If your looking at spending £750 on a copy, I'd wait a few months, try and save an extra few hundred, and get the real thing....there really is nothing like a genuine Ric (no bias, I promise......) I sold a Fireglow 4003 last Summer for £1100. Prices are starting to level out a bit now (I bought a 2010 Mapleglow a while back for £1649). When the weather gets hotter, Ric prices seem to drop a bit, especially on e-bay......sounds strange, but I've really noticed this over the last couple of years. About 18 months back, I saw a mint 4001 Fireglow fail to reach a bid at £800. Keep watching, they do crop up. Please buy them, so it might stop me grabbing another I can't afford!

I'd save a few £££ and buy a 2nd hand real one. When it comes to a Ric, and re-sale value, it's your best bet. Believe me, when you've played a real one, anything else is just, I'm sorry, not worth bothering with.

Something for you Rickenbacker (and possibly Rickenfaker) players

I've always kept my pup guards on. I love the look, and TBH, I always feel awkward with other shapes because it's not there! -
Help me!!! Action adjustment advice
Oh ok, i got mine off here there wasn't an alan key provided.
I bought a key when I had mine (never got around to using it though!). The Ged doesn't come with one from Fender. It took quite a bit of finding, as it's quite an unusual size needed for the Badass. I think it was 0.5 or something? I may have even asked about the size needed in another section of BC at the time. -
Thanks to all for that. I gave Sims a call, and took a trip there with it this afternoon. Seem like a really nice, genuine bunch....and they do know their stuff!
Sims Custom Shop in Ashford are bonkers. Mani at Sound and image in Chatham is brilliant for set ups.
Actually, it was Sims I contacted first, as they are listed on the BC site. Sent a detailed e-mail, but never heard back....never a good sign - however, they are the closest, so I'd be interested if anyone has good reports from there. Their website seems to suggest that they mainly do the LED work, and doesn't mention set-ups. The bass is a 2009, and just needs some tweaking from someone who knows their Rics!
American Guitar Centre in Tonbridge?
Not sure about those guys. I had some dealings with them a while back - admittidly only over the phone - but they did seem a bit blunt, and a little full of themselves. May sound daft, but these things put you off, don't they?

I'm looking for a luthier in Kent. I contacted one listed through the BC section, but haven't heard back. Basically, I want a set-up on my Ric 4003. It's currently as it left the factory....good, but I've had better. This is why I thought I'd ask the experts here - as you know, a Ric with dual truss rods, and a nightmare bridge must be handled by someone who knows what they're doing! I'm in Tenterden, Kent. Love to hear any advice on this, and any success stories of who to trust, and where!

The one in the picture has been seriously modified. The pups don't look original, and these were never produced with a pickguard. They were introduced in the late 1980's as a 'budget' Ric....never sold in many quantaties, and are not very sought after today. One in super condition recently didn't shift on E-bay, priced at only £700. One that has been, dare I say it from the pictures, a little butchered, would obviously be worth far less. Hope this helps!
I'm not sure the analogy of a Gerbil (if you're comparing to a Rick) is right, but fair point. I am obviously after advice because I don't have enough knowledge myself.
Sorry Jonny, no offense meant, I was only joking. Just wanted to really say how different things are, and IMHO, it's really hard to compare stuff, as they all have good and bad points. I'm biased towards the Ric....but they are a very acquired taste, and are certainly not for everyone. As for the others....I'd try out everything, and the 'right' bass will make itself very obvious to you. Hope this helps!

I'm after a pet. Considering a gerbil, a python, or a crocodile. Any ideas?

I'm a pick player, and the trouble is, like so many, I suppose I'm a bit stuck in my ways! Whenever I play something else, I always think, 'it's just not a Ric'! Those basses are so individual, that once you get to grips with their issues and feel, other basses just feel wrong! I do like the jazz - and from what I have read, the new MIA are superb, and different again from my old Geddy. The Stingrays look good - and 2nd hand they are a fraction of a Ric (isn't everything...!), but I always worry that it might be the kind of bass where the novely might wear off.....sorry Stingray fans!! Funny thing is, nearly every Youtube clip of a Stingray has got somebody slapping and popping the wotsits out of it, the opposite of my own style.

For the first time, I've just got 1 bass, having sold everything else a while back. I'm on the lookout for something to go alongside my Ric 4003.... Have checked out a new MIA jazz (priced around £800). I had a Geddy, but couldn't go with the neck, so this might be a compromise? However, I've noticed a few used Stingrays on the 'bay, for between £7-800. Active isn't normally my thing, but when they retail over a grand, I'm starting to think I'm missing out! This is the trouble - go with what you kind of know, or do something different! I do love the jazz, but it is a little......obvious. The Stingray has always intrigued me, I had a passive copy some years back. Any pros/cons for either side?

I've sold Tom 3 basses now! 100% genuine, and a really nice guy as well. Deal with total confidence! Thanks Tom, enjoy.

I've decided to part company with my Geddy Lee Jazz bass. It's a great instrument, sounds and plays superb, but just not quite for me. The bass is only 6 months old, bought from the Bass Centre. Condition is immaculate - only thing I can mention is a mark on (kind of under) the lacquer. This was on it when I bought it, it's not from bang or anything like that. Probably a couple of surface scratches under the light from cleaning - I'm being really picky here, as there's nothing that will show in a picture. There are no dents, bangs, crashes, etc. I've pretty much used it for rehearsal and practice purposes. The sound is superb. The action is the lowest I've ever played - probably a bit much for me. I've never bothered to change it! Comes with an unused Fender padded gig bag that it came with. I only ever took it out in a hard case. Re-strung last week with D'addario nickels. I'm looking for around £520 - these are going for alomst £700 new, and E-bay has sold some bad examples for silly money. I'm located in Tenterden, Kent. Advertised as a buyer collect, given the gig bag, etc. Grab yourself a great Geddy at a bargain price!! Drop me a PM for phone number, or more details.

Just wondering if anyone is aware of any guitar shops doing New Year blow-outs or big sales? It's a tough time after all to sell, let alone in January! I'm not totally looking, but I'm always on the hunt for a bargain! Looked at some sites, but they seem to be just the same old same old. I am a little worried about the VAT increase as well....could hit the high-end stuff a bit?

I bought a lovely 2009 MIM P with maple fretboard. Wasn't for me - sold to Tom1946 on Basschat! Basically, I'm just not a P man. The 2009 MIM basses are the business - great feel, lovely action, for the money, I've never played a better bass.

Thanks to all the above who've helped me out on this. Sounds like an e-mail to OBBM is on the cards!

I've always used kind of a 'whatever' cable between my bass and amp, never really been too fussed what it is/was as long as it worked! However, I've recently been reading about the importance of a good cable, and how much it can affect the sound. I'm playing a Ric 4003 or a Geddy Jazz through a Markbass 121P with New York Cab. Basically, I'm looking to buy a quality cable. What kind of brands/types should I look at, and what kind of price am I facing?
