1.
Am i right in saying Ned Callan and Peter Cook were one and the same?
Yes - the history's a bit patchy, but Ned Callan was Cook's own line of quality, mass-produced UK-made instruments. I have no idea if "Ned" ever existed, but it seems that bodies & necks were made by Shergold to Cook's specs and the guitars presumably finished & assembled by Cook. These were sold under several different brands as well as Ned - mine's a CMI (Jim Marshall's Cleartone Musical Instruments) and there were also Shaftesbury (Rose-Morris' own brand) & Simms-Watts, who were distributors for the Callan brand too. There's some erroneous info on the Web suggesting that the brands other than Callan weren't built by Cook & were in fact JapCrap! Utter rot - they're all the same, and speaking personally, having owned & worked on literally hundreds of 70s Japanese guitars over the years, there isn't a single component on my CMI Ned which even remotely resembles anything Japanese. As far as this is concerned - the one on Ebay is the only one of these I've ever seen apart from mine & the one The Ox has in the ads. Also, Neepheid on here has an ongoing restoration project with a short-scale, set neck version of the same design. Ned Callans come up on Ebay from time to time, but these are usually the later Cody ("Knobbly Ned") or Hombre models, which seem a great deal more common. J.
2. Great to see that - not too many JBs around (despite the fact they still make 'em) and would love to add one to my hoard one of these days... Always wondered what all those knobs were for! J.
3. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=180343281052 Realistically just a candidate for the overpriced listings thread and massively unlikely to get any bids - but I can't help but be very curious to watch this auction cos, like, I've got one of these: And funnily enough was considering flogging it. Hmm. Jon.
4. I hate to admit it but I think that's pretty cool - looks well done too. Although:
...using original 1969 parts and equipment from an Aria Diamond P-Bass...
Sacrilege if it was true, fortunately it's another Ebay Pack Of Lies - there were no 1969 Aria Diamond P basses & those parts aren't from a Matsumoku, probably a late 70s/early 80s Hondo. So that's OK. Jon.
5. Sold to Paul (Ednaplate) pending release of funds. J.
6. A tiny little bump-ette, in the name of public awareness and, well, encouragement. J.
7. It's causing some consternation over at Rickresource, where absolutely no-one has a clue who Zender is:
Hmmm asking at least $6k for a bass worth maybe $3k on the strength of being who exactly?
J.
8.
PM sent
Replied! J.
9. It's a nice example of a transitional 4001 (chequer binding/Grovers/Toaster but small inlays) which does make it rare. However I entirely fail to understand why the fact it's been played/owned by someone whose name might have appeared on someone else's album credits makes it "special". Did he coat it in magic pixie dust which will rub off on the next [s]mug[/s] owner? Jon.
10.
PM sent.
And replied. Good opportunity for a timely bump... J.
11. This is the same as the "Anniversary" brand copies which came up a week or two ago. Looks better in the transparent finish, & it's interesting that it has 2 more frets than a real Rick! J.
12.
Funny looking Jap thing http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vintage-E-Bass-Gitar...1QQcmdZViewItem
Teisco NB-1. Single pup stripy version of the one on this page: http://www.mark-cole.co.uk/teisco/bass.htm J.
13. Sold to Arne in Flensburg. 'Wiedersehen! Anyway, made in Japan 83/84 at Fujigen, SQs followed immediately after the original JVs and while not specific vintage reissues (they seem to be broadly based on 70s Fenders) are similarly superb quality. This one's quite unique having a stunning near-bookmatched body - others I've seen have 3-piece bodies on unmatched 2-piece, the only other one like this I've seen is an example on the http://www.21frets.com site. And it's not as pretty! It's in very good but not pristine cosmetic condition, there are a few knocks & dents on the body and a couple of small (3 or 4mm) chips on the lower edges. The neck has some light "leant against the amp" marks and there's a small pre-smoking ban fag burn adjacent to the E tuner! Hardware's in excellent condition, no rust or corrosion, in fact it looks practically new, and the frets are unworn with only slight play marks, mostly down to me. The only non-original part's the scratchplate, the original w/b/w plate was broken when I got it so I replaced it with a 90s MIJ tort. This is a good fit & required no new screwholes, it's drilled for a pup cover & thumbrest, but the body itself isn't drilled. I did repair the original plate - superglue & stiff plastic card to reinforce it - and it looks OK & is robust enough to use: There's a generic 70s/80s JapCrap tolex hard case - I don't know if this is original to the bass, but it's the right era. It's tatty & the padding's had some dubious "repairs" but it's functional & better than a bin bag! I'd like to suggest £420 delivered for this thing of beauty, rarity, appreciating collectability and growly thumpiness. I'm not really looking for trades (unless you have a Gibson Victory you don't want) but my unquenchable GAS always leaves me open to suggestion... Jon.
14. Like any JapCrap these don't really have a specific value, although the brand makes it a bit collectable. I'd probably expect a nice example of an RS800 to go for up to £200 on Ebay, hard to say what this one might get without actually seeing it. Missing parts, tatty condition & potential playability problems (high action) might realistically knock it down to around the £100 - £120 mark. Do you think it needs pro attention to make it properly playable? Have you tried setting it up to see if the action can be lowered, are the frets in decent condition & does the truss rod work? If they really no longer need it they might not be bothered what they get for it - if your conscience can stand it, make a low offer & see! Do post some pics if you can, but there's not really an absolute answer to the value of these things. Jon.
15. +1 to AxesRUs, also Ebay store CH Guitars are worth a look - pretty well-priced & a good choice of bass bits. Jon.
16. Leave it - Squier IIs were late 80s Made In India instruments & were the same as the early Sunn Mustangs in the UK. You'll pick up a MiI Sunn P bass for 50 or 60 quid, while the Squier II badged ones can get quite silly money in the US. I had an Indian Sunn Mustang Strat, it was 'kin lovely & I wish I still had it. Jon.
17.
If I was planning on selling a bass for £1,500 you know that I'd make a bit more of an effort with the photographs. S.P.
True - but if I was selling an SB1000 I think I'd make an effort to get an idea what its market value was, rather than think of a number, double it & add a "0"! You could buy three of 'em for that! Jon.
18.
I owned this model before... also it was cool with its own charm, that's most certainly not true! Hate that the implication in the description is that the bass is a Steinberger. He walks a very fine between being ambigious and just plain deceptive. Pity someone's bound to fall for it and even if I do report it, using my past experiences with eBay, they'll do nothing much about it.
He won't sell it. There are always loads of these on Ebay at much more realistic (although still inflated IMO) prices. He won't get people searching for "Hohner" because he's too dim to spell it right, & no-one looking for a real Steiny would look twice - apart from to laugh or facepalm. Apart from some dubious hype there's nothing actually misleading about his blurb - these are licensed by Steinberger so it's no more deceptive than mentioning Fender when flogging a Squier. I think if anyone's dim enough to buy it then that's a salutary lesson. I don't think the stupid should be protected from their own stupidity. Jon.
19. Last 10 seconds for me, unless I'm either going to be out, or am not too bothered if I win the item. The psychology is to get the item as cheaply as possible, with the assumption that other bidders will have the same mindset & keep bidding small increments. I am a cheapskate pikey and most things I bid on - or intend to bid on - I do not win because I always set myself an absolute limit which I will not go above. If I bid up to this limit early, this will have a tendency to make other people revise their own top bids and increase the likelihood of being outbid. I don't mind losing an item at all - on Ebay another will always come along sooner or later. As a seller I have witnessed lots of last-moment Ebay Madness - and been on the receiving end of the vitriol & anger a victim of it experiences when the item they paid wildly over the odds for turns out to be a disappointment & not worth what they chose to pay. Jon.

Mandobird

That MandoBird's cool as - but is it me or does the "custom MandoBird single-coil pick-up" look exactly like half a standard Precision pup? Jon.
21. Hi Deaky - it might be an idea to modify the thread title to point out it's a double bass. To most people on here "Kay bass" will suggest those unplayable Taiwanese plywood Precision copies from the 1970s, or even worse... For those that know better there's a resource for vintage Kay uprights here - http://www.kaybass.com/ Jon.
22. Cheers Matt - didn't realise it was still at home in Prague! Unfortunately the €100 postage puts a slightly different complexion on it - although I could go & collect it for about the same! Damn fine idea actually - Prague's a fantastic place. J.

Very interested in this - the last one of these went for a song but I was absolutely brassic at the time. If it's decent, I'll be having a punt if it stays affordable. Just so's you know. J.
24.
but I love punching songs into drummers, its one of the best things about being in a band!
Trust me, after punching the same song into the same drummer for 8 years - and they still f*ck it up, it gets a bit old. J.
