I think the bass girl from Fetchin' Bones was tasteful and also tastey looking on stage. Juliana Hatfield is a thoughtful bass player that deserves a good listen. The B-52s had a good girl bass player on "Deadbeats Club".

it takes a good roadie to remember how to hook it up . At least once John Entwistle came on stage to learn the treble amp was connected to the bass speaker and the bass amp connected to the treble speaker. I like two amps personally for the extra hi-fi sound . -my .02 cents

Graham, I am trying to get this computer to load my photos as I have switched from Bing to Google and it is causing me no end of grief ! If a Thunderbird (or Precision) weighs about 9 lbs. this Embassy weighs 8 lbs. That is my guess. My point really was the Epi Thunderbird has a better fret job, straighter neck, and has more quality than you would expect . This Embassy is what a teen might get for Christmas- not what a pro would use. Sorry, it's a cheapie. It sounds OK.

Outside, companies will switch back and forth , whether ply or MDF. Older Rootmasters were MDF and it is fine unless it is dropped out of a van or rained upon. It is usually heavier. The nicest KEF or Moniter Audio sterio speakers are MDF and covered with wood veneer. -But they don't get moved much ! I have some MDF Ampeg cabinets and now Ampeg uses wood ply. No one yet has said RM cabinets sound better than the beloved ABM models.

Cosmo , you are correct-but if you look up "Grenadillabama" there is one photo up there (on my 'puter at least). I am wanting to put something instead of a "G". That is getting old...

I have the ABM 410 also and have received compliments on it. They are birch ply, I believe. The RM cabinets are currently lighter poplar ply and they now have a 15/tweeter cabinet that I fancy . It is barely 19" square on the front and less than 14" deep ! At about 35 lbs. or less this is a cabinet that almost carries itself ! Does it sound good, using two cabinets ? Otherwise Ashdown make an ABM 210 I could dig. Those blue speakers look good to me.

I just got an Epi Embassy and it did not play well at first. It seemed to have a "backbow" in the neck. 2nd fret A string would not make a note ! I loosened the truss rod 2 full turns and now it will play. It is about 1 lb. less than a Thunderbird, a normal-length bass, with no neck dive. The fret ends will need some work too. I bought a cheapie and now I will make it all it can be. I will keep it. The picture is on my profile ; it sounds like a Thunderbird.

NBD - Epiphone Thunderbird Classic IV Pro
grenadillabama replied to DaytonaRik's topic in Bass Guitars
Is this Epi a current model ? From the front I thought it was the bolt-on neck version. I thought the neck-through models were either active, with 4 knobs or passive with nickel hardware . Both of your 'birds make a nice pair. -(I did not want this picture of my amps to be on everything -maybe I can fix it) -
Why does Ashdown MAG 300 combo sound so bloody good?
grenadillabama replied to Beedster's topic in Amps and Cabs
I wonder if those Toneman amps are exactly the same ? We can't buy those in the States. (I have a MAG300 and it is a trusty head ) -
Me neither ! I had a hard time kicking tobacco . They do sound good- like a Precision should !

Your thoughts re: Flats on a Jazz bass?
grenadillabama replied to Papabull's topic in General Discussion
I read a good article somewhere listing all the hits he did. Many were by a band that had a bass player. "Along Comes Mary"-The Association " and "Midnight Confessions" by The Grass Roots. He said he used a pick near the neck and had the bridge pickup turned down some. Check out "Whipping Post" the Allman Brothers Band. That was a Jazz with flatwounds and a pick. Rounds have a good 'twang' that you can make mellow if you like. -
maybe ...

Old School sounding amp to replace Walkabout

The 1B has a sweepable mid. The 1G has four bands of e.q. -
Old School sounding amp to replace Walkabout
grenadillabama replied to joescartwright's topic in Amps and Cabs
I like the Vox Stomplab 1B for a cheap pedal with e.q. It was less than $100 with a power supply. The chromatic tuner and gtr effects are a free extra ! -
New embassy (and also thunderbird) bass, Classic style!
grenadillabama replied to tommorichards's topic in Bass Guitars
I had a 1976 Gibson Thunderbird and sold it as the band did not like it. I wish now I had just quit the band. They were not worthy of my Thunderbird ! Now I have the active Epi and want a white Epi Classic because it has such a fierce midrange that seems to "spank" better than recent Gibsons. Or do I just imagine it ?? -the longer "point" on the Gibson does look better to me. -
I have an early HW1 and it sounds better than my glossy Precisions. It has a thin neck and threaded saddles. Probably not with graphite reinforcement rods in the neck. I also have a later Highway 1 and it has a slightly fatter neck (average) and Badass II bridge . It does not sound any better and just goes to show "heavy-duty" may not be better than "regular-duty".
-
I was going to add a regular aluminum color. either brushed or shiny. The black one on it now looks good for the white edges.
-
if it sounded very good I would probably keep it. Unless you feel the neck might shift later...

NBD: Classic Charvel Pointiness!!
grenadillabama replied to Old Horse Murphy's topic in Bass Guitars
I have a Jackson Kelley bass with a pointy head. It has a pointy Explorer-style body also. Your bass has a nice bright red color and maple board. I like it. -
the new Ray has 18volt preamp and stainless steel frets. It is bound to be different.

Stingray HH can't find an "universal" eq setting
grenadillabama replied to greyshark's topic in Bass Guitars
Maybe (to move only one knob) , adjust the eq for the bridge pickup alone - like a regular Stingray. This may not be possible exactly because the neck pickup will still be "pulling" on the strings a little bit. (magnet) Then, when you switch to both pickups just turn the bass eq knob down on your Stingray. I only have the one pickup version .
