1. Love that album. I always imagine how it would have changed had Donny not sadly departed. BTA is a total classic. I've heard some stories about his latter years, and it's very sad indeed.
2. Great artist - love his work. College room-mate with Donny Hathaway as well!
3. +1! I finished it in 4 days - all 400 pages. It's an awesome read, but quite depressing at it approaches the end. Don't wait until Christmas - it's brilliant! I was lucky enough to catch the band in November 1997 (with SH and KB), not long before the US bust up. Rates as one of the best, if oddest, gigs I've ever seen. The tension on that stage was, to quote MES, a powder-keg! It was like the whole band was going to explode right in front of me - what happened a few months later was no surprise. They played the riff to 'Masquerade' for about 5+ minutes before MES appeared - it looked like he wasn't coming on...and from their worried glances, they didn't think he was either! Seen them twice since then - but nowhere near as good. The difference made by SH - and without a doubt KB - is immense. No coincidence that for me, the albums made since '97 aren't a patch on those days. If I pick up a Fall LP, it's got to have our man Steve on the bottom end.
4. Great stuff. +1 on up to (and including) 'Drama'. Although Squire's bass does seem to get a bit tamer in the mixes after 'Close To The Edge'. Maybe I just need to get out more....
5. http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/oct/01/the-big-midweek-life-inside-the-fall-review-mark-e-smith-steve-hanley Out now, just ordered my copy from Amazon. Looks like a great read - big influence on my style. Very underrated player IMHO.....For me, The Fall have never recovered from his departure. Steve and Karl Burns (amazing drummer) were a formidable team. An autobiography from a bass player....what's not to like!
6.
+1000 What a hero, although don't let anyone tell you hewas from Cork. They stole him from Donegal.
....and he spent a few years growing up in Derry as well, although the street has apparently been demolished now. I was there talking to a guy a few weeks back, and was saying how the city likes to claim it's little bit of Rory as well. I was actually wearing my RG t-shirt! Never got to see him - age-wise, kind of just missed out - by I'm a huge fan, and any new product is always welcome. I wish he was still here to share the love he justifiably receives.
7. A few years back, I had a couple of questions about Steve Hanley, ex-bass player of many years from The Fall. I contacted his band at the time - Tom Hingley And The Lovers - through Myspace (it was a few years ago), and was surprised to get a response from Tom himself. He was very nice, and gave me Steve's direct email, suggesting I drop him a line. I did, and a couple of months passed with no response. Then one day, a reply! He was very honest, told me all about his basses and amps, and said that when his current rig gives out, he'll pack it in. He was very happy to be asked the questions, as he said that as a bass player, 'most people don't understand'! Same sort of time, I messaged Steve Garvey, ex-Buzzcocks, to ask what bass he used on 'Strange Thing'. Again, received a nice reply. This time, it was 'I can't remember'! He followed it by suggesting it was some fancy new Ibanez active thingy, but he had no idea what. Just gave me the idea that if you want to know something, ask! Please share your similar experiences!
8. 1! Just my Ricky 4003. It's had quite a few mods, so for me after owning a good few, it's the one I've always heard in my head. I really should have a back-up.....I sold one recently, as I never used it! Trouble is, when you finally have 'the' bass, everything else just feels wrong.
9. I've had a good few 4003/4001's and often the saddles are not cut centrally! There's a lot of examples of the strings then sitting well off the pickup poles. This is one of the reasons that I changed a few parts on my Ric - what the factory produce could be far improved upon IMHO. Previous Rics I've lived with how things were - but I decided that I just want the one bass, play it to bits, and make it my personal Ric. Now it sounds, plays, and feels better than any other one I've ever had!
10.
Stunning headstock that spongebob, I was really glad when Rickenbacker went back to the longer headstock and walnut wings. The Ultralites look the part too Bought the satin USA Hipshots for my old Fender off Mark at Bass direct actually. Top guy and really helpful to boot.
Thanks Miles! I must admit, I'm really happy with the look - and the incredible weight saving! Big +1 on Mark as well - I wasn't too sure which type to go for - but Mark assured me that these would look the part for a Ric....and he was right!
11. Mark at Bass Direct did mine for me, as a Ric is 2+2....and it's all genuine USA.
12. I've got a set fitted to my 4003 - genuine USA - I bought mine from Mark at Bass Direct. Really love them - they are NOT a direct fit if you use all the Hipshot parts, it does involve drilling some holes. I didn't mind, as my Ric is a bit away from standard anyway with other mods, and I wanted the most comfy and playable Ric I could get....and these help a great deal. The weight saving is amazing, especially if your bass is quite heavy to start with - as mine is. ....and I love the look as well!
13. I love JB - got loads of his stuff. He had a run of amazing albums which lasted to the late 70's. To achieve what he did - his upbringing was terrible - makes it even more astonishing. He's one of the true greats, that really doesn't get the mentions he deserves in my book. Bar the odd 'Pappa's...' and the like, a lot of his work seems to be a bit under the radar for many people. Some of it still hard to find - the 'Reality' album, for example. One of my fave JB jams - awesome drumming from Clyde Stubblefied - the original Funk Drummer! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYsAGlOxVpM
14. Perhaps it's because on most modern recordings, it's been reduced to a dull, lifeless thump with no definition. Maybe less are taking it up, as they probably can't hear it, and don't know what it actually does!
15. Just read this sad news - http://classicrock.teamrock.com/news/2014-09-14/john-gustafson-dead-at-72 Loved his work with Roxy - 'Out Of The Blue' has always been a top bass-track for me. RIP John.
16. 1 here. We're pretty busy, and we're all fully into what we do. Got a new drummer recently, and the proviso was that he wasn't in anything else - just adds complications and clashes. Fairplay if you can balance it, but every second band-er I've ever played with has always had the 'can't do....' thing. Members in just 1 ready to go, but getting held back by the other with too many commitments. Always helps if you're all on the same page. We can get together at a moments notice if needs be, which means we're always busy most week of the year doing something!
17.
C'mon guys, why is this still here? I've got a CIJ in Sunburst and it the second best bass I've ever owned. Hey spongebob, can't wait to hear the EP. Bernie Torme- awesome.
Thanks! It's a great bass, but no takers in BC land! EP ('Bring It...') is stream-able through all the usual sites (Google Play, Deezer, Spotify, etc.) and to buy through Amazon, iTunes, and the rest. Released earlier in the year. Bernie is a top man to work with as well!
18. First bump - 243 views, but no takers yet! Think I've priced this about right? Virtually new bass and £100+ hardcase? With the Badass, it's a depreciation-proof future classic!
19. Nearly £400 for a Squier? Blimey!

NBD!

Ice cool!
21. Good choices, great band. I'm gradually streaming my way through their catalogue. Fave so far - 'Eat A Peach' - superb! Bit worried about after that, as net consensus seems to knock them a bit after about '73....
22. Up for grabs, sadly, is my Geddy Lee Jazz bass. I bought this in April - restring, set-up, and new Gator hardcase (about £110). Condition is immaculate. It looks like it's just come out of the box. Even under light, I can only see a couple of almost undetectable indentations on the rear from my strap - that's it! They won't even picture, they are that small, and not really worthy of mention. The case is also A1, as new. Neither bass or case has been modded in any way - they are as they left the factories. I've played it at band practice a couple of times, and that's about it. I bought it as a back-up bass, but TBH it's too good for that. An ongoing house project means I need the cash right now, and may invest in a cheapie down the line. The bass-ics - if you've got this far, you know what they're all about - great neck, Geddy grind in tone, and the all-important Badass 2 bridge (which they no longer come with). They've been MIM for a couple of years, and this one has a '13' serial number, and a Mexico build. I have previously owned a MIJ Ged, and without bias, this is a far better bass. The pickups are much stronger (a weak point on the MIJ in my opinion), and the whole bass is really stable. The neck has stayed perfectly as it was months ago. Please check my feedback on here - you'll be getting a brilliant bass, a few months old, well packed, in an as new hardcase. No trades - sorry - bank transfer please. £620 will get this to your door via UPS. Postage in the UK is free. I'm located in New Romney, Kent - collection possible. Happy looking!
23. Great memory of him really giving it some on the 'Isle Of Wight' footage. Sad indeed.
