Fair play for askin' but I recommend your local car boot & a bit of patience. It'll probably cost you less than the postage on other peoples' throwaway junk. Jon.

I'd love to try a Lace Helix: Pretty sure they've never been imported to the UK. Jon.

He's Gustavo Dalfarra, a busker in Barcelona, I saw him a couple of years ago & watched for ages, wonderfully inventive, melodic, musical player - and that's coming from someone who's not a massive fan of solo bass! '59 P bass 'Vintage' (make) or 'vintage' (old)
Not good, black paintwork over the contours = plywood.
Not necessarily, just not solid timber. From what I can tell from the deliberately poor pics, I think this looks like OK quality 70s JapCrap, in which case the body will be solid mahogany with ash veneers. Obviously the oversprays serve the same purpose as on ply. The neckplate's clearly AWOL because a "Made In Japan" stamp wouldn't have gone well with the "Jan '59 American made" bull$hit. Dunno how I missed this when it was listed at £4000 - that's comedy genius! Jon. -
So you're selling a £500 pickguard
Bassassin replied to Happy Jack's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
To be fair "precison" could be a typo that he overlooked - but honestly some of the crimes against English you see on Ebay, makes you wonder how some people manage to get food in their mouths or remember to breathe. Jon. -
Ibanez RS924 - yours is the twin of mine & I don't think I'll be selling it! Price range is about right for one of these although some people are a tad more ambitious - and that one's an RS824 - passive electronics & veneered hardwood body, rather than solid ash & active pre. Jon.

You don't see many of them. Or Ebay dealers who can't spell "Ibanez"!! Way to get the hits! J.

**SOLD** Vintage 1978/9 Peavey Mark III Amp **SOLD**
Bassassin replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
I bought a single-channel MkIII head for £50, off a BCer a few months back, just as a stopgap. It's only meant to be 150 watts & I thought it would do for practice etc until I got something beefier. 3 months on and I'm not in any way motivated to "upgrade" - it's a loud (read really f*cking loud) robust, reliable little brute, and sounds the business through my old Peavey 1x15 Black Widow box - I honestly think they were separated at birth. These are, in their way, a bit like Westone basses, which are being discussed elsewhere - never flavour of the month but well-made, perform well, bomb-proof & last for ever. Look how many are still going strong, 30-odd years on. Jon. -

Westone bass guitars - what do people think of them?
Bassassin replied to CathalOC's topic in Bass Guitars
For the seriously Westone-curious there's an excellent & comprehensive website: http://www.westone.info/ It's a strange to think they didn't have a particularly great reputation back in the day - simply because they were cheap. I don't think anyone realised (I certainly didn't) that they were coming off the same production line as the Aria Pro SB series - which had plenty of professional endorsement & was priced accordingly. The fact that there are still so many of them around is testament to how solid & popular they were. J. -
Probably won't come as any great surprise when I say I've had one of these - quite nice it was too. Not Japanese - these are actually Korean, made by Cort around 1980, and about as good quality as comparable JapCrap. Probably the worst problem with mine was an unadjustably high action, down to the fretboard basically being so low it was impossible to lower the saddles far enough. Obviously the through neck means you can't shim it, so the only fix would have been to lower the whole bridge by routing underneath it. It did look & sound good, though, and I'd like to pick up another one day. Regrettably it won't be this one - an hour or two ago I impulsively pulled the trigger on a Westbury Track II project. Will I ever learn? Will I 'eck as like. Jon.

Westone bass guitars - what do people think of them?
Bassassin replied to CathalOC's topic in Bass Guitars
To echo everyone else, Westones are top-quality but mostly cheap & cheerful JapCrap, built by Matsumoku, which was rightly regarded as one of the best Japanese manufacturers in the 70s & 80s. 200 sovs is somewhat OTT for a Spectrum - they go for a lot less than that on Ebay, often under a ton. If you fancy a Westy, have a look at the basses for sale board here, there were a couple of Thunders up recently for very good money, don't know if they sold or not. Jon. -
Apparently it was to do with all the space travel and rockets that was going at the time. Gibson reasoned that they should make guitars in outlandish shapes to resemble rockets and stuff like that. There's also a reverse Flying V guitar... and a reverse Explorer...
And don't forget the Moderne: Designed in 1957, but never manufactured until 1982. Details like that didn't stop Ibanez/Antoria/Greco/whoever copying it in the early 70s: Note they didn't know what the headstock should look like! If it's a copy of a guitar that didn't exist, is it still a copy? And couldn't they have sued Gibson in 1982? J.
Sometimes you might still find those old value ceramic disc capacitors however the closest modern equivalents are 0.047uF and 0.033uF. The difference in values will have a minimal effect. You can get 0.047 and 0.033 Sprague Orange Drop caps from Watford Valves.
A bit cheaper at Axesrus: http://www.axesrus.com/axeElectronicsCaps.htm Watford Valves have a minimum parts order of £10 and minimum £4 postage, excluding VAT.
Amazed to discover the Flying V guitar was built as early 1956!!! Examples are contenders for the fabled $1,000,000 guitar title.
Same with the Explorer - strange to think that those iconic "metal" guitars date from the era of Chuck Berry & Elvis! J.
Got no brief to ride to the rescue of JapCrap under attack, but it ain't necessarily so that all Jedsons were rubbish. I had a 70's Jedson LP, a Black Beauty copy. Not being much of a guitarist I asked a couple of friends to try it for me and they both thought it was really rather good. On a whim, I took it into Vintage & Rare (Denmark Street) to A/B it with a genuine 1973 Gibson. I couldn't tell the difference, and the guys in the shop were struggling too. Not making that up. I'm sure there were loads of crap Jedsons, but some good ones made it through, too.
Later Jedsons were predominantly Matsumoku-made, & some of them are stunning - I keep seeing lovely natural LPs with bookmatched flamed tops selling for silly money on Fleabay. The acoustics are getting quite collectable and can sometimes sell for eye-watering amounts. If you're sad like me check out the Jedson fan/collectors' site: http://jedsonguitars.net/ Jedson was only around until the early 70s when J.E. Dallas & Sons merged with Arbiter to form the recently demised Dallas-Arbiter. And the subsequent JapCrap was branded Arbiter, still sourced from Uncle Mat. FWIW I was outbid on a rather pretty (and accurate) Jedson Strat copy on Sunday night. Had to go & play a gig so I got pipped at the last second. Bugger. J.
