1. 'Wish You Were Here (You Ought To Be Here)' by Isaac Hayes. A simply beautiful track from one of the best IMHO. Brings back so many thoughts of so many times.
2.
Would The Band Of Gypsies count as a reformed Jimi Hendrix Experience. If yes, they kicked ass. I attended the historical 1969 New Years Eve show at the Filmore East. Surreal is the only way to desrcibe being there. Blue
All I can say is WOW! That's what I call a gig to attend. I always wish the Jimi had continued with the B.O.G. - I've read so many book on the various reasons why he didn't - always a shame, as both the original album, and the double released a few years back are simply stunning.
3. Only one that I can think of is Dinosaur Jr. - 3 corkers since they got back together. I could probably add Sleater Kinney to the list.....but I'm ashamed to say I've not heard the new one yet (only been out a year!) but they were great on 'Later', and it got super reviews.
4.
The crucial 3 albums; Skylarking Apple Venus Nonsuch Followed by; Wasp Star English Settlement Oranges and Lemons Such a good group, I even have a soft spot for Mummer
I'm pretty much in reverse of that! I'd start with 'English Settlement', and work backwards to 'White Music'. All pretty essential in my book....I think they got better and better with each release. ....but I reckon 'Black Sea' would just clinch it....'Living Through Another Cuba' is just sooooo good.
5. I had no idea that CM ever played a Ric (Trevor in post #5) - would love to know when that was, and what for...I think he had a good tone for good while. My peak for them would be 'Black Sea'/'English Settlement'. Think they were unstoppable around that time. Losing Terry Chambers on drums definitely changed the band - whist not, for me, as interesting, but they followed a different and still creatively interesting path.....fairplay to them for that. Nothing worse than bands making the same records time and time again. I was directed on here to Andy Partidge's Twitter page - it's informative, and I've since had a couple of exchanges with him. Directed him towards Fender Flatwounds for his P-bass, which he said he'd check out!
6. Funny how some basses sound superb with one player, but just don't suit another.
7. I must add to my P-post. Although I have struggled to find one to bond with, I'll never learn my lesson....and I hope that one day, there will be a P that's right for me. So I'm in the not clicked, but not fully deterred camp. One listen to a piece of prime-JJ puts me in right back in the search......!
8. Sorry....but.... for me it's the good old Precision! I've bought and sold a few, and really tried to get on with them. Even recorded the band's last EP with one, as I always read that you can't beat the sound of a P in the studio. Thought I'd try being a 'normal' bassist for once. It did sound OK, but they just feel wrong to me - I find the body and neck way too awkward for my tastes. Bit like holding a large plank! The odd thing, I am at my most comfy on a Ricky...but I would opt for an older 4001 against a newer 4003 (although YMMV)....and I've tried a good few of those, too. Funny where we end up!
9. Bought some new cables from Dave - OBBM - one instrument, one speakon - http://bassic-bits.co.uk What can I add? Dave's products are superb - my (now) 'spare' leads are also from Dave, and they've never let me down....and believe me, they've been very well used! Time for some new cables - ordered on Wednesday evening, arrived Friday. I was also assisted on my choice, and it certainly helped being a Basschatter. Why on earth would you buy from anywhere else?
10. Love the 'Feat - I think there's something very special about the Lowell-era. I've heard a few of the later records, must admit they left me a little cold....I really should revisit them. Their last Lowell album, 'Down On The Farm' has always seemed a little overlooked to me....'Perfect Imperfection' and 'Be One Now' for example. ....and LG also produced 'Shakedown Street' by the Grateful Dead. Not their finest hour, but the expanded CD has LG playing 'Good Lovin'' with the Dead.
11. Both my basses have been re-fretted, one has had replacement pots and a little bit of paintwork resprayed. The other had a neck repair many years ago. They're both players, not museum pieces. The previous owner(s) have used, gigged, and done whatever with them. As such, certain parts have worn out, and have needed replacing to keep the instrument in working order. If I was buying another old bass, I'd always go for one that's been played over one that looks like it's been in a case for 40+ years. So long as the repairs have been done with care, that's fine by me. If not, basses aren't cars - most things can be sorted, and the cost isn't as bad as a vehicle resto!
12.
Arrrrrghhhhh!! OCD! OCD!! stacked cabinets of different sizes!! *Puff, pant* At least the logos match and are parallel. Phew! I can just imagine how that rig sounds with a Ric - lush, with a great big hefty twang.
Indeed it does! Bags of 70's trebly Ricky goodness....not like the modern ones (I'll quit before I start to rant.....!)
13. Don't know why it's come out sideways, but you get the idea of the stacked Rumbles.....!
14. Great choice, Mr. Discreet! I've had my 500 for a year now - at gigs I always take my 115 cab as well! I was a Markbass user for some years before switching to these, and I love them to bits. My tone was never to my liking - always a little 'sterile' with the MB gear. However, the Fender tone is just amazing - and I'm playing 1970's Ricky's into them. If you love the 500 tone, the 115 cab just gives it a little more of a rounded push. It's more to carry, but it looks great stacked up! I even bought the Rumble 40 as well, which I use for practice. It's got some push - went for over the 25 as it's a fair bit lighter, and the layout is the same as the 500, so I can achieve 'my' tone at all times. I know of another bassist locally who was taken with mine, and soon bought a 500 (plus a 112). They are indeed excellent products, and I can't say enough good things about them. .....and they look uber-cool!
15. For me, it is (or was) Motorhead. You pretty much know when you they put out a new record, what it was going to sound like....and they rarely disappointed.
16. RIP to an amazing visionary, singer, writer, and producer. As well as EWF, he also worked to massive success with a huge number of artists, and even played drums on one of my favourite albums, Minnie Ripperton's debut (Come To My Garden). EWF singles get lots of attention - justifiably so - but their albums are mostly brilliant as well, especially their original '71-'83 incarnation. Sad day.
17. Not a lot - I bought a small toolbag from Amazon a couple of years back, as beforehand, I just to stuff it all in my hardcase! Now I always take spare leads, picks, tuner, screwdriver set, earplugs, stand - all fits in the bag. Never carry spare strings, though.....banking on the fact that flats live forever.....!
18. Both my basses are 42 years old, and have been re-fretted, and have had other minor repairs along the way. Doesn't bother me at all, as they are both working and gigging instruments. Didn't buy them to leave them under the bed! One needed a bit of work to bring it back to full health as it had lay unused for quite some time - but was well played in it's lifetime. Personally - I can't speak for the older Fenders - but a vintage Rickenbacker does both feel, and sound different to a new one. Pickups, construction...but it's all down to personal choice. Great to have the option!
19.
Am i wrong Spongebob.? it won't be the first time.
Not a man of your great taste! Super choices. I believe Chaka recorded her version very soon after (maybe even at the same time) as AWB's 'Shine' came out in '80, CK's version in April '81. I think I need to get out more.......!
20. Great band, love all the albums (except Cupids In Fashion!). They all just get better the more you live with them. The track, 'Watcha Gonna Do For Me?' was recorded by AWB first, and is actually a Hamish Stuart co - write. Good call, it's a corker.
21.
... and in other news, Paul Kantner dead.
Sad news. A very talented player and writer. Listening to the Woodstock gig again, I'm just awestruck at the performance - played in the morning, so no massive light-shows or pyrotechnics (don't think there was any of that at that weekend!), it's just a great band really working it....songs being stretched out, but retaining vitality and power. JC on fire. In the days where the Glasto headliners 'show' is almost bigger than the songs themselves, it is quite sad, an era and idealism in music from a time long gone that we're unlikely to ever experience again.
22. Nice score, George - gotta love a MB!
23. Motorhead - Another Perfect Day. Always been a strong contender for one of their very best for me. Can you beat this for an album opening? That tone! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4wMn21DePs
