Can't Fender US start making more inventive shades? That looks awesome!
I rather like these, work well on both Rick and Fender, not too taught, not too loose, well, for me anyway http://www.ebay.co.u...K%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Yes! Yes! Yes! Only flats I've ever bonded with. 9050L for me, super feel. So good, I've bought a set of 7250ML nickels for the Ricky - which I've the same flats on for a year. Have a change, may change back! If they sound great on an old 4001, I'm sure they'll be killer on a Flea.

Black PG ordered from Thomann. Guess I've always lusted after the B/M/B combo...the Jean Jacques Burnel thing. Thanks to Lozz for the Thomann tip and PG offer...nice one!
I agree that Jazz basses are more versatile, but (and this is a serious question) when do you actually get to use the sounds it is capable of? I've never played slap in my life (been playing over 40 years) and I can't imagine a situation in a gigging pub & club band where the rear pickup 'Jaco' sound would be of any use.
I enjoyed this point. I've had the same thing in the past - a bass that can do a lot, but only use a little. I kept dialling in P bass type-tone when I had a Jazz, or I had trouble cutting through a full band. Great for big bands with big rigs and racks of pre-amps. I play my Ricky with one tone in mind (not necessarily the one everyone thinks), I don't change it from song to song. Same with any bass - they may do a lot, but when I'm gigging, it's me playing, I'm not trying to re-create anything. I can't think of a reason to - most players I hear have their live tone, and don't adjust it song-to-song.

Oh, you tease! I can see the way this is going.......!
Fender flats are superb. I've got the 9050m on all my basses.
They are, Jim. Of all the strings I've tried, they are the best all rounders. I've got a set of Fender nickels in the drawer - never tried them as I'm scared to deviate from the flats! Had a set in the Ric for over a year, and they sound amazing...just seen to get better.
Cheers! April '75. I have no idea if that's the correct spacing though, the original (oversized?!) pickguard is long gone. Looking at the neck pickup cavity it could have originally been closer to the end of the fingerboard. The P is a '79 from Basschat, fantastic tone
It looks great either way! Like most things Ric, the change kind of filtered in over time. At least it gives you the option of both positions!
'75 4001 and a black guard P here - but on an Oly White
Nice pair! What month is the 4001? Notice it's sporting the 1-inch spaced neck pup - from memory, this occurred mid-75.
Yep - Black / Black / Maple!!!
This isn't helping!
-
Errrr....no!
-
Must add, that as I'm primarily a pick player, that doesn't seem to help matters either. I have an odd hand position that leaves 3 of my fingers sticking out when I play - they always seem to keep banging into the Jazz controls. In the words of John Wetton - 'too much knobs!'

I've owned a few, a regularly GAS for another.....then I often remember why I sold them in the first place! I love the sound of other people playing them - but when I've had them, I just can't get a good tone or cut through enough. The tone I want is never the tone I managed. I always ended up trying to make it sound like a P for more bottom and grunt. Which kind of did away with the point of owning it in the first place!

Thanks for the kind comments, chaps. Got some ideas for the PG as well now......!
Yes easy enough. Do your research get one with the right number of screw holes and the truss notch and your good to go
Great stuff. There's nothing electrical attached to the underside of the guard?
-
Looks great but would be better with a black guard, particularly with that nice maple board
That's what I was thinking. Is a MIA 'guard easy to change? I've looked online, as there's a million different versions!

I was on the hunt for a second, gigging bass. My main instrument ('74 4001) is my pride and joy, and YOB bass (only a month older than me!), and although I do gig it, I'm not keen on dragging it around certain places. More rarity, really - it's probably my only ever 'stayer' bass, as I had some super resto work on it as well. I did own another '74 4001, which I sold on a few months back, as it just wasn't in the same league (tone and playing-wise) as my Jetglo. Had a little experiment with an SG bass, but short-scale wasn't me. So the slot was open.....so it was back to the P. I had a white one which I sold last Summer, and have regretted it since. Saw the recent price drop....but then I found this one, even cheaper. Brand new ('15 serial number), must have been hanging in the shop as there's a little dust on the pickups! They were chucking it out on Ebay - I made a (cheeky) offer - and to my surprise, got it. I thought it would be a gamble given the price - but it was the real deal. Gigged it for the first time last night, and it was very good indeed. I hate to feel 'obvious', but there's good reason why these remain the bass of choice for so many. It plays so easily (strung with Fender 9050L flats, always use these), and filled the sound space with ease. EQ'ing was virtually done for me. Never had a black Fender Precision, so it's a change. It also matches my 4001. Que poorly taken photo of my pair - Only thing I keep coming back to is the pickguard. Leave as is, or change.....I keep thing about black, going all Jean-Jacques Burnel....?

Very nice. I've never played a T-bird, but they look effortlessly cool. Gibson must be made stopping these. It's like Hoover stopping Hoovers!

Cliff Richard new single Roll over Beethoven
spongebob replied to police squad's topic in General Discussion
"Carrie" is probably my favourite Cliff track. Perhaps it's because of where it's pitched that he has a bite in his voice that "Devil Woman" lacks.
Good shout. Never thought I'd be on BC discussing the merits of Cliff's classic 45's! -
Probably far more excited than I should be but....

Fender flats are my faves out of all the ones I've tried. 9050L - awesome! -
Cliff Richard new single Roll over Beethoven
spongebob replied to police squad's topic in General Discussion
I think it's just great he's still doing it, still being bothered to make music. Whilst it's far from my thing, it's also hard to take a dislike to. I think 'Devil Woman' and 'We Don't Talk Anymore' are also classic singles. ....and whist we're here.....look out, Cliff! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-LBI4wUA8k -
I'd go with 'Emotions' by Samantha Sang (amazing Bee Gee's tune and production) ....and, 'Pop Muzik' by M. Love it!

Bought my first Rumble combo from GAK. Came through, the front cover had obviously been removed and put back (badly), as well as a loud rattle from the unit. Spoke to them - it was the last one in stock - so they had it collected, and I bought elsewhere. The unit looked like it had been used - I guessed at the time it had been customer returned. Funny thing was, a tiny bit later another BC'er bought the same model from GAK, and guess what.....the exact same issues! So it was clearly taken back and sold again!

Sad loss. My mum was always a fan, and as kids, grew to know many of his big hits.

I attempted to read his book, 'Stone Alone' years ago. Bought it for about 25p in a charity shop. It was a book I had to put down very quickly indeed. He came across as a right old perv.....in the first couple of chapters! Worst thing, it wasn't an amusing thing - just very odd.

New cheap Marcus Miller endorsed range of basses - Sire
spongebob replied to Clarky's topic in Bass Guitars
Watched this last night - a +1 on the Sire thing. Funnily enough, first time in ages I could actually hear a bass on 'Later', and it's probably the cheapest one ever on there!
