Ah, so it's not yours then Jon. Does that mean it's ok to call open season on that wallpaper?
If that was my wallpaper I'd deserve everything I got... J.

    Prick

Just to clarify for the Hard Of Funny: P + Rick = Prick, a name, not a value judgement on either the instrument or its creator. I might build one so I can have a Prick of my own. And then stand it upright, like that one. J.
Works for me.... although I don't want to be quoted as liking your prick! Um, so to speak!?
Like it as much as you want - it's not my Prick! No idea what it is - it was causing furrowed brows over on (p)Rickresource & I thought it might provoke a guffaw or two over here. If it was mine, I'd let you all play (with) it, oh yes.... J.
  4.
any info on how these sound bassassasin? anyone got one? got any info/advice?
D'you mean the Ibby or your Hondo? The Ibby pups are interesting - they look like Gibson Mudbuckers (it's the same set as the EB-0 copy oif the same era) but in fact they're single coils. I can't speak for the big square neck 'un, but I've got the same sort as the bridge one fitted in my Frankenbugger Parts-Box Special: And it sounds great - I'd say a lot more like a real Rick pup than the "accurate" Hi-gain copy on my Kasuga. Admittedly the neck pup on the Frank is a real Rickenbacker Hi-gain, so that probably sweetens it a bit, but the chrome bridge pup is very bright, full & loud - it measures about 11k so like a lot of old MIJ units, it ain't subtle. Rick copies have been selling well lately - probably due to RIC's own price hikes, and £500 is pretty good for an Ibby - because of the brand name these are the most sought-after & collectable Rick copies. This one does have a neck/body split he's stopped mentioning in his ads, without seeing it, there's no real way of knowing if it's an issue or not - but this sort of thing can be a symptom of neck/body join warping, which can result in an unalterably high action. J.
  5.
~Im thinking of a trip to barcelona soon aswell. Which part was he in when you went? Would love to see him play
He was in the Barri Gotic district, in a small pedestrianised square. The same spot was used by various other buskers at other times so there's plainly a "circuit" they play. Saw a variety of different performers at Parc Guell & I would imagine he plays there too. If you look at the Youtube vids, he's all over the place! Highly recommend Barcelona, it's a fantastic city & I want to go back! J.

I think this is the fifth re-list, must be costing him a fortune in fees. All the time he's too lazy to post it & too greedy to start it low it probably won't sell. J.
  7.
Same with Geddy, he can slay many bassists with one finger.
He uses his index finger like a pick; up & down strokes. I read somewhere he has a mutant fingernail which allows him to do this comfortably. Wonder if he gets many know-all snotnoses telling him he's "playing wrong"? J.
  8. Saw him when I was in Barcelona a couple of years back - his hair's shorter but I think it's still the same bass! Very entertaining & dextrous playing. I even gave him money! Jon.
  9. I played pretty much exclusively with a pick for about 20 years - my fingerstyle was rudimentary at best & never got used live. I decided a few years ago to make an effort to develop good dexterity with my fingers, and have now got to the point where I don't touch the pick at home and when gigging it's about 80% fingers. At practice last week I got inexplicable right-hand pains & had to resort to the pick for a lot of songs I wouldn't normally, and on Friday we were playing a long set so I made the decision to play a 100% plectrum gig, for the first time in about 4 years. What I realised was that about half of my band's songs sound better with plectrum bass, and despite having developed a pretty solid fingerstyle, I still play more confidently & accurately with a pick. There were a few songs where my parts simply don't work with the pick but on the whole it was an eye-opening & somewhat liberating experience. I'm going to be reintroducing the pick for a lot of songs from now on - & I think this is a clear demonstration of the validity of all techniques. Learn 'em all. Jon.
  10.
I think the funny thing here is that someone once paid £120 for it
In the trade that's what they call "a pack of lies". I'd like a pink bass, but not that one... Jon.
  11.
Considering my point was to highlight the elitist attitude and dismissive responses made by certain members of the community that put off other members from posting. This was immediately followed by your "sneering" comment about the lack of posting i have done, figure it out for yourself.
Serious question - what elitist & dismissive responses were these? All the comments about the actual bass - and its asking price - seem quite reasonable & even supportive to me. J.
  12.
Well thats why it was communicated in a PM. Thats just common sense!
If you were selling something and had a firm idea of how much you wanted for it, why wouldn't you want your potential customers to know the price? J.
  13.
Ive just been reading through this thread and im embarrassed...This guy just may have started to get pissed off when someone blurted out what was suppose to be a private message about a the price of his bass
I'll reiterate - I suspect the poster in question didn't realise that Jazz73 was keeping the price secret from those he was trying to sell it to. I wouldn't have guessed that, either. J.
  14.
Im sorry for not being part of the clique, clearly the point and the irony is lost on you. So sad, so sad.
I've never been part of a clique before. How exciting! Maybe you should explain the point & irony a little more clearly for us cliquesters who were so wrapped up in trying to be reasonable & plain-spoken about an obvious misunderstanding, that we entirely failed to appreciate that we were actually being sneering, condescending and dismissive of somebody who simply didn't speak English as well as us. Or have I missed the point & irony again? J.
  15.
There are a lot of members that dont post that often. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm
Indeed there are. Some even fewer than 0.02 a day, I bet. J
  16. I don't think ridiculing the price is necessary, certainly nobody did here, the responses were all broadly constructive, but I don't see why discussing a price (you know - politely & rationally) is unacceptable. This is a perfect example of how a potential seller can have a huge misconception of the value of his instrument (based on fruitloop Ebay shops & economic climate) and how knowledgeable people here, most of whom realistically probably have little or no interest in buying the bass have attempted to clarify the situation. It's a shame his response was to be generally arrogant, dismissive & mock-aggrieved, and to send insulting PMs in unfamiliar languages. If he can sell it for the money he wants in the EU, then that's great & I wish him the best of luck doing so. J.
  17. Before you go, just take a second to use the search box at the top of the "For Sale" board, search for "JV" and you'll get an idea of the sort of prices they sell for on BC. And possibly why the price you were asking seemed a bit shocking to most people. It also probably wouldn't have occurred to Donhills that you wanted to keep the price of the bass a secret from the people you were presumably trying to sell it to. Did you specifically ask him not to mention it on the board? Re-reading the whole thread, the majority of the responses have been attempts to be informative & helpful about the price you're asking. I'm not entirely sure why you feel offended. J.
  18. First of all, it's a lovely bass, no question. Being realistic, on UK Ebay I would expect a later and more common JV Squier (with the large Squier logo, like this one) to sell for between £500 & £600, competitive Ebay madness might push it up to 7 but that would be quite unusual. Realistically it is the seller's prerogative to ask whatever he wishes so this is in no way a criticism, just an observation. I recently sold my SQ Precision to a German BC member, he was happy to pay my asking price because of the exchange rate favouring the Euro, to be honest I was expecting to have to sell it for somewhat less. I think 73Jazz needs to appreciate that this works both ways - and I strongly doubt that a UK buyer will be willing to pay £900 for his JV. Jon.
  19.
I love the description of "sound calibration holes".
That's what's been wrong with my basses for all these years - incorrectly calibrated sound, because I can't find the holes! I wonder what on earth they mean? Couldn't possibly be making stuff up just to sound clever, could they? I might message them and ask for more details about these "sound calibration holes", how they work, and if the bass is supplied with all the necessary tools & calibration charts to, er, calibrate it. J.
  20. I've been musing over the idea of a fretted/fretless double neck for a couple of years - I knocked up a rough idea of how such a beast might work: Theoretically it wouldn't be physically that much bigger than a conventional bass - my idea would be to make the body myself & everything else should be pretty easy to source. My band does have a song or two which would benefit from some slidiness - and the pose value is incalculable... Jon.
  21. Better off grabbing this Maya P neck & finding a body that hasn't been refinished with phlegm. Obviously a week for Mayas - just spotted this southpaw J ending in a few hours, currently at £122. Recession? J.
  22. Here's a couple of under-the-radar 70s copies which might be of interest: Hohner P copy - £75 BIN This is apparently MIJ which means it's a Moridaira, not top-drawer JapCrap but pretty damn good. Might be a ply body or maybe a top/back veneer on butcher block. Collection only. CMI Jazz copy - 3-day stealth listing Unsure of the maker here but CMI is quite collectable. Zero-feedback seller, collection only, 3-day list & invisible description means someone will get this for buttons. If I was near Milton Keynes it would be me. Jon.
  23.
That crack in the back of the Ibanez will be the neck slowly creeping forwards due to the pickup cavity being too close to the end of the fingerboard. As it creeps, the neck angle will be changing and the action getting higher and higher. It happened to one I used to own - there just isn't much gluing surface with that huge pickup rout there. And the pickup on mine was a skinny little single coil under the cover anyway - what were they thinking when they chose that pickup for this bass?
Real Ricks were prone to this - possibly why the pickup was moved on later ones - and my Matsumoku copy has flexed at this point (no cracks) & has a very high action. All just symptomatic of 35-odd years of string tension, and other than filing down saddles & sinking bridges into bodies, there's not a lot can be done about it. Ironically the bolt-neck Ibanez has a sensible-sized neck pup, the same as the bridge unit on this bass. ChrisAngryman - got any pics of your CMI? Jon.
  24.
'won' this Ibby Roadstar 11 today, - looking forward to collecting and checkin it out!! Very surprised it went as low as that. J.
