1. I would request a refund from the guy & once he agrees, return the bass - if he values his Ebay account & reputation at all he's being a complete moron attempting to sell an item that's not exactly as described. If he's arsey about it, don't worry; Ebay/Paypal will give you a refund - sellers have zero rights & zero protection these days and you can get your money back with no problem - Paypal can just remove it from his account without his agreement. If you are entirely amoral you can get to keep the bass, too, because there's sod all he can do to make you return it. Jon.
2. This thing of beauty & blueness is now on ThiefBay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=120498497609 Still available to youse lot here, of course - I'm more than happy to cancel the listing if anyone's interested. J.
3. You know I would've had it if I could at the time, Jack. It's looking less & less likely I'll be getting the Yamaha I mentioned, so now I'm violently kicking myself for missing this. Arse. J.
4.
How about this electri base guiter? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/electri-base-guiter_...=item3a54c7f30c
He's gonna make you an offer you can't understand. J.
5. "Reason for sale - all these eye-wateringly expensive and exclusive basses didn't actually make me play any better". Jon.
6.
Until you posted that, Jon, I'd have sworn it was you who told me it was a '72!
Nah - it appears in a '72 catalogue and so far, that's the earliest sighting, with the incomplete reference materials available to tragic anoraks such as myself! So it could be anywhere between 72 & mid-75 (when serials started) but could - theoretically - be earlier. Hope whoever picked this up gets bored with it soon & sells it to me! :brow: J.
7. Gah! Bad timing from hell! This is a bit out of my budget but if I hadn't just done a deal for an 80s Yammy lined fretless I would've been all over this. Hope it stays in BC and I get a shot at it at some point. [pedant]BTW - it's "1975 or earlier", not 1972. There is absolutely no way of dating pre-serial Ibanez & don't let anyone tell you otherwise.[/pedant] Jon.
8.
coffee hits screen!!! Superb! .....it's you who will wake, alone & sweating in the dark, dead hours before dawn, cries of remorse dying on your lips; you, who will face your own haggard reflection each morning Jon - I think you must be psychic mate - thats a normal part of my daily routine! I can get Ian Hancock to lop the horns off and keep the offcuts just in case I change me mind...just superglue 'em back on eh? Seriously, I'm picking the bass up from Stansted later today as you read this! How's about a simple refinish in white...?
To be honest aesthetically it ain't a thing of beauty to start with, but I don't think re-shaping the horns improves it at all visually - probably just makes it more neck-heavy. Up to you what you do with it, but it looks like it's been used for banging in fenceposts if the existing finish is anything to go on, so a white refin wouldn't really hurt. And neither would replacing the old birdsh!t-welded tuners with a set of Schaller M4S's, like Uncle Chris. Not sure what bridge he's got on his but this needs a Hipshot Rick replacement imo. Pics when it's finished, Nick. Some old catalogue stuff for geeks: http://www.rivercityamps.com/electrapage/i.../1977page_4.jpg http://www.rivercityamps.com/electrapage/i.../1977page_5.jpg http://www.rivercityamps.com/electrapage/i.../1977page_6.jpg http://www.rivercityamps.com/electrapage/i.../1977page_7.jpg There were masses of MPC effects modules available for these - 12 different ones, as far as I can find out. There's a scan of the MPC effects user manual here: http://www.rivercityamps.com/electrapage/i...ry080215-043528 J.
9.
Nah - that one's a fake ... it's got Seymour Duncans and those aren't the original knobs.
Well they do say (they definitely do on the Ibanez Collectors forum) that if it don't say Ibanez, then it ain't one. So this one ain't one. Although it probably used to be. Only one Seamy Dunk, so it's only half-fake. J.
10. Bumping this - I'm sorted for a fretless now, so it's offers around £175 or intertesting Jap / weird stuff! Anyway I think this is the lineage of the guitar in pictures: Hamer Sunburst: Washburn 3-a-side headstock: And that Cort truss rod cover: Ain't exactly rocket science! I think these were put together on the sly & sold as no-branders, using designs that were set up & ready to go. And what's in a name? Probably about a hundred quid, as far as this guitar's concerned... J.
11.
Bzzzzzzzzz, bzzzzzzzz, bzzzzzz - mind those fingers! (sound of the jigsaw, cutting away excess hornage!!!) Now, I wonder who the new `daddy' might be....?! ATB! Nick
On you own head be it. You may feel it's the right thing to do now, but it's you who will wake, alone & sweating in the dark, dead hours before dawn, cries of remorse dying on your lips; you, who will face your own haggard reflection each morning, knowing what you did, and that you can never take it back, never put it right. Ever. As long as you're OK with that... J.
12. This may have been refinished in awsome matalic black, but regrettably the chip is missing from the bulkhead. What can you do? Jon.
13. Tell you what - the recession's done some weird stuff for JapCrap. I think people have downsized their GAS ambitions and focussed their attention on lower-end collectable stuff like this, hence some silly price increases. I just sold a Hondo Tele copy for £147 - which is easily £70 more than I expected, or would have got 18 months ago. Anyway - I nearly pulled the trigger on this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Aria-Pro-II-bass-gui...emZ220514933626 Aria Pro II PB1500 - these are outrageously rare & I've wanted one since 1985 when Russell Webb from The Armoury Show played one. Unfortunately I have neither £100 to drop on it, or the time to put it right. The dodgy-looking defret worries me a bit, too. Someone do the decent thing! J.
14. There were a couple of early 80s JapCrap examples from Fernandes & El Maya - the Fernandes was near-identical to the Satellite (possibly related) apart from colour, and the El Maya was very ornate - a proper Hippy Sandwich. Can't find any pics but I'll keep diggin'. Jon.
15. Pictures first: As you can see - set neck, twin 'buckers, mahogany neck/body with 2-piece flamed/curly maple top, gold hardware & outrageously lovely blueburst / transparent blue lacquer. This is a really nicely-made guitar with good-quality unbranded hardware & pickups, 3-piece mahog body, long-tenon set neck. But what the hell is it? I've scoured the Interwebs & various guitar catalogues and I've not found it anywhere - at least, not all in the one place... It's a no-namer, but it has design features which appear to be "borrowed" from other brands: the body shape & hardware/control layout appears to be identical to the Hamer Sunburst range, while the headstock design is the same as that on most 3-a-side Washburns. Headstock designs are usually copyright so it's possible it's some sort of design prototype. It's Korean made - the truss rod cover is the same shape as those used by Cort on many of their own designs, and Washburn & Hamer have both been built by Cort. Doesn't give it a name, though. I bought this off a gutarist I know and he had no idea what it was either. It's in excellent condition - there's barely a mark on it - but it's far from new, I'd say it's around 10 - 15 years old. It was pretty filthy when I got it, and fairly well-played too, judging from the fret wear. I've given it a full clean-up, dressed the frets & set it up, & it plays as good as it looks. The finish is excellent - apart from two tiny dents on the front & a small rounded indentation on the back, it's near-perfect. A few of the screws are a bit tarnished-looking, the gold hardware is starting to silver up a bit, and the lacquer's yellowed a little, giving the finish a faint greenish tint. It sounds pretty damn good to these ears - classic full, humbuckery, Gibsony noises from both pickups. These measure 8k a piece & are heavily wax-potted, they overdrive nicely & don't squeal when cranked. Controls are basic, just V, T & 3-way switch, I was going to put a pair of stack pots in it and wire it LP-style. It has quite a wide, flat fretboard - very comfortable & easy to play for a hamfisted gonk such as myself. The nut has possibly been replaced - it's slightly narrower than the board, but if so it's a very good job & the string spacing at the nut is fine. And now SOLD to a gentleman of impeccable taste. Jon.
16.
That's on old SB 1, which I don't think ever got reissued. Bit of an oddity there though. I don't think they ever did a two pickup version, and looking at the pickguard it seems to have been cut for a P type pickup (and he seems to have only one half of that, going by the pic). It seems someone has got further with that project than he's saying, as I'm guessing it's been routed and resprayed. Still, worth the money as it stands if you can be bothered to do the work and drop a bit of cash on it. And you don't plan on playing sitting down.
Agreed - it's an SB1C, originally like this: http://www.yamaha.co.jp/product/guitar/eg/...e/sb/sb-1c.html It's possible there might have been 2 pup versions, but it wouldn't have had a P type unit anyway. Looks like it might be a fun project if you weren't too bothered about restoring it to original. J.
17. Agree with Mr. Corpse. This bass is part of the Outlaw range - which is in fact named from the band The Outlaws, who endorsed Electra in the 70s. The built-in MPC effects (modular powered circuits) appeared in numerous Electra guitars from 1976 until the early 80s. SLM might possibly have had the bass modified to Squire's specs, but Electra were sourced from Fujigen, Matsumoku & Kasuga. I think the Outlaw range were made by Kasuga - there are design traits & specific components which appear on Kasuga's Scorpion series also. And whoever's bought this - please don't turn it into some sort of fanboy parody. J.
18.
Quite Gibsony. I could live with it but the cream pup covers would have to go.
Westbury Track 2s are great - here's mine: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=56477 Although £350 is a bit steep. I'd give him £15 for the case, though. The pickup's a DiMarzio, hence the cream cover, I like it, proper vintagey-looking. J.
19.
No one wantee?
No-one affordee. J.
20.
i f***ing love matalic black.
It's not worth it - the chip's missing from the bulkhead. Nightmare. J.
21. Bring on the g*it*r filth: For sale, too. Jon.
22. I do - in fact I was hoping the Matsumoku site might have a pic. No luck though - maybe they were early Korean basses. J.
