Adding orchestras to classic recordings - Motown now!
spongebob replied to casapete's topic in General Discussion
I really can't stand this kind of carry on. Mind blowingly unnecessary. They all seem to follow a pattern - simply ruin a track with meaningless orchestral flourishes where they detect there should be an accent. Taking old rock and roll, it's doing to it exactly what rock and roll wasn't! To me, it's like taking the Mona Lisa and drawing a dirty great 'tache on it, or worse! 🧔- 33 replies

RIGHT ON LEATHER STRAP. Handcrafted in Spain, these are of the most amazing quality. Wide, padded, simply awesome. If you've not heard of this firm, check them out! This one is known as the Bassman Fakey - brown, slightly worn look. It's 8cm wide, 98-153cm long. They retail at £45+p&p (so £50). Here's the link to Bass Direct, where it was purchased from - http://bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Righton_straps.html Simple reason for selling - I've got super narrow shoulders, so need to buy a smaller variant. As such, this one is almost like new. I say almost, as it's had only a few hours play time on an instrument. Pictures testify to the condition. Only looking for £40, posted to your door (UK only please). £10 off for one the same as off the peg! Payment by PayPal 'gift' or bank transfer please. PM with any interest, and thanks for looking! SB 😀

Had a productive chat with an old bandmate this afternoon about originals. We're on a similar page, so got a bit of potential there..... Going to keep looking out for other opportunities as well, just in case. Not sure we have any originals circuit around here at all, probably further afield. There was one great place we used to play in a previous originals band, but it long gone now.

I think what did me was a couple of years back. Old bandmate got me a dep gig with his current band. Not my thing, I thought, ska covers, but we played to an enthusiastic 3-400 people. He approached me for a project earlier in the year, he dropped out....and it kind of left the, is this it? My last originals band was the best ever, save for the deranged BL which drove it apart. I had the most fun not gigging, but writing and recording. After all this, rock covers down the pub just doesn't hold any appeal whatsoever!

I always do it. Saves any awkward unplugging at an inopportune moment!

I left a covers band earlier in the year, but returned (against my better judgment) to fulfill the odd booking. In the meantime, I helped set up a semi acoustic trio, did a couple of gigs with them. However, it's all now come to an end. Just lack of interest, chemistry, and also my being jaded at the idea of another year doing that. It got me thinking.....what next? I've got no interest in pub covers. Stopped that a while back, got dragged back in, but its now never again. Rather not play at all than that. Previous originals bands I've loved, but lack of work folded those. What's everyone up to, that's not pub covers? Join My Band is, well, JMB....and our other decent local site closed years back. It's a tough time. Last time I was between bands, I'd joined up with another 3 by the following lunchtime....can't see that now!

Newly-discovered love of Trevor Bolder's playing
spongebob replied to bassbiscuits's topic in General Discussion
Forgot until I saw this, saw Uriah Heep in early 1991. Perhaps their era of their lowest ebb....they'd released an absolutely appalling record, 'Different World' recently. Remember it, as I had the misfortune to buy it ahead ahead of the gig! Either way, my friend and myself thoroughly enjoyed the show. It was loads of early 70s material, we were too young at the time, but loved that stuff on record. For a 'down' band, they played their bits off. TB great the whole time. Lesson learned. -
Does seem to be sticking at the mo. Guessing the incoming Festive season isn't helping, either?

Practicing without a drummer.....
spongebob replied to Newfoundfreedom's topic in General Discussion
My current doesn't have a drummer on purpose. We're electric bass, acoustic guitar, 2 vocalists. I put it together originally because I was fed up playing with poor drummers. I used to play myself, and whilst not being a big-head, could do better than most of our ex-sticksmen, even not having playing for about 25 years! The gigs have been good, and it gives me more of a percussive role as well as providing the low end. Obviously, it depends on the style of music you're playing...... -
Any news on TM? Last I read on TB he was suffering, health wise. Hope he's doing okay. Great player.

Do you think he'll be there for a change.....!😁

Flicked through the last two episodes of the series last night. Very disappointed. This series of 'Later' was really the weakest in years, and there's some stiff competition in there! It's really what's been posted before - that there seems to be a weekly 'formula' to the guests, and it's getting seriously dull. We need live music on TV, but this? I really think it's time to put JH and his show out to pasture, and start again. It's been running since 1992 - with so much having changed since then, is there a place for the programme? Soon be time for the Hootenanny - time again for Ruby Turner, Roland Rivron, etc, and the same approach as the last 24!

Graeme clearly has a great taste in music, proving it by purchasing the autobiography of one of the Grateful Dead's drummers from me! Great to deal with, big thumbs up from here! 😀
