1.
A '79 Sabre... lefty -> linky I hope the cold snow isn't upsetting the neck. I had to say it.
Might inspire a new range of deep-frozen necks... Jon.
2. Didn't notice that before, dunno how - that's a massive twist! J.
3. Another Bullsh!tbacker, this time apparently a "Rickenbacker 4001 not sure how old at least early 70s possibly 60s". Quite. No idea what it really is (if you're quick enough to see the pics before it's pulled, you'll understand why!) but it looks like a Fireglo 4001S copy with a changed bridge. Would likely fetch a few bob, but not quite the £1200 BIN that Chummy wants. J.
4.
Friday – The Box, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow – 7.30pm to midnight – 4 bands – The Black Cherry Group, Simon McBride, Attica rage and ng26 this is about all the info i can find on it - ruddy promoters!! as long as travel and hotel is paid for itll be a nice trip! lol
That sounds more like it. Of those bands the only one I know of is Attica Rage - fine Glasgow metal band, been knocking around the scene for yonks. So who's paying your travel/accomodation for a little Glasgow club gig, then? J.
5. I thought I saw Stanley Clarke on Tuesday night. It was dark & I couldn't quite be sure, but when I yelled "OI - CLARKE, STAY OUT OF MY BINS!", he scuttled away, making an odd high-pitched squeaking sound - so I'm pretty sure it was him. Jon.
6.
£66.66. Very close to being the starting price of the beast. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SHORT-SCALE-JAPANESE...=item3cb1d0c1b5
Is spraying undiluted stream-of-consciousness bullsh!t a Satanic trait, do you think? This is extraordinary, particularly considering the brand name is "Impact":
This is an unusual bass guitar made by Jedson, which I believe was a sub-division of Teisco with a limited run of Japanese made guitars for the English market in the 60s.
Do schools these days teach the idea that if you don't know about something, just fabricate something random, because it'll make you look/feel clever & who gives a sh!t about facts, anyway? I suppose at least he doesn't say "I have read..." or "I was reliably informed...". Anyway these basses (and the ubiquitous guitar versions) were made by Guyatone in the early 70s, nothing to do with Teisco. Or Jedson, which was a brand owned by J. E.Dallas & Sons, prior to the formation of Dallas-Arbiter, who subsequently used the Arbter brand name. As any fule kno. J.
7.
And a lovely description stating that it was a Ricky, all original except for the treble pickup which he had removed. I didn't spot the bolt-neck, I must admit.
Skunk-stripe on the headstock but not on the body, plus binding all the way around the body. An elementary deduction, my dear Wotname. J.
8. Big fan here - I've had 2 early 90s SR800s (fretted & fretless) and am considering another SR because I miss 'em! I currently have an EDA900 Ergodyne, a pre '75 2366B Precision copy and a 1982 RS924 Roadster. I've also had an '81 MC150 Musician guitar and a '78 2601 Artist acoustic guitar. I've also got a pair of early 80s Blazer basses in bits in the lab, waiting for me to get around to sorting 'em out. All of mine have been exemplary quality instruments, as is typical of the brand. It's worth mentioning that Ibanez isn't a manufacturer as such - it's a brand name owned by Hoshino Gakki, who contract various factories to build instruments according to price range. Apart from my EDA (which was made by Cort in Korea) all of mine have been quite old, and were all made in Japan by Fujigen Gakki. Fujigen is probably best-known for building MIJ Fenders - and apparently originally got that contract based on the quality of the Fender copies they manufactured in the 70s, many of which were sold as Ibanez. Jon.
9. For them what missed it - it was a bolt-neck Faker in Fireglo, with a Rick TRC. Only one not-very-good pic but I'd say it was a Hondo with swapped tuners & no bridge pickup. J.
10. "Rickenbacker Bass made in the 90s" Rrrrrrright. J.
11. The Box? Played there a few years ago. It is small, don't know if the layout's changed but the stage was right up at the window so passers-by could see the drummer's arse as they strolled by. But yeah - cosy is a good description. I guess Gun don't attract the punters these days... Jon.
12. A bit of rather uncommon KoreaDiarrhoea for a change, at a completely daft-cheap £60 BIN: Vester Jazz copy Serious bargain, I'd be inclined to think - never played one myself but these are meant to be good, and have a bit of Fender-baiting history - a "proper" lawsuit, where the brand was shut down due to its apparent phonetic similarity to the "F" word. They probably weren't too keen on knockoffs this similar to the real thing either. J.
13. Not £500 any more - someone's been doing some research. That's me out, then... J.
14. I'm presently using the single-channel version of this head, and trying to talk myself into "upgrading". But there's no point - they're great: bullet-proof, stupidly loud and surprisingly versatile. Great bargain rig, this. Jon.
15. Pics, spec and most importantly - where you live. Unless of course you'll post to any UK address for a tenner. Jon.
16.
According to the man himself a broken guitar amp was responsible for the 'unique' sound. The Green Fender P he used is in bits now apparently and although he comes close with effects etc the Green P had a sound all of its own.
This is what I read too - apparently a Marshall 4x12 guitar cab with blown speakers was the culprit, certainly on Rattus & Heroes, which were recorded within a couple of months of each other. Jon.
17. "Bass Guitar" The single oddest thing about this is that the listing doesn't say "Fender". Anywhere. Anyway, I am no Fender expert, but I know my copies, & would like to think I could spot a shonky fake-up. However, this looks kosher to me - are my eyes playing tricks? Jon.
18. Epic - also available in blue & red, I'm quite tempted by red for my see-through backbreaker/wallhanger! Jon.
19. I'm seeing 8, but I'm tired & seeing cross-eyed. I'll tell you in the morning! J.
20.
Yeah my tuners are the smaller ones like on Eds. In fact the more I look at Ed's before he changed the neck and everything the more I think they are really, really similar, possibly the same year? Sure Jon could help there.
Yours & Ed's (and my old one) are the same - rosewood board, little tuners, chrome truss cover & Gibson-type nut. The maple neck's more accurate which probably made it a slightly more expensive model, although everything else looks the same. J.
21. This ain't the For Sale section, and that ain't a 60s neck. Jon.
22.
Ibanez Rickenfaker - Quite nice dunno if this has been posted already
It certainly has. One day, Tino, one day... J.
23.
Ebay listing claims that this is a "Cimar branded Ibanez Blazer". Not sure if that's true, but the headstock seems to check out. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ibanez-Roadstar-Bass...=item1c1663a78c
Nah, it's not. It is of the "Cimar By Ibanez" era so Cimar was a Hoshino brand at this point - according to various bits & pieces on the ICW forum, it definitely wasn't when they were making full-on copies. Blazer/Roadster shape headstocks appear on all of the Fender-derived Cimars of the post-copy era, and these do appear to be Fujigens, unlike the older copies. However there are a lot of detail differences between this bass & a Blazer - body shape, scratchplate, tuners, bridge etc. Interestingly though, the Cimar Stinger is exactly the same as the early Ibby Blazer. J.
24. I think I kind of am in my perfect 'riginals band - although things would be improved massively by a drummer who would play what the songs need, add their own touches of flamboyance & brilliance - and actually be available to play a bloody gig or two! But you can't have everything... Jon.
25.
Which would you find more frustrating - playing in a covers band, or playing in an originals band that played original music written by another member of the band but not original music (of at least as high a standard) written by you?
It's a very subjective question and I can really only speculate - I haven't been in an originals band where I wasn't involved in composition since I was 19! Anyway it would depend on the songs. I can think of one band that I know which I'd happily play with - the 2 co-writers have a unique style which I absolutely love, & I feel my own writing would be incompatible and would compromise what they do, so I doubt I'd want to contribute. I'm sure there are others too, but on the other hand there are plenty of bands whose material doesn't inspire me, & that would bore me rigid. Obviously I'm only talking about originals bands on a similar level to mine, where money doesn't enter into it & the music is its own reward - realistically I'd have to love the music or I might as well play covers & be paid. A paying gig with an originals band would probably be another matter altogether. I've never been in that position so I can't say whether I'd feel any additional personal kudos or sense of self-worth/importance, or if I'd find particular value in the idea that the audience had made the effort to be there specifically to see "my" band, irrespective of whether I'd participated in the creation of the music. But I somehow doubt it. J.
