I love the fact that your GAS preceded your ability to play. You'll fit in just fine here. 😂

At last a song post I can get on board with. Proper music! I haven't listened to nearly enough Faith No More. Something I really must rectify. They've been on my radar for years and I like what I've heard but never really actively followed them. Definitely on my to do list after that one. Thanks @bubinga5

Is this the weakest line up ever for Glastonbury?
Newfoundfreedom replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
There's not a single act on that lineup I'd pay to see. Several I've never heard of, and one in particular I'd rather remove my own ears than listen to (Gallagher). So it's a no from me. -

But that's exactly what they are doing. Trying to make the adds so intrusive and annoying that everyone will pay for YouTube premium. -

I tried add blocker a couple of years ago ( or something similar ) and I found it stopped a lot of the add based software from working. Maybe it's time to give it another try. -

I used to be an avid Facebooker, now I utterly loathe it. The thing that really annoys me is it's potentially such a great tool, especially for someone like me, living overseas, to keep in touch with family and friends. But there just came a turning point where the dross far outweighed the usefulness. YouTube is becoming the same, it's an absolutely fantastic tool for learning how to do pretty much anything, but the bedroom superstars get right on my tits. Luckily they're still pretty avoidable of you don't click on them. What I find even more annoying about YouTube now is the bloody adds that pop up right in the middle of whatever you're watching with no regard for timing. Don't get me wrong, I understand the need for these platforms to make money, but what was wrong with having an add at the beginning or the end of the content without shoehorning one right in the middle while you're watching a pretty important video on how to perform a sex change on a gender confused hamster. Poor old Gordon will never forgive me for that one. -
Does your bass shape your playing style?
Newfoundfreedom replied to josie's topic in General Discussion
I'm probably going to go against the grain here, but I choose my basses on two criteria. Firstly and foremost, what I can afford, which isn't a lot. Secondly aesthetics. This is purely a personal taste thing. The standard "Fender" shaped guitars bore the hell out of me. I'm not saying they don't sound good, but to me they're just a bit (actually a lot) bland. As for sound, I think people way overthink it. All basses sound like a bass. Certainly in the context of a weekend warrior pub covers band anyway. People spend thousands on this or that cab, amp, bass etc to create a certain "sound", but for the most part the only person that would notice is the player. When you're cranking out Summer of 69 (replace with covers band staple of your choice) to a room full of half whizzed pub goers, let's be honest. No one gives a flying fig about the bass players "tone". Although I'm happy to concede this is probably not the case with recording or originals bands trying to culture their own sound. To answer the original question, I would say definitely yes. If, like me you play what you can afford and make do, then you adjust your playing style to make it sound as good as possible (again whether anyone else actually cares is debatable) -

I discovered these by accident quite recently and it was a proper "What the actual f#@k" moment. First of all I honestly can't believe that anyone is so narcissistic that they film themselves listening to a song and think anyone gives a flying rats donkey what their (usually staged) reaction is. Secondly why would anyone on the planet actually be interesting in watching it. Well, other than me obviously, but that was just because I had to watch two or three just to get my head around what was (or rather wasn't) going on. I mean Jesus H Mary mother of Santa. Is that really what passes for entertainment these days? -
Anyone successfully jamming with mates over the internet?
Newfoundfreedom replied to BassYerbouti's topic in Recording
I can't even manage to hand a half decent coversion over Skype without it sounding like I'm taking to someone as far away as the moon. I've always found VoIP to be a bit crap regardless how good your internet speed is. It's frustrating just trying to hold a coversion let alone trying to play in time with someone. -

I absolutely love Leo Moracchioli. I've spent many an evening watching his covers back to back. I actually think he's an extremely talented and knowledgeable musician, to work out, play all the instruments, record, mix and film and edit a fresh cover video every week is pretty clever imo. He also manages not to take himself too seriously which makes him extremely likeable to me. Some of the stuff he does is superb. Although the one above is not a particularly good example. I have to say, although he seems well liked on here, Scott Devine's click bait YouTube content irritates the tits off me. Although I'm happy to accept one man's trash is another man's treasure, but I'd genuinely rather listen to the shark video above than his endless jazz waffling. Admittedly the guy in the original post is definitely top 3. If not number one. -
As long as you're finished before 11pm there's sod all anyone can do about it. Of course consideration is always a better course of action.

Yup. As far as I understand it you don't need any kind of licence. It's a private party, as long as no one is being relieved of any money in the form of ticketing (or to buy alcohol bit that's a separate issue) then there's no problem.

Here's a shot of me practicing, with unfeasibly short legs. I'm actually 6 feet tall but somehow look like Tattoo in this picture. 😂 -

Sensing a theme in the classifieds at the moment...
Newfoundfreedom replied to therealting's topic in Amps and Cabs
Oh dear. A few people seem to have lost their sense of humour in this thread. If my initial comment about Markbass ruffled any feathers, please realise, that as with most of my posts on here, it was meant in good humour and tongue firmly in cheek. People have different views, life's too short to argue about it. I thought bass players were supposed to be the laid back ones. Now kiss and make up before I have to call teacher. Just for the record, as I had a bit of fun at the expense of Markbass, I use probably the cheapest class D on the market, it's an absolute powerhouse, weighs nothing, looks and sounds absolutely superb, can be bought for pocket money, and I'm absolutely sure there will be other people that hate it. -

What famous musicians death most shocked you
Newfoundfreedom replied to dmccombe7's topic in General Discussion
I'm totally in agreement with this. I think life throws enough misery and loss at us all on a personal level without dipping into the trough of public grief. I'm not really emotionally effected at all by the loss of a public figure (musician or otherwise). Don't get me wrong. It's sad to lose such talented people, but more in a respectful acknowledgement of a passing talent kind of a way than any true emotion. Numerous thousands of people die every day, we can't grieve for them all, and I've always find it a little distasteful to value one life over another because they can play a guitar or kick a football or whatever. -

First Time Playing Live... What Have I done!!?
Newfoundfreedom replied to Ashweb's topic in General Discussion
I'm in a similar situation. Although with a rehearsing band. We've just arranged to play or first gig in about a months time in front of family and friends (about 40 people) I've only ever done one gig before about 30 years ago when I was 15. I stopped playing shortly after (not because of the gig lol) and only took up the bass again about 7 or 8 months ago, so I'm still very much an amateur. I remember being absolutely terrified at 15 going on, but half way through the first song I felt like a rock God! I'm hoping something similar will happen this time around. I'm already feeling nervous and it's a month away yet. The rest of the band are far more experienced, having gigged loads of times in previous bands in front of hundreds, and in some cases a couple of thousand people, so they can't wait to get out in public. I'm hoping I catch the same bug and the nerves go away. I suppose the first gig is always nerve racking no matter how practiced you are. -
Not that I've ever noticed. To be honest I think the build quality is absolutely superb overall, especially given the price.
-
I've got the Mossfet version and up to now it's been absolutely bullet proof and sounds amazing. It definitely sounds like you got a dodgy return as suggested above.

I've had one of these for about a year now. They're absolutely superb little basses.
