I'd changed the pickups to Classic Amplification, 70's style as well, as the modern 4003 sound I find far to dense and lacking....and I've tried a few! I eventually picked up a '74 4001 (not my first I've owned, but my fave). Had this since earlier this year, and it sounds like I wanted to 4003 to be....and it's a YOB bass too! .....and it's sticking with the original bridge!

That's good! Has the '75 not been discontinued now? I thought it was replaced by the AVRI '74?

Our trio is for us, our only band. That was a necessity when we hired a new drummer - no second band'ers. It means no diary clashes, booking is simple, and the whole things run much more smoothly. As a gigging band, 2-3 times a month (more in recent weeks), I could not give my time to anything else - it would basically clash.

I've had to change my vote from 1 to 2, as I've ordered another one. Always nice to have something else to play on....although 2 is my limit, regardless!

I'd love to know how much the Ged's differ in tone from a standard 70s Jazz bass? I suppose the closest 'new' version would be the AV '74?

I really like the sound of these. Saw some YouTube clips where it nails the 'Tom Sawyer' tone - which for years I thought was Ged's Ricky...!

I remember a corker some years back - a muso wanted ad, with the sign-off, 'no dickheads'! It made me laugh - or imagine some poor player thinking somewhere 'that's the band for me - but as I am dickhead, I'd better not apply'!

I always mean to check them out - it's just their name which has always deterred me!

I must admit, didn't really know much about this band, except for a photo of Ian Curtis from Joy Division wearing one of their t-shirts. Started doing some digging and listening, and I'm impressed. I suppose it's progressive, but I think there's an awful lot going on. I believe they were based in Germany - I think I detect a little of the 'Krautrock' genre in the mix too. There's some tasty bass stuff on there as well. I gave their live album from '74 a whirl yesterday, and it was quite a revelation. Just nice to hear something exciting - even though it's about 40 years old.....! They seem to be a band that kind of slipped under the radar - you never see their name or albums cropping up in features. Got some more to discover, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the journey!

I've been enjoying 'Bar Rescue' on the tele - US bars do appear to be quite different indeed to our boozers over here.

Got it on to record tonight. Not expecting much, but it's still music on TV...... Surely this series has to feature U2, one (or more) or the brothers' Gallagher's latest projects, or Coldplay? Those guys really need the exposure, we really don't hear enough about them.

I must admit, I have close in recent months. Just dissatisfaction with bands/gigs/musicians. Music has always been my life - social life, what fills up my head all day. I started to think how, or if, I could live without it - and wondered how much I do it because of the love of it, or simply because it's just 'what I do'? I've played with other musicians for nearly 30 years, started jamming at 11...so all my life, really. I feel the band and gig scene has definitely shrunk, and the opportunities are less. However, I think you can reach a point when you feel like you've done it all - I could play the same gigs for another 10 years, and they'll be still screaming for Mustang....! Like you've reached as far as it'll go, and it's just an endless loop of repetition after that....with a Mustang soundtrack. As has been mentioned - do you play anything just to be out there playing? Or do you fill your time with something else? Bad patch, I hope....

I've not listened to much Van in years, this has pushed me into catching up! Typical BBC, though - the camera spends a lot of time showing the hipsters in the audience, and Cerys Matthews. Oh dear! Van's band is relatively stripped down, and the certainly are a crack-hot bunch. Bassist plays electric and upright - not showy, but it's pretty tasty and fits in to perfection. All (I think, or most) of his back catalogue has been made available on the streaming sites in the last week or so (great news for subscribers like me!) so I might start digging a bit more of old Van The Man!
