I think she was just sitting on it. It sounds like someone's had a stroke on the karaoke.

Bootsy Collins on Jaco Pastorius
Newfoundfreedom replied to Bart Funk Bass's topic in General Discussion
I don't think it's mandatory. It was only a few months ago I had use Google to find out who he was, and only a couple of months before that I had to Google Jaco for the same reason. In the case of the latter I wish I hadn't bothered. -
Not sure if I can be bothered to go back to gigging
Newfoundfreedom replied to BobVbass's topic in General Discussion
I don't think it would bother me if I never played in public, went out in public, or even saw the public ever again. -
For how long have you been playing bass?
Newfoundfreedom replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Theory and Technique
I started my musical career playing the recorder at the age of six. By the time I'd nailed "Little Donkey" I knew I'd pretty much peaked and had to quit to give up and coming musicians a shot. It took me another 10 years to recover from the dizzying heights of recorder success before I picked up my fist bass. Purely because my mates were in a band and they didn't have a bass player, so I thought I'd give it a bash. That lasted maybe 12 months and one whole gig. I then once again took a hiatus from the showbiz lifestyle. I started playing again about a year ago. So all in all about thirty years, or two depending on how you count.- 14 replies

It's no worse than the original, the only saving grace then being Dave Grohl's drumming.

Hanging basses or on stands which is best?
Newfoundfreedom replied to thestick's topic in General Discussion
Really? It's a daily occurrence in my house. Incidentally I use both. I hang them when I'm not using them, and put the current one I'm using on a stand for easy access. I don't think it makes a jot of difference with regards to the condition of the bass. -
I think the best advice we can all take from this thread is, don't buy Fenders. No? I'll get my coat.

Be careful if they're paying you peanuts. The old folk have probably sucked the chocolate off them. -

I thought I had a nice barn to play in, but even I have barn envy at that. -

I'm kind of on the other side of this (nothing unusual there). But then the band thing is very much just a hobby for me. My heart really goes out to those of you who work in the music industry and rely on it for a living. It's extremely difficult and worrying times indeed. For my part, I'm loving working at a relaxed pace with my new band, which are actually selective former members of my old band, and having plenty of time to come up with new and original material without the added pressure to "get out there gigging". The other former members of my old band played their first gig last night. Rattling out the same covers we were doing a year ago, with a new bass player and drummer. Rather than being envious of them gigging, at 7pm last night when they would have been setting up and getting ready to go on, I was cringing at the thought and breathing a sigh of relief. Perfectly content with my feet up in front of the telly, after working on recording a new track in my home studio in the afternoon. Horses for courses really. But I'm far happier in the rehearsal room or studio than I ever was on stage. Whereas the other ex members priority was gigging as much as possible. So breaking up the old band actually turned out to be a win win for everyone involved. -
Bit of an update as I've now converted my home office into a bit of a recording studio to give me some inspiration in these lean live music times. It's not perfect, but it's perfectly adequate for what I need.

Two North Korean Ladies playing a bass duet
Newfoundfreedom replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
I don't understand the negativity. They're both better bass players than I am. Then again, Kim Jong himself is probably a better bass player than me. 😂 -
I don't even need to click the link. It had the words Jaco and fretless in the title. I'm out.

The bass playing was great. The melody track on the other hand..... Ouch!
