Not a fan either - everything does come full circle, but it's just too derivative for me. Could be the Au Pairs!

He's still here - but Lemmy glimpses Old Father Time
spongebob replied to The Dark Lord's topic in General Discussion
I think the thread title aged me faster than a night out with the great man.......! For me, Lemmy IS rock 'n' roll. -

Every Rush topic always ends up an old vs. new debate! I love the old stuff, and I love the new stuff. I'm a Rush fan, and I like how they've developed and changed through the years.

Just wanted to add - they sounded awesome! Playing old-skool R'n'B in a trio, it really gives us a bite I think we lacked before. Lots of depth and thump.....exactly how I hoped. So a big thanks to all those who helped - advice taken, purchase made, a P bass happy!!

Gigging the flats tonight - so we'll see how we go!

Rickenbacker 4001, sold locally on Ebay. Failed to sell first time around, could have snapped it up for about £800, when a 4001 was (at the time) normally going for about £1500+. It had recently been totally given a once-over by The Bass Gallery as well. Totally immaculate example. Thing is, I just didn't have the cash....now I wish I'd found it from somewhere...... I owned a VM Jazz for a day this year, bought as a backup. Quite simply, same as the OP, I returned it. Really nasty piece of firewood. Maybe I was unlucky, but it just felt horrible! Looked great, though. I wish Fender would use some of the VM/CV shades on the USA Standard range.
I thought JH said that Rory Gallagher was the "Best Guitar Player" In that JH was asked what's it like to the best guitarist in the world and JH said "I don't know, you need to ask Rory Gallagher"....Of course I may have that completely wrong.
Actually, right U.B.! I actually read something about this the other day on a Rory forum. Consensus was that Jimi's quote is in fact urban myth.....a great thing if he did say it, but no-one can seemingly prove any basis if he did. Interviews can't be traced, some said he said after Woodstock.... Either way, you've gotta love the fact that maybe he said it....

I do wonder what I'd do when my current band finishes - not that is yet (that I know!). In fact, I don't think I've ever been happier....which would make things even tougher. The thought of again, trailing the classifieds, the false starts.....I think I'd definitely have some time out to re-charge, and get some enthusiasm back.

'Aftershock' came out last week, got my copy over the weekend. After Lemmy's recent health scares, it's great to hear the band back doing what they do best. I really like it, but I really like Motorhead - I got into them when I was about 13, and at 39, still love them now. It's the one band that I've never left - despite my love of lots of different stuff since! It's loud, fast, it's rock 'n' roll. It's brilliant - they never let you down.
3 members on Later (including V White) but it was just an interview, no performance. They were all looking their age!
I watched this - on the Sky description it had them listed....I got excited as I thought it'd be the first band this series I'd like to see perform. Unfortunately, just the chat - but they did show a nice clip of 'Fantasy'.

Very sad - a true original.

Sounds great! Got a gig on Friday, so want to get them on and a bit bedded in beforehand. Consensus seems to be that these really suit the Precision (as kindly mentioned above - thanks guys).

After much reading, and a general dissatisfaction with the zingy nature of my tone, I've taken the plunge and ordered some GHS Precision Flats. They're going on my US Standard P. I did try some D'addario Chromes some years back, but I can't really remember how they felt....or why I stopped using them! Currently using D'addario Nickels, 45-105 (same gauge as the ordered flats). Any ideas if there's a big difference in tension between them and the GHS's? Reports on these seem to be good - and Youtube gives some good vids of them being played. I just want a nice old-skool thump!

Rory Gallagher - BBC Sessions - 2CD set - 22 tracks. I bought this used as you can't buy it on download. Condition is good but used - some surface marks on disc 1, and the booklet has been read! However, play is by no means affected, and the book is simply used - not ripped or anything. Cost about £10 new - so I'm only after £5, and that's with free postage. Grab yourself a Rory-related bargain! Payment by Paypal please. PM if interested - thanks for looking!

Excellent - thanks for the heads-up. Will go and set the Sky up now - I'm a Jimi devotee!

Rory Gallagher/ Ian Rankin Collaboration - Kickback City
spongebob replied to Donnyboy's topic in General Discussion
I've been reading about this on a Rory forum. I'm a massive RG fan. RG was a major crime novel fan, and apparently this is how the project came about. The recent remasters of his albums sound excellent, and if it brings new fans to his work, then that's great. Has anybody on here been to see the 'Band Of Friends'? I'm a bit put off as it looks like a tribute act - I think Gerry's playing was/is great, and Ted McKenna on drums is a draw, but the frontman just looks like an RG impersonator to me....right down to the dress sense and identical Strat! -
I see your location is Mayo on occasions-- I am originally from Ballina but am now in exile here in Galway
Indeed - Kiltimagh to be exact! I've been going over since I can remember.....I was born there (Mayo), have family outside Castlebar (near Manulla and beyond), but grew up in the UK. Can't afford to go over full-time yet, and my house there is a work in progress! Naturally, I've been to Ballina, and have also visited Galway a few years back. Great city, bit livelier than rural Mayo! If I could get the work, I'd be there tomorrow - and as soon as my job here goes (which it may well), then it'll force me to get the house finished....just need a few extra Euro first....... +1. My favorite DF album is actually 'Be Seeing You', the 1st one they made with Gypie after Wilko left. I love the Wilko albums, but I think Gypie's arrival gave them a real punky kick on that one.

Why does JAZZ seem to be so widely disliked?

Why does JAZZ seem to be so widely disliked?
spongebob replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I like really like lots of jazz and fusion. That's it, really. Just thought I'd throw my POV in! -
Been looking at the classifieds and Ebay recently, and there seems to be quite a few vintage basses going for very good prices indeed. Over the weekend, a '74 Ricky 4001 with case, went for about £960. It wasn't one of the collection only items either - the seller would post. A couple of years back, you wouldn't get much change for £1600 plus. Now they're less than a new one! Are people still interested as ever in 'vintage'? New Fender's etc., are still selling for more than some older ones, so the money is still circulating. Just wondering if any BC'ers actively only play exclusively 'old' (say 30 years older or more) against newer? It looks like it's never been a better time to buy. I've been tempted (had a couple of older ones myself) but always worried about electrics and the like failing at a gig......

Will you read Morrissey's Penguin Classic in the making?
spongebob replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I like his quotes, but I detest his music....and I can really leave The Smiths, too. Always leaves me cold. But if I saw the book cheap, it could be worth a read. I've read autobiographies before from people that I'm not a fan of, but because they provide an interesting read. On a side note, I used to work with a plum that was a Mozzer-maniac. He like to be called Morrissey, and even had a name tag made with it written on! He owned over 70 Mozzer t-shirts, it was all he'd be seen in! He didn't share my musical opinion that the first Smiths LP was passable in places, and then it was downhill all the way!
