Anyone know the benefits/differences between normal and cryogenic valves and also what difference would a higher gain harma valve give me, a slightly higher gain valve of the ECC83?

Fantastic, bought a 410he off Andy, immaculate condition, superb packaging and showed great patience while I sorted out a courier willing to deliver to me in the back of beyond

Tried a different pre going to the power amp today and it sounded a lot cleaner, could get higher levels overall without clipping the power amp. I'm thinking there is a problem with the valves. When I adjust the drive about 2 oclock it gives me disgusting distortion then smooths out the more I add?! Seems to be distorting at random times too. does this sound like dodgy valves to anyone? Thanks.
i used to have exactly the same set-up and i always ran the power amp in bridged mono mode, using unbalanced cables from the ampeg to the behringer. does the di produce any sound at all ? i just tried the DI out into my power amp and it was quiet, but there was a signal.
Just tried it again, sounds like the valves might have gone, it's very crackly making some bad distorted noises and the like. Do you remember what sort of settings you had at all? I had the master turned up full and adjusted the gain on the svp accordingly, kept the ep2500 on about half gain and it wasn't sounding good. When I added more bass on the svp EQ I can hear slight crackly distortion. I'm going to try and test it the cabinet to make sure that's fine from another pre and then take it from there. I have another power amp I can try too.
Hi Col I use to own an SVP Pro and I still own a SVT IIP. I run the SVP Pro like this, unbalanced out from the phono outs, into the left hand side of the power amp (bridged into 4 ohms), then out into a 4 ohm cab. Sounded great, what ohmage is your cab? You should be getting a signal by using the DI out, the switch next to it gives either eq or no eq. Here is a link to the manual. http://ampeg.com/pdf/SVP-PRO.pdf Get in touch if you need any more help. Steve.
Cheers Steve, it's 8ohms. I'm going to try running it unbalanced into the power amp bridged and see what happens. It was distorting before at low levels but I might have set the power amp wrong. Off down now to try it out. Do you set the master on the SVP to maximum and then adjust the gain accordingly?

Hi all, just looking for a bit of advice on my new set-up. I have an svp pro going to a behringer ep2500 power amp. This is feeding a 500w rms 1000w peak ampeg 410 he. I am looking to get the best possible sound from the rig at pretty high levels and the way I have tried so far is putting the power amp into bridged mono which gives me 1300watts at 8ohms going to the ampeg. I realise this is too much but I have never been putting the power amp gain past half way. This seems to give a fairly conservative overall volume though so does anyone think it would be better to just use one side of the power amp which would be 450w. Also I can't find out if the svp pro is unbalanced outputs? I know there is a DI out witha balanced xlr but this gives me no sound when I connect it to the power amp so I have just been connecting with an unbalanced cable from the preamp output to the power amp. Any help would be appreciated.

I have had this DM1100 delay unit for a while now, It's from the 80s and sounds really nice as it has the old chips made by Maxon inside it. I have been trying to figure out how to use the hold button on it as it can be used for loops, does anyone know how to work this? Any help would be much appreciated.

Advice on what cab to get for the sound I'm after
colinmk replied to colinmk's topic in Amps and Cabs
Yeah I've enquired about the NV610 but it would cost me £1100 which is too steep. Volume shouldn't be a massive problem as I will be playing places in the forseeable future that hold no more than 250 people. I can always split the signal to the PA too. £440 including delivery on thomann is a pretty good price too. -
Advice on what cab to get for the sound I'm after

I'm either going to buy the newer made 410HE with horn which is 500watts or I can get an older (1995) 410HE which is rated at 200watts on ebay. I'm driving it with an svp pro and a power amp that gives out 450 watts per side or 1300watts when bridged. Can anyone offer any advice as to which might be the better buy, is the old HE better built and would it be worth getting ahead of the higher rated new HE? Thanks. -
I've never been able to get a cut through sound with a semi-acoustic bass. they tend not to lend themselves to that kind of sound IMO. But if it is the bass you want to keep and you like it then something in the Schroeder 1212L style would help you no end as they tend to have more pronounced mids. Case in point is that i used to run a couple of Ashdown ABM115s and they gave me a very indistinct wooly sound that only creatures at the bottom of the sea could hear clearly. I replaced them with a single Schroeder 1212L and I'm as happy as Larry. Haven't even came close to the cab's or my GK 700RBII's limits and that is even when it is being used as my out front sound. Not as much bottom end as the Ashdowns but perhaps that's a good thing in that it eliminates the wool from my sound
Yeah that's maybe why I like the sound of ampegs so much. The 810 is the only cab I've heard my bass really shine through but it is just far too big to be conisdered. The schroeder sounds interesting but having tried ampeg I would ideally like to stick with them. I'm now thinking I will get the 410he, see what sort of level I can get from it and if it is not enough then decide what else to add to it. -
i had a svt 4x10he powered by a ashdown evo11 500w amp and thought it was quiet, this was confirmed when i got a abm 4x10 to go with the head.the abm was a lot louder but bearing in mind that cab was designed for that amp.anyway in my opinion the 4x10 he was a bit dissapointing on its own.if i had kept it i would have got the 2x10 to go with it as i dont think its a standalone cab.
Was that the old american made HE or one of the new ones do you know? -
OK mate. But you seem to be suffering a misconception about cabs. Two things affect the volume of a cab, the sensitivity (how many db with 1 watt at 1 metre) and how many watts that you are putting into the cab. The actual rating has no affect whatsoever.
Aye your right ferret, I was talking bollocks and have had a read about power, impedance etc. I'd certainly still like to hear about anyones experiences with these cabs though. -
And I said give mark a call. I paid a lot less than RRP for my gear. If you dont ask you dont get. Power handling makes no difference to a cabs volume.
Aye sorry Ferret, I will give him a call and see what he says. Volume perhaps not the correct word, but in my experience a 200watt speaker would not be enough to cut through at the level we play at. 500watt maybe though. -
Berg dealer in UK is BASSDIRECT.com.uk afaik Much easier to move than the SVT410HLF & AFAIK not more expensive either - well they aint here in AUS.
Well it says on their site £1100! Waaay to pricey for me. I am seeing an old SVT 410he on ebay. Can anyone clear this up, are they 200watts or 500watts the old ones? 200watts will be pretty quiet I am imagining? -
Cheers for the replys, Yeah from what I am hearing the hlf is a bit too low frequency orientated for me aswell as being a bit of a bitch to carry about. This berg cab sounds very appealing but aren't they american only? How much does it cost to get one of these to the UK, £1000+? I'm going to check out the Schroeder stuff too.
Well after looking at the UK price for an NV610 - £1100+!!!!! I can safely say I won't be getting one. I'm now thinking of getting an SVT 410he for the time being and saving my pennies for an orange 1x15 or SVT 1x15 to eventually pair with it. What do you guys reckon to them apples? -

Hi, I'm in the market for a new cabinet at the moment and I play an Epiphone Rivoli bass with a 60s gibson pickup put in it through an ampeg svp pro. The sound I like is one that really cuts through as I play quite a lot on the higher strings(sort of primal screamish/brmc sounding). I used to love the sound I got from the 8x10 ampeg cab I played through at our old practice rooms but theres no way I can get something that size. So...I've been looking at the ampeg 410he and 410 hlf. From what I can make out the 410he would be the sound I'm after but is not meant to be used by itself and lacks enough power to be used on it's own. The 410hlf seems to be more for people that play 5/6 strings and I'm not sure it will have that classic ampeg sound that I liked from the 810. Would it be worth my while waiting until an old style 410he is available? Does anyone have any experience with these or any other ideas? Cheers.
The 12Au7, IIRC isn't part of the drive circuit so probably wont 'add' any additional grit, but the characteristics of one 12au7 tonally may enhance the effect of the perceived grit over another type. I'd have to check the schematic to confirm where the valve sits in the signal chain. With ref to the blackface, I understand (as I owned one too) that due to their design *some* can suffer from noise getting in to the audio chain. (usually mains hum) - I, like many other found that upgrading to low noise preamp valves improved matters and was very noticeable. As an extra measure, I also bought some shielding cans and fitted and earthed those too. I think they made a bit of difference too.
I see, from looking at the watford website they say their are certain versions of the ECC83/12ax7's that are higher gain. Do you think these would be the choice for the kind of sound I'm looking for? Also am I correct in thinking that replacing valves is as easy as taking the old ones out and the new ones slot in to place? thanks again

Hi guys, I have (hopefully) just aquired an SVP-Pro blackface too. From what I'm hearing above it seems like a good idea to think about upgrading the valves. I will have a listen to it first when it arrives and if all seem fine then I may just stick with the stock but I'm always trying to find the best tone possible. Anyway if I do decide to upgrade then the above mentioned from Watford valves sounds good but I will be wanting a real driving gritty tone if possible from it when I need it. Will this be achievable with most 12au7s like the Phillips? Or should I look for something that has been known for this type of sound? Cheers.
