  1. Great to see so many gigs happening at last. Keep up the good work chaps. 👌
  2. I've finally made it to level 14 and cemented my status as Grand Poobar. I'm only 47. I feel like I've peaked too young! It's all downhill from here.
  3. When I was a kid, I thought Mike Reid off the radio invented Fairly Liquid. I genuinely thought the song on the advert said "Hands that do dishes can feel soft as your face, with Mike Reid's Fairy Liquid".
  4. Precisely. It's the unpopular musical opinions thread, and that's one of mine. I don't expect anyone else to share it. Another one. Jim Steinmann was a genius!
  5. On the other side of the coin, I always assumed that I was singing Tubthumping by Chumbawumba wrong, because there's no way they'd play "P#ssing the night away" on the radio. Would they? 😳
  6. I can't concentrate when I hear jazz. It makes my brain itch. Can't stand it.
  7. It's not so much that I don't like instrumentals. It's just that for me, vocals, and especially lyrics are the most important part of a song. Without it there's just no focus. I could probably happily tap my feet to an instrumental, but I wouldn't play it more than once because it's meaningless. As for Vulfpeck. I'd rather listen to roadworks.
  8. The Cult's Edie (ciao baby) Before the advent of the internet and lyrics sites, I always used to think the lyrics were "A wh@re's darling queen Edie". Turns out it's actually "Worhol's darling queen Edie".
  9. Very well done. I've seen Maiden several times, and Steve Harris is probably the closest thing I have to a favourite bassist.
  10. Nope. Sorry. Bass solos do nothing for me whatsoever. Although I can totally see why some people would like it. For me the bass is just a part of a story, and the lead voice in any story is the vocal. Controversially (and probably the most unpopular opinion on here so far) I have very little interest in the bass guitar as an instrument, except in the overall context of a band. I don't listen to music for the bass, and very rarely pick bass lines out as a discerning factor. It's all about how the band works as a whole. I have absolutely no time for showboating bassists, no matter how talented. For me the bass is a supporting instrument. It's the backbone of the band. As soon as it starts to take a lead role I lose interest pretty quickly.
  11. Talented? Sure. Would I listen to it again? Absolutely not. No hook, no meaning, and absolutely nothing that resonates with me at all.
  12. I'd go with the exact opposite. Without lyrics and a good vocal, music is utterly meaningless.
  13. I could never figure out why Classic FM has a much stronger broadcast signal than anything else on the planet. You could get it in your car, in a cave underground, with the aerial snapped off. Yet Radio 1, which has 6 times as many listeners, you have to re-tune every three streets, and if you drive past a wasp you lose the signal.
  14. Thanks Dave. We're still pretty new on the scene and have only played about 4 gigs, but we seem to be going down quite well whenever we play. I've been surprised by the response to be honest as it's the first time I've been in an originals band, and it's a totally different ball game to doing covers that everyone knows. We've even been invited to play a large festival at the end of May, by the organiser who's been to a couple of our gigs. Sadly can't make it, but it's nice to be invited.
  15. Great gig last night, for a somewhat unexpected reason. We supported another all originals band at a local guesthouse. An extremely low key affair just for the fun of it. As anyone in an originals band knows, it's pretty difficult to get people to really listen to what you have to say. I've always been of the opinion that making people dance is easy, making people cry is another matter entirely, and means they're truly listening. Last night we had our first crier and it made my night. I should probably add, it was at the appropriate time after an extremely emotive song, and not just coz we were cr@p. 😂
  16. I can't even get my head around how someone breaks a bass string.
  17. No chance. I've never had a bass or amp fail. I exclusively play six string bass, of which I own only one, and I only own one amp. If amp fails I'll plug into the PA. If the bass fails (I don't know how it ever would) I'll go home. I flatly refused to buy, and lug a whole load of extra gear around just in case.
  18. That's a gateway drug in the same sense as taking crack for a mild headache. 😂
  19. I take an extra battery and an extra lead. That's it.
  20. I agree. Probably not something that would be at the top of my playlist on a daily basis. But exceptionally talented songwriters.
