New 'Later' Series On The Way....Yawwwwwnnnn!
spongebob replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
I've been watching the TOTP repeats on BBC4 for ages. I think it's mostly really good - the current '78 ones are TV gold. You get punk, soul, novelty, and Legs & Co.! Current number one is 'Summer Nights' - love it! -
New 'Later' Series On The Way....Yawwwwwnnnn!
spongebob replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
Don't know how true this is, but an ex-bandmate of mine who plays full-time with a guy who's very well connected told me an appearance on 'Later' is normally part of a purchased PR package which includes other slots on radio/t.v., etc. He did mention it was in the thousands......! As I said, I can't validate this, but it would make sense as to why they tend to book the same artists/bands quite regularly, especially when they're pushing their latest 'my best work yet...' album. -
And Chas seems to be gradually turning into Jeff Lynne.
On 'Later' the other week, I noticed the same thing....and also the similarity between Dave and Maurice Gibb, especially with the hat he was wearing! Classic 50's P - New 'Used' Bass Day From BC!
spongebob replied to spongebob's topic in Bass Guitars
Thanks for all the kind comments. Must admit, I'm very happy with how it looks, actually better than I expected!
How does it compare to the MIA?
Quite interesting actually. I've not cranked it up through the rig yet, only through the Orange practice amp. Initial opinions are that it is definitely more 'woody' than a modern MIA - more old-skool than a new one. It has less P-bass grind, and more of a 'wooly' tone. Still P, but different. The feel is very similar indeed - obviously there's small differences in the price of materials used, but it doesn't feel much to me. I just wish the neck was a little less glossy, my only (minor) gripe. As I mentioned, I had a black one a few years back and loved it - amazing for the price. -
Classic 50's P - New 'Used' Bass Day From BC!
spongebob replied to spongebob's topic in Bass Guitars
Thanks Gary - yeah, it's tough to admit, but even in my late 30s my Dad is the most practical person I know - I'm hopeless at that sort of thing! I'm also doing to force my to use finger style in practice more, using a pick with the cover is very hard, and that's what I need - a good deterrent! -
New 'Later' Series On The Way....Yawwwwwnnnn!

I still get miffed by the amount of acts that appear time and time again, every time they've got a new record to promote. There's so many people, including established acts, that when they're in the UK, I always think....maybe.....please put them on, and not x band/act again for the 3rd series in a row...... -
I was taken as an 11 year old to see them in 1985! Must have been influenced - great live act. I can still remember how well they were received. I always remember the order of potting the coloured snooker balls from 'Snookerloopy'

I've been after a backup for my MIA P, and after spending time on the BC classifieds, opted for a Fender Classic 50's P. I had one a few years back, and loved it. So I thought to make it different from the MIA, I'd add the period touches. Always been a sucker for those! The bass was from Marcus on here, the thumbrest from Paul (Thunderbird), and the chrome I had to buy new, but very reasonable from an Ebay shop. Fitting was not too bad - I'm lucky to have a practical Dad, as I'm hopeless with anything involving practicality! So a quick restring and basic set-up, and she's good to go. It might not be for all, but here are the results.....

Just received a Guy Lewis thumb rest/tug-bar from Paul. Effortless transaction - superb comms throughout. Really great and a pleasure to deal with - many thanks Paul!

Just took delivery of Marcus' Honey Blonde Classic 50s Precision. What can I say? Bass is even better in the flesh than the photos! All exactly as described, excellent communication throughout the transaction. Deal with Marcus with 100% confidence.

Don't! I tried this for about a week, and my one bass went haywire in the neck department. Off it went for about 10 days, and I had to hurriedly source a backup. I'd never had one before, and on this basis, wouldn't again unless I wasn't gigging.

Santana - from the fantastic jazzy era of Welcome, Lotus, etc., to end up with dross like the direction they took after about 1979....

I've never played a Gibson or Tele bass....but the 'bassiest' basses I've played have all been P's.

Brand new today, just ripped to iTunes - and now up for grabs! Rory Gallagher 'Stage Struck' CD - this is the 2013 remaster with the bonus tracks. Live album originally released in 1980. Featuring the great Gerry Mcavoy on bass, and Ted McKenna on drums, one of Rory's most powerful trios. Only want £4.75 for this, and that includes 1st class postage as well! Payment by Paypal please - PM if interested.

As with a couple of my previous sales, as a digital user I have no use for physical CD's, so having bought to rip, here's a chance to buy them even cheaper! 2 albums from the best era of Jazz fusion - both featuring Stanley Clarke on bass. 'Where Have I Known You Before' from 1974, and 'No Mystery' from '75. CD's are both excellent condition, pretty much as new. I'm after only £5.00 each, or £9.00 for the pair - postage free. Payment by Paypal please - PM if interested!

First heard this about 20 years ago. Loved it then, love it now....'directions in music' indeed. It's a real 'desert island' album in the sense you could listen to everyday for the rest of your life, and still be finding new elements you didn't hear before. Late 60's onward is when I think Miles was on fire (until the mid-70's retirement) - every time I listen to anything from that entire period - it's simply breathtaking. He released lots of live stuff as well, all equally awesome. +1 on the mention of Teo as well. He was the genius who put it all together. I remember a quote from the great man at the time of the release of the 'complete' box sets (BB, On The Corner, etc.) - he was against the release as they simply "put all the crap back in"! BTW - for the OP, there's a great release from a few years back, 'Bitches Brew Live', super live stuff from that period. So here's 'Spanish Key' in all of it's Isle Of Wighty glory.... Is that a heavily-modded 50's P? Big fan of Billy Cobham - his rolls are phenomenal.

I've always had VT down as a bit of a kind of Rush's 'punk' album - very noisy and vibrant, quite unique. I'll buy the new one, but I do love the 'old' one as well TBH!

Geddy has always been a major influence on me. Must add Steve Hanley, Noel Redding, JJ Burnel....all very important. I tend to think my influences have grown over the years, as I listen to masses of soul and jazz now (have done for years), but that wasn't on my radar when I started. Now I'd be including Jaco, Stanley, Chuck Rainey (appears on loads of stuff I love) and about a million others. Big fan of Gerry Mcavoy as well - I'm currently in an R'n'B band, so his style is never far from my radar.
