1.
Either way I would like to know what Tokai Japans take on things is.
As far as the Rockinbetters are concerned in real terms it wouldn't make any difference because there's no Tokai 4001/4003 copy (and there never has been) for Rockinbetters to compete with. J.
 2.
Edit: Futurama versus Sue Ryder P bass. Let the battle commence.
Auntie Sue FTW. She'll sell you six basses for the price of one Futurama. Speaking of which, the neck wood's lovely but the rest of it's 'orrible: nasty, tacky-looking hardware, very ugly and suspicious (well-hidden edges) sunburst, all for the price of a used MIJ Fender! You'd have to be a mental to chuck money at that. J.
 3. It's just a Precision copy with a brand name some people have heard of before. Nothing any more special than that. Nothing to do with Tokai, but I suppose it's possibly from the same Chinese factory that makes low-end, licensed brand cheapo Tokais. But like Rockinbetters, that doesn't make it a Tokai. Jon.
 4.
Rickenfaker Sorry if it's been discussed but out of interest what is this one?
It's about the prettiest one I've ever seen, and one of the most accurate. I have no idea who made it - or even if it's MIJ, but it's a stunner. J.
 5.
J J Brunel? First post! I had to register and wait overnight to make that joke!
Best first post ever! Welcome! Jon.
 6. The body made me think of a modified Washburn B20 Stage: In fact I'd bet that's what the design's based on - which is why the identical lower half works, and the top looks like a chopped up mistake. The headstock, on the other hand, is just a complete mess. The seller talks about this as though it's some kind of sought-after rarity (OK, I know it's Ebay!) but is/was O'Hagen a "proper" builder? This just looks like a typical knocked-up-in-a-shed lumpy piece of junk, like all these efforts by people with zero woodworking ability & even less aesthetic sense. Jon.
 7. Joey's Bass Notes is a great site for anything Rick-related, not just Faker recognition. A review of the Kimbara-branded Faker (made by Matsumoku) from the 70s claimed construction & finish was superior to the original. A lot of the high-end Jap Fakers were built to a very high standard, & many surviving ones seem to have withstood the ravages of time & abuse better than contemporary originals. If you know your Ricks, Fakers are dead easy to spot - none of them were built to be counterfeits so they never tried to imitate every detail. J.
 8. There's this bloke called Squire who sometimes plays some old bit of 70s JapCrap - an Electra, I think... J.
 9. If you don't mind me saying Karl, the fact you're asking £70 more than you paid, and aren't willing to post to BCers isn't doing you any favours. It's a nice bass but the through-neck copies tend to be more popular. Jon.
 10.
I cant wait to own a Ric. I have 2 potential purchases on just now. However I am scared of rickenfakers. Can anyone with a bit of knowhow PM please. Cheers Steven
PM'd. Fakers are pretty easy to recognise, real Ricks have lots of details never accurately copied. Jon.
 11. Very interested to see some pics of this. Is it definitely an Eko? There was an early Japanese EB copy which had a very similar scalloped body edge. Jon.
 12.
What's the big fuss over Maple? Surely they'll just be the same but a different colour!
Well, yes. But it's a better colour. I have to say if there had been a natural/maple one I probably would've had to buy it. Jon.
 13. I remember seeing Marillion at the (then) Hammy Odeon in the mid 80s - Pete Trewavas was playing an Aria RSB Deluxe II - same bass as I had. For a moment, I felt somehow validated! Jon.
 14.
Doesn't anyone want the hard cases?
Nah - they're all yours mate! J.
 15.
Didnt XTC use a rick copy?
Joy Division certainly did - Hooky used a plywood Korean-made Hondo on early stuff, also an unidentified JapCrap EB-0 copy. Jon.
 16.
Anyone fancy some sort of consortium bid? We'll all put in say £50 each and then squabble over who gets what? Truckstop
Too late - it's gorn! J.
 17.
There was a Gibson SG amongst it wasn't there? Could have been worth the BIN on it''s own.
Not a Gibson - random JapCrap with a sticker. Probably £150's worth, all the same. Also 3 decent MIJ LP copies, the Jedson (early Matsumoku build) and Columbus LP Standard are very nice & probably around the £200 mark with a good sales pitch. Looking at the whole lot - that's easily £1500 worth of firewood there, and that's a very, very conservative estimate. Jon.
 18.
Looking through the Ebay shop I happened up this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Project-Fretless-Ele...5#ht_500wt_1156 It reveals something about the quality.... Phil
But you can buy a natural finish one which plainly ain't ply: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fretless-electric-ba...emZ130480437779 And only £3 dearer. Really don't like the look of those big, painted-on looking fret lines, though. Just wish there was a Sue Ryder lined fretless. Preferably a Jazz... Jon.
 19.
Includes two basses if you don't mind buying twenty six strings at the same time. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/22-Old-electric-guit...=item41567ee0e5 It does take all types to make up ebay's sellers community, doesn't it. Edit: Words fail me ....
Bloody hell - that's some collection of Car Boot Classics! Wonder how much he'll get for them, flogging them like that? Admittedly, as firewood goes, there are a few very sellable JapCraps in there that would do nicely if sold separately. Sad reality is, these, and the cases, will almost certainly go to an Ebay dealer. J.
 20.
Jon. You are getting sleepy, very sleepy, you will forget that you have a BB400 until the end of March. When I click my fingers you will be awake and remember nothing.
By March it's just about possible I might have given it the decent clean it's needed since I got it!
Fairly sure is crap, dunno about jap. Looks cool, but Italian popped into my mind, has one been up before?
I've seen these before - It's a Kay. More likely Taiwan than Japan, this was pretty much top of the range, if Kay could be said to have a range for it to be top of. J.
I was reading a page the other day explaining why some instruments have both on, but I can't find it.
If it was necks & bodies with different decals it would be explicable - in the 70s it was fairly commonplace for necks & bodies to be sourced from different factories, so no real reason why it wouldn't still be. Strange they're both on the neck. J.
