much more common Epi Scroll guitars. Here's the head - featuring the same MIJ Wavy Grover copies that Mat Rick copies have: Well - most of them. I have a late 70s Rosetti catalogue which features the Scroll guitars, but no bass - it's quite possible they were never imported here. Moving along, personally I'd say any thread called "Obscure Vintage Basses" would benefit from some Attila Balogh Odyssey action, know wot I mean, squire? J.

Maya Precision Bass, Mid '70's Jap' Beauty.**sold**
Bassassin replied to phsycoandy's topic in Basses For Sale
I beg to differ, this has Schaller stamped on the back and a sticker, and the original rout is original and untampered with as is the pick guard, perhaps this was a deluxe version!
Interesting - don't think I've seen a Schaller like that before. However - differ all you want - that pup wasn't originally installed on this bass! Having seen the route, which is plainly original, I'd say it would have had one like this: These are a lot better than the Tele-style ones & pretty common in the better-quality early Jap Ps & Js - obviously designed to be hidden under ashtrays, though! Here's a 70s P body fitted with one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=250759920082 I would imagine the scratchplate aperture on your bass has been been filed to accept the Schaller - you wouldn't necessarily be able to tell if the work's been done well enough. J. -
For a thread entitled "Obscure Vintage Basses" this is displaying a singular lack of obscure vintage bass content! I'll give you the Hag, sort of, but no Fender Precision, even one painted SnotBurst, in any sense qualifies as obscure! So, have an Epiphone Scroll to chew on: Now go post something interesting! Jon.

Maya Precision Bass, Mid '70's Jap' Beauty.**sold**
Bassassin replied to phsycoandy's topic in Basses For Sale
Very nice - I've got one of these - in very ruff condition, awaiting a tart-up. FYI that's not the original pickup but is an immense upgrade - mine has one of the little chrome single-coil jobs which look identical to the ones used in the neck position on a Telecaster! Yours looks a lot like a DiMarzio Model One to me. Jon. -
I imagine I'd be hung drawn and quartered by certain BC members for what I did to my 1970s P - Di Marzio pickup, homebuilt active preamp (with attendant routing under scratchplate) and modified scratchplate with a brass control plate section equivalent to the chrome section of a Jazz.
Not me. Back in the 70s & 80s, Fenders of this era were largely regarded as guff and were fair game - back then if it wasn't "pre-CBS" it wasn't worth a damn. Got any pics of your masterpiece? J.

More parts from a project-that-never-was, according to Schaller, these are the world's lightest tuners: Got these a long time ago for a project I never got around to (body & electronics will be listed next) so they haven't even been fitted to a neck. Manufacturer's spec here, these require 17mm headstock holes, as they are based on the Schaller M4S design. A set of these from AllPrats is currently exactly £100 so at £65 posted, I'm robbing myself, ain't I? Consider this a ballpark figure - these have got to go so make me an offer! Presently I'd prefer PayPal payment (as I need some money in the account!), and the only trade I'd consider at the moment would be for a good lined (preferably factory) fretless Jazz neck. Now SOLD pending payment. Jon.

No hands-on personally, but a few BCers have had them and feedback's generally good. I don't think any of the modern copies are actually bad (although I did play an Indie a few years ago & it felt cheap & shoddy, for the £500 asking price) but none of them are as accurate as the better MIJ examples - pups/hardware are wrong. neck proportions are out - and the Anniversary has too many frets! J.
I feel they were trying to evade copyright and as such these should possibly not be Fakers but a very good bass in their own right,I liked the MB it was a lot more transparent than the similar looking Gibson product....I am actually regretting selling mine in favour of keeping my Maya Telecaster bass......so much so that Im on the hunt for another Ibby, but good unabused examples are thin on the ground of late.... T
You're never bloody happy are you! Took you ages to sell that (would've had it myself if I'd had the money - or you'd let me have it cheap!) and now you want another one... Fact is with these, they were - as far as I can make out - the first JapCrap Fakers on the market - probably around 1971 - which is why they had the full-width inlays & checked binding, both pre '72 Rickenbacker features. The mudbucker lookalikes (actually single-coils in big cases) were probably just what the factory had available when they tooled up the first production run. Fujigen (who made Ibanez) used Maxon pups in most things and at that point there wouldn't have been any proper Rick copy electronics available - or other hardware, for that matter, in fact the very early Fujigen 4001 copies had massive solid-cast tailpieces, more like the very early Rick ones than the subsequent hollow ones. Anyway, they continued building them like this for about 5 years, but revised the design around 1976 to have "correct" 4001-type pups & small inlays. They still kept the checker binding, though. Ones like this are less common because Ibanez withdrew from selling copies around 1978 so the accurate Ibby Fakers were only around for a year or two. Anyway, you do realise if one of these comes up cheap, you'll have a scrap on your hands! J.
