Cheers for the heads up. I've been after one of those for ages. Seems like a bargain at that price too.

Ooh just you wait for the daggers to come out now. How dare you have an actual opinion on a discussion based forum. Run for cover! Run I tell ya!

"Custom" bass - RRP £650
Newfoundfreedom replied to lemmywinks's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I'm distressed just looking at it. -
More self indulgent jazz noodling like most of Scott's content. No denying he's talented, but it does absolutely nothing for me.

Oh God, don't go there! That's another 40 page thread.

Playing covers - how accurate do you need to be?
Newfoundfreedom replied to Nicko's topic in General Discussion
This ^ Absolutely! -
Good call. Vintage are also ridiculously good for the money, and they can be picked up second hand for next to nothing.

"Better" is subjective. For me there's much more enjoyment in making a song your own than learning it verbatim. I know some people are the exact opposite. There's no right or wrong as far as I'm concerned. As long as it's enjoyable for the band and the audience then everyone's a winner either way. -

Fair play. Horses for courses really. I'm in a weekend band, we don't get paid, every gig we do is to raise money for charity, and I have an extremely full and busy life outside the band. I enjoy playing, but I have absolutely no interest in spending hours and hours repetitively playing the same part of a song over and over just to learn it note by note. I have no ambitions to be a professional musician and I'm actually quite content to be an average bass player. For me it's all about enjoying it otherwise it just becomes another chore. -

Better to play the wrong bass line right then play the right bass line wrong. This attitude that if you're not good enough to play the original note for note then you shouldn't be playing it is absolute b0ll0cks! Play something you can manage, that fits and sits well with the rest of the band and 99.9 percent of the audience wouldn't hear the difference. Play what you want. Enjoy playing it. If anyone tells you it's against the rules then tell them to go f@#* themselves! -
I've never actually owned one but I'd buy a Harley Benton in a heartbeat. In fact there's a couple I've actively had to restrain myself from buying because I just don't need another bass. To be honest I wouldn't hesitate to buy anything Thomann's own brand range. I've had lots of bits like power packs, leads, music stands etc. They're an absolutely superb company, great customer service and surprisingly good gear for the price.

Thanks. I'll have a look.

I totally agree with Stylon Pilson above. If it's an iconic, stand out riff, then you need to be as close as possible. Otherwise for me, learning a song note for note just sucks all the fun out of playing. I get the basics down then just wing it. -
Hello o wise and talented bass comity. I'm looking for a band app which will allow the members to synchronise their efforts. I've just tried one called Band Mule which is very close to everything we need but lacks live messenger notifications. Can anyone recommend a good app with the following features. Cross platform. Android, iPhone and browser. Group messenger feature with push notifications so everyone knows when they've got a message (not necessarily on the browser version) Gig diary Availability diary. Set list manager (basically somewhere to just make a note of the set list.) That's the bare bones of what I'm looking for. Any other features would be a bonus. Does such a beast exist? Thanks.

Best online Bass lessons - SBL, Talking Bass?
Newfoundfreedom replied to Chrisbassboy5's topic in General Discussion
I like Talking Bass. Purely because Mark is a straight, no bull, down to business teacher. I find Scott really grating. I don't deny he's probably a great teacher, but I can't stand all the fluff and filler. It's too much about him. I used to use Justinguitar when I was learning to play the octave higher thing with too many strings. He's a superb teacher and extremely likeable. It's a shame he doesn't cover bass. -

I think this was the same bass I was drooling over for weeks. (If not the same one then someone selling the same model) If it didn't have too many strings I would have snapped it up. -

Michael Jackson covers- Yes or No?
Newfoundfreedom replied to redbandit599's topic in General Discussion
It's an interesting question. It's going to be interesting to see how MJ's work holds up after this. Does good music excuse bad behaviour? Should the music and the musician be viewed as separate entities? I must admit to being sceptical in the past of the allegations made against him, but having seen the new documentary there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that he was guilty of, and got a with molesting children for decades. The most abhorrent crime I can imagine. Yet, I still like his music. It's going to be interesting to see where society lands on this one in the coming months. -

Deluxe 4 string - - chameleon wood !
Newfoundfreedom replied to edstraker123's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
They're Harley Bentons, Thomann own brand. Great basses for the money but this chancer is selling decoration only basses for almost the price of the new and under warranty versions direct from Thomann.
