1. That relic'd Geddy is about 3.5k....and it's 'road worn'!
2. Been doing a bit of digging since I picked up my used Geddy MIM. Do I take it now all of the signature models are Mexican-produced? There's a fair few. I suppose in my head I always thought of anything MIM as a bit of a poor relation to the US Standards....but obviously they don't offer US alternatives to these basses, like the Standards MIM and US. Even though the GL feels exactly the same as my old MIJ, maybe even sounds better to my ears. Is Fender trying to up the MIM image a bit? There seemed to be bit of a debate when they moved the GL and MM manufacture from Japan....but after all, where it's screwed together doesn't reflect where individual components are constructed? ....and if you want a signature model, I can't see any alternative!
3. Here's how I did mine. Do I assume that the tension on the neck, etc. is the same regardless how the string is wrapped around the tuning post? Up, through, around, tied together....?
4. I listen to the songs there, and it all just sounds like typical late-Bunnymen fare. They seemed to turn in Travis or Coldplay after they reformed! Even though that was pre-Coldplay, you get the gist....just that style of music which totally turns me off! I like the early stuff, but I think they're a long way from that now, especially as Les P has been gone a long time now. I always think that Will S is a great guitarist, but somewhat underused compared to their earlier sound. Personally, I think they should have called it quits after 'Porcupine'. Yes, before 'Ocean Rain'.....sorry!
5. Thanks Mart, I do love the finish on this one. My first Ric 10+ years ago was a FG - was nowhere near as nice TBH. Only had the smaller inlays, no walnut wings, and always sounded like it was being played through a muffler! I picked this one up last year, and it's been my go-to ever since. The good ones are out there.....!
6. Thanks chaps, must admit I'm loving this one. So easy to get a great Geddy tone as well, really cutting. Will be taking this to rehearsal tomorrow!
7. Here's my FG - with added Tube Ampology Bezel and Hipshot bridge. Sounds and plays better than ever!
8. Thought I'd post a picture of my new-to-me Geddy Jazz. It's about 6 months old, immaculate condition, got it end of last week. It's one of the new MIM ones. I've had a couple before, a few years back, and stupidly sold them on. TBH I can't see, feel or hear even the slightest difference between the MIJ and MIM. It is exactly - from memory obviously - the same as what I had before, which is what I wanted as a back-up for my main Ric now (pictured next to the GL in the Gear Porn forum on the sofa). It even seems to weigh a very similar amount. Maybe I'm going mad, but having owned a couple of MIA Standard Jazz's over the years, I actually prefer the feel and tone of the GL's. I've sometimes struggled with Jazz necks (the Road Worn I could not play - just the way it was shaped dug right into my forefinger), but although super-slim (especially compared to the Ric) it plays really well and super smooth. ......and it's got the Badass! Here's a couple of pics to prove ownership......
9. Here are my two - my Rickenbacker 4003, and Geddy Lee Jazz.
10. I'll leave more next for sure! I'm used to my Ric with its very small heads, 3mm is fine on that. The Fender tuners are much bigger! It's stayed fine overnight - so the problem is totally fixed. Funny thing is I bought another used GL a few years ago (sadly sold), and the previous owner had strung it in exactly the same way.
11. Managed to fix it.....I think! I resrtung, with one turn around the post, and the second putting the string through the centre gap in the machine head, and around then on (I banked on 3/3.5mm excess, should have left 4). My last GL was a used example as well, and I remember it being strung as such when I got it. I'd love to know if it's just my GL, or if this is common......or if everyone strings in this way and I was previously wrong! I've always done in and around, never used the centre gap before....!
12. Its funny as E and A went in fine.....very strange, as its both D and G.
13. Picked up an immaculate used Geddy Lee bass the other day. Got a new set of Daddario 45-105 to fit. E and A fine, but the D and G simply won't grip in the machine heads. They go in, the start to slip as soon as any tension is applied. I can't understand why - I've resrung hundreds of times on loads of basses (including my old GL a few years back) and never had this before. I've tried the old fitted set back in, and they're fine - which rules out the bass. I'm pulling my hair out here with a half strung bass - help!!
14. I think it's also cosmetic - it's quite a big part of the overall look. It's also one less aspect that ties it to the real deal. Not a biggie individually, but when looked at audially and visually, just takes a something away. Especially when they've fitted them since the start of the model, and it's always been a part of (in the description) what contributes to the sig bass.
15. Can't disagree...but on a Geddy, I think (to me anyway) the most identifiable aspects are the BA and the neck profile. The other aspects are equally important, but I think you could change the tuners, and notice them less than the BA.
16. I thought there'd have been more about this online, but I can't find anything. I can't understand why Fender, with all their power, wouldn't keep producing BA 2's, under licence even, as surely it's a big part of the GL and MM sig models. As was rightfully observed above, how can they be real signature models without Badass bridges?
17. Can I just add that I listened to the Kevin Shirley remix today of 'Come Taste The Band'. Always loved it, and the remixed tracks sounds amazing. It used to be one of my fave DP albums, and I think it still is. I didn't realise first time around how good Tommy Bolin was, or what a recorded legacy he had - especially the fusion stuff. What an inspired choice for DP! Tragic end, though.
18.
Ah you have connection with Mayo! That's my home county. Purple were big in Ballina in the 70's
I have! Specifically Castlebar (Breaffy) and Kiltimagh. I was born in Mayo, but grew up over here. Long family history all around Mayo. I've got a place now in Kiltimagh, which I'll come to full time when the time (and money, job, etc...!) Is right. All of this from DP - probably still being blasted in Ballina!
19. Nice to see 'Burn' getting some love. Certainly the sound of a band reinvigorated. Always loved 'Come Taste.....' as well. Different, but a little bit funky too. Just amazing how all this happened 70-75. When big bands today take 6 months to tune thier floor toms, Purple would have managed 2 abums and about 6 world tours! Got to love the improvisation of the live stuff as well - another big selling point for me as I love bands streching out. Another aspect of 'rock' acts of a time now gone. Perhaps this is why pretty much any 'rock' bands I love all finished in the era I was stumbling around in nappies!
20.
It's not often that absolutely nothing grabs me in an entire 'later' but they managed it this week sadly, fast forwarded through pretty much every act. Not been much in previous shows in this series either but one or two performers I've enjoyed. It's that sort of show which is why I haven't seen it 'live' for years, always record it.
+1.
21. I think it's quite amazing what's on record 70-75 - the drumming especially. Really free...just a shame bands don't play like it now. Saying that, I bought 'The House Of Blue Light' when it came out, and they didn't play like it then either!

23. Isn't is great 'rediscovering' old bands/records that you'd put away? I used to listen to loads of Deep Purple as a teen (in the 80s). Kind of got into other stuff, and put them to the back of my mind. I suppose at Uni and the like, it wouldn't have been the coolest. Few weeks back I was going through my Google Play, and up popped a bit of DP. My word, how foolish was I filing this away? I hadn't realised what an influence that Roger Glover/Glenn Hughes on my sound. I'm kind of remembering that my first view of a Ric may have been on the back of 'Deepest Purple'? I'm just amazed how powerful the records are - just the intensity of the rhythm section, the kind of free nature of the material. It just sounds so fresh to me. Makes modern rock records seem very dull in comparison. Just though I'd like to share this! Just on the concept that no matter what different path you go down, what you get into, some stuff from your very start can still sound good. .....and how it may be influencing you without your knowledge!
24. I thought Metallica would be better suited to the (well past their prime) 'legends' slot these days!
