I have read with interest posts over the last few days about the Geddy J-bass. They seem to have quite a following! However, is there a big difference in tone between a standard Jazz to the Geddy one? I know some of the parts are different, but how much does the tone vary from a standard, similarly-priced Jazz? My experience of Fenders in very small, so forgive me when it comes to knowing where they are made, etc. The Geddy is Japanese?
-
Years ago, I had an old Squire Jazz, which sounded a bit thin, but pretty good. How does the Geddy Jazz compare to a more expensive, or standard version? Does it sound that different??
-
I think that the Geddy is actually closer to the heart rather than the bridge!

What's the best price (and place to buy) one of these in the UK?

I love them, and have played nothing else since I could (barely) afford my first. They are totally unique - and everyone above is right in that sense, in that they are certainly not for everybody. In fact, when it comes to comfort, if that's your main thing, they're probably not for you as they are not the easiest bass to play at all. I have and love both the 4003 and 4004, very different instruments, but both with the Ric eccentricities, They are, as we all know, very pricey - so make sure you really want one before you buy. As for borrowing one, with what they cost, you'd be lucky if anybody let you!! Nobody plays mine except me!!

All I'd say that anybody who plays bass is a bassist. I love my Rics, and I play with a pick. Unbelievably, a bassist told me last year that the Ric is not a real bass, because you have to play it with a pick. Wrong on both counts, and what an idiot. It just goes to highlight the snobbish attitude with the music world. I was a drummer before I was a bassist - am I not real either? We all play because we love it - finger style, plectrum, whatever. We're all as real as each other regardless of how you play, what you play, or how long you've been playing. Can't we all just be friends?????

After many years, I am giving up drumming to concentrate on bass. As a result, I am selling ALL of my gear. Much of this stuff was bought last year when I upgraded, but it has all just sat in the cases and not been gigged - hence it is all mint, barely used, but I've got to sadly let go. GRETSCH NEW CLASSIC MAPLE KIT (12/16/22) - Merot Sparkle - £750 (Due to distribution problems, high-end Gretsch are currently hard to even get in the UK. List price on these is £1400+) Comes with a full mint set of Mapex drum bags, tom legs and bracket. GRETSCH NEW CLASSIC MAPLE SNARE - (14") in Black Fade - £150 DREAM 'BLISS'CYMBALS - 14" Hats/17" Crash/22" Ride - Comes in Tribal Planet heavy-duty case. These cymbals are not yet widely known, but are hand-crafted in China, and sound like Zildjian Vintage K's. Hard to source, but amazing. £125 STANDS - GIBRALTAR 5600 SERIES - Hi-Hat/Snare/Cymbal/Boom - Complete with heavy duty hardware bag - £80 TAMA IRON COBRA - (Rolling Glide) Bass Pedal (Complete with hardcase and instructions) - £65 DRUM THRONE - MAPEX T755A - 'Motorbike' style - £45 For sale as listed - I selling the cymbals and stands as sets with cases. I am, sadly selling my Rickenbacker 4003. Bought brand new by me in 2003 (it was manufactured in that year), it has been kept in the hardcase since new, only being used for the occasional rehearsal. The colour is Fireglow, a beautiful sunburst effect. All Rickenbackers are handmade, and the craftmanship is unbelievable. The new price on these is now over the £2000 mark - and there is a two-year waiting list. As the factory is running behind, this is likely to increase, as is the price, with the fluctuations with the pound/dollar. The condition can only be described as mint - the pictures tell the story. There is no markings, rash, mods....everything is as the day it left the factory. The only minor thing to mention is a couple of half-millimetre tiny scratches on the front of the headstock, caused by re-stringing. These are very, very small, and you have to struggle to see them - but I want to be totally honest and genuine. You will not find another 4003 in this condition for this money. I am a total Ric-addict - the only reason that I am selling is that I can't justify keeping this one. I am taking delivery of another Ric - so this one has to go. Price is £1350. Comes with original, immaculate hardcase. Cash on collection only, located in Tenterden, Kent. Call me (Iain) on 0784 770 4422 if interested.

I've just managed to snare my dream bass on E-bay, from the USA. I've worked out the cost of purchase, shipping, etc, with the conversion before buying. However - when it comes to the customs charges and VAT - do I have to pay on a used instrument? I've already budgeted for a big lump on top! Are there any tips here? What can I get the seller to mark it as to help reduce the cost? Any ideas here welcome!
-
As it's your first post, maybe you could introduce yourself, who you are, etc, and provide a weblink or something? Might help anyone interested gauge more of an idea of what's on offer. Just a thought!

There's a really nice Trace 715 SMC 150 watt combo on e-bay right now with no reserve.
-
I am - and very happy I am too!! Come and check us out tomorrow night in Sheerness (shameless plug)!! That's the last time I do anybody else a favour!! BTW, do I know you Galilee? Have we met?

Sorry, I meant to say this was on behalf of someone else - he's now told me he's not looking as he's found something through another site.

My 150w Trace has a single speaker.....so I would assume output would be fairly similar to the Mini Mark?
-
Nice avatar Sk8! TBH, I've always found my Trace to have a fine amount of power for me. Other places where there's been a dediacated soundman, he's just line'd me out to the PA. I tend to use it in small clubs/pubs, and it's always had enough power to cut through. Then again, I'm a biased Ric player....and they sound great through anything! I've noticed a few Mark Bass players on here, so there's quite a following? I'm just looking for a way to plug 'n' go, whilst matching the quality and sound of my Trace.....
-
The place we've been using recently for practice has got an old Carlsbro combo. It has to be, the worst thing I've ever plugged into! TBH, it makes my Rickenbacker sound like a buzzing fly! Terrible!!

My current bass amp - a Trace Elliot 150w combo, serves me well with a teriffic sound, and output is more than good for me. However, at around 30k's or more, it weighs a ton (not literally, please forgive my calculations). Basically, I'm looking for an combo of 150w or similar that I can lift on my own, without risking a double hernia. I'd also like to be able to leave the gig without any help - I always find my amp is the last to get lifted out of venues whilst I'm helping the others! It would be nice to have amp in one hand, and bass in the other! I've seen the Markbass Mini Mark - seems to give out 150w, but they say it weighs under 10k! Has anybody got/tried one of these? How do they sound? I'm really interested to hear everybody's thoughts, as they seem quite expensive for a combo - just under £800. I was also searching the net for more pictures - I can only find the front, not the switches/inputs, etc. All help and suggestions please!!
-
Like most guitars, keeping the Ric original is the key. Any mod will affect the value for sure. With the early 70's 4001s especially - you want to do more research on the variants.....and maybe change the pup back as well!

"When I changed over to a Precision the drummer commented that it sounded like I had gone from a £9.99 Argos special to a real bass." ....and there's me normally arguing against the normal drummer jokes!
