Jack Casady, isolated Somebody to Love at Winterland 1969
spongebob replied to EssentialTension's topic in General Discussion
This thread got me seriously listening to some 'Airplane. I'd heard a bit, some years back, not enough to grab me. Went straight in with the studio albums, and have also been hearing some of the live stuff too. I must say, what an amazing band. The Woodstock performance is pretty stunning, as is some of the stuff from the Filmore, too. Storming stuff...and Jack's playing is so driving - what a tone. -
What an abomination of spelling! Premium basses? Ideally vintage???? I'm not sure who's got the bigger problem - the writer of the ad, or the individual that replies to him!
As opposed to a passive bassist?
Very good! Although strictly speaking, my basses are passive.....!

I've been a member since around 2008, and always take a look most days. Don't always post, but make sure I catch up on what's going on. As an active bassist, I don't see any reason why I wouldn't want to keep on Basschatting....music and playing has always been my main interest in life. I've bought and sold, been helped many times, and have also (fingers crossed) been of help at some points too. I just avoid OT! The only other bass forum I frequent is Rickresource - not a place for the faint-hearted!
he did explain it to me but I don't really understand but he said it was no good. It adjusts very slightly but then slips back
I bought a USA Jazz bass a few years back. It was when they introduced the Custom Shop pup upgrades (2012?), and a dealer was selling this off cheaper, as old stock. The bass had the same problem as the OP's - adjust truss rod, only for neck to keep returning to it's 'original' position. Upshot was, Fender took the bass back, put on a new neck, full set up, and couriered the bass back to me for free. Excellent service from Fender. However, I'm not a Fender guy, and so the bass was sold on. The new owner got a beauty after all the work!

Here's another one - wrap some plumbers PTFE tape around the thread, and screw back in. Did this on one of mine recently after seeking similar advice - works a treat!

Very sad. Always loved Mott - although I was only born the year they split. I even had a letter printed in Kerrang! in the early 90's asking for a Mott discography (pre-internet of course), so I could (and did) collect all of their records. Great albums. Also a talented producer for the Peel show for many years as well. I'm cranking up 'Brain Capers' as I write. Timeless music which will never grow old.

Love Jaco, had trouble getting the DVD as they kept pushing the UK release date back. I bit the bullet, and ordered the blu-ray from Amazon US - good price as it turned out. Got it in under a week. Lo and behold, it finally was available in on the UK site 3 days after mine arrived. ....and I've not even watched it yet!! Got my long weekend from work this week, and we're not gigging, so it's going to be a Jaco-fest chez Spongebob!

Used to gig this in a covers band a few years back. Band were all really happy when we finally perfected it - good fun song to play.

Do you listen to the Lyrics or the Music.?
spongebob replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Both, but it's the music first - the piece has to be right musically for me to worry too much about the lyrics. You can have a track with the best words around, but if it's musically awful, it's bad....but there's plenty of musically great tracks with terrible lyrics....! -
When I had 'new' basses, I always tried to keep them as nice as possible. Now both my basses are old/used/vintage, I treat them the same. However, a knock would be now less noticeable given the fact that they've been played for 42 years! One is more knocked than the other, and that's more the gigging bass. At least all the relic'ing is genuine!

Fender 9050 flats are the business. I've never been happier with a string, and I used nickels for years beforehand.

'Lemmy - The Movie' is getting another showing this Friday on BBC 4, worth a look if you've not seen it. My telly guide described it as a film about 'the late Motorhead frontman'. I still can't get used to seeing the words 'Lemmy' and 'late' together...I always thought he'd outlive most of us. Still a shock....but we'll always have the records and the gigs.

Precisions - How do you justify having two (or more!)?
spongebob replied to jbasst's topic in Bass Guitars
Justify having more than one ? I'm saying nothing
Oh go on, please.....! -
Precisions - How do you justify having two (or more!)?
spongebob replied to jbasst's topic in Bass Guitars
I haven't got any Fenders, but I am in the '2 of the same bass' camp if that helps. Mine are both strung with the same Flats, as well. My justification is that, a) I'm an enthusiast of 4001 basses before the pickup changed position, rarity as they get older means I had to grab whilst I could, and lastly, c) If anything happens to one of them, I can lock the other one away so I'll always own one of my dream basses! -
It should have been a New Cab Day... but grrrrrrr, couriers...
spongebob replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
Glad you got it sorted! I had the same from City Link a few years back. Supposed to be collecting - waited all day, nothing. Contacted them the next, only to be told that there was no-one in, and the driver left a card. Problem was, they never came, and never left a card, either! Eventually drove to the nearest depot to drop the bass off. Never used them again! -
I have bad points as well, like so many others on here. When the band had a bit of a crisis last year, I had a time of thinking if it ended, I'd give up, as I couldn't face starting with another band from scratch again - not that I could even see a band that was worth joining. I've no intention in doing the same old for the sake of it. However, got some new blood, and it seems to have taken off again. I also had a call out of the blue to dep with a band before Christmas (I used to be in a band with their guitarist), and had a good time with them....having played in the same band for over 3 years, it was refreshing to kind of play away from home a bit! So from 6 months ago - we've got a reinvigorated band, a dep gig which has led to the possibility of joining another, and I'm having another old bass restored. Hang in there - if it's supposed to happen, it will. Things have a habit of turning up when you need them.

Even thought I'm not a Bowie-head, there's still a list a mile long I could choose. I'm going to plump for 'Golden Years', or 'Fame'.

You'll Never work In This Town Again....

No, no, no, no! Run a mile, and spread the word! -
Nice post Roceci, very funny! Good thing I'm GAS free for the mo. At this moment, I have no intention of ever buying another bass!

He he, just saw my alter-ego get a nod! Even though I sold the bass on back in the Summer (it was amazing, but I'm just not a Fender man), I can echo Lozz's comments. The bass sounded awesome, both depth and power. I even recorded my band's last EP with it...first time I've ever recorded with anything except a Ricky. The last as well, not any slur on the tone at all...it just isn't me, but I'm stoked that I did it. Probably the 'biggest' sounding bass I've owned, big +1 to the CS pups in there.

Gigging bassists... how many basses do you own?
spongebob replied to The-Ox's topic in General Discussion
30/35 gigs per year, 2 basses. Both Rickenbacker 4001's, both from 1974, both strung with Fender flats. Only ever take 1 to gigs, no backup. Currently only have the 1, as the other is undergoing some important restoration work, but is due back late Jan/early Feb. This is a fairly 'new' acquisition - but I have been gigging the other one for a bit now. I will be alternating them for gigs - not an issue, as both are 'my' sound anyway! -
The Next Generation Of Players To Inspire.....?
spongebob replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
As a young musician myself (18) I see no less attraction to 'band' music than people two or three times my age do. I have a wide range or influences from the 50's to the present day, in the way of Charles Mingus, John Paul Jones, Chris Squire, Jaco and Geddy through to modern players such as Michael League, Janek Gwizdala, Justin Chancellor, Amos Williams and Stuart Zender etc. Although as times have progressed there has been a mass saturation of modern music, there is still a lot of great music to be found, and influence with it. There seems to be a preconceived notion that young musicians can't be influenced by music that is not of their time, which is undoubtedly misinformed.
Brilliant post. This is exactly what we need to be hearing...all very well put. -
The Next Generation Of Players To Inspire.....?
spongebob replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
Some really good points made. Personally, I would like to see more 'mainstream' records mixed with greater prominence to bass - a recent-ish one I can recall is the Bruno Mars track, 'Precious'. It's my big nag of the last x-amount of years, and a change that direction may open it up a little? Like on 'Later' when they regularly bury the bass. -
The one I'm playing, and the other one. Interchangeable, and unisex names!
