There's no great technical virtuosity to what Hooky does, but stylistically he's an innovator. I think that makes him good. Jon.

Nice, that. I was watching that one - just curious, no intention of pulling the trigger. Anyway K77 prefix on the serial makes it November 1977 - these were from Fujigen, identical to the equivalent Ibanez/Greco etc models. Antorias have the same model numbers as Ibanez too, I think they're originally factory designations, and this will be a 2367B. It would once have had a nice tort plate - and no J pup! Speaking of which, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that turned out to be a DiMarzio. Jon.

I play drums a little - enough to know whether a part is physically playable - and am completely happy for a proper drummer to embellish, refine or even change a part completely, as long as it remains consistent with the feel I was aiming to achieve. The same goes for guitar parts. However the place for this is the practice room, not in front of an audience. Speaking of the practice room, plenty of improvisation happens there - we often play unstructured jams for (what seems like) hours - it can be inspirational, hilarious, brilliant, chaotic, disastrous - but to an audience I think it would be crushingly, painfully dull! J.

I play in an originals band, on stage I don't improvise. The notes I play are chosen specifically because they work, they are appropriate for the song and the musical context of the part of the song that they are a component of. They are the [i]right[/i] notes. I write my band's music - when I compose a bass part, I know exactly what I'm doing, what I'm aiming to create and why. To spontaneously change basslines live would be pointless and would likely clash with what the other musicians are doing. Obviously compositions can evolve through rehearsal & performance, & if for example it occurs to me that playing something differently might enhance a song, I'll develop the idea on my own & then try it at practice to see if it actually works in context. As a composer I feel it's faintly insulting to suggest that performing a song as it was written is somehow musically stunted and illiterate. Jon.

Get down your local car boot, you will probably find an Encore Strat for £20 that you can pull apart & rebuild. Once you know what you're doing (and there really isn't much to learn - electric guitars & basses are fundamentally very simple) you can pick & choose your own parts to build a bass or guitar, rather than just having whatever comes in a kit. Definitely a strong stylistic influence going on there - I do like the red quilty one. There's a Schecter as well with a similar close-but-legal look, can't remember what it's called though. J.

Still quite nice though, mine's presently in bits awaiting having the back/neck refinished - I played one gig with it & half the thin black paint on the back just rubbed off! J.

Surprised Geddy Lee hasn't been mentioned yet - Rush have used keyboards since 1977 and necessarily he'll default to synth bass parts, either with his left hand or using bass pedals/sequencers. Rush's keyboard-heavy 80s era produced several songs with no bass guitar part. Jon.
