1.
The aforementioned Nine pints of lager usually help me nod off...
When does nodding off become passing out.....!
2. I'm a life-long pick player. Have started to use more fingerstyle in recent months, more in practice and rehearsal though TBH. Some of the R'n'B the band plays is so quick, I could never imagine me ever using fingers (fully ramped-up version of 'You Shouldn't Call The Doctor by Dr. Feelgood for example). I think I'm so used to 'my sound', that anything different sounds, well, different! +1 on having the skill to do both. It's something I'm working on.
3. Passive for me. I tried my luck some years back with a Fender Jaguar bass....perhaps not the best example of 'active', but I spent more time fiddling with the sound as the options were multiple! Didn't really get having to have a battery in it, either. Maybe I'm a bit of a Luddite - but for me a good passive bass does it all.
4. My second purchase of last week arrived today - the Original Album Classics Box Set from Fleetwood Mac. 3 individual albums in a cardboard slipcase. Bought from Amazon, and as a digital music user, played once to rip. Included are - 1. Fleetwood Mac (1968) 2. Mr. Wonderful (1968) 3. The Pious Bird Of Good Omen (1969) All stone-cold classics from the Peter Green era. Condition is, as new. As it came to me this morning! Couple of creases on the edge of the cardboard slipcase (just postal), that's it. I unwrapped it and ripped it. Looking for only £7, and that's 1st class post included. Payment by Paypal please - PM if interested! I've got plenty of BC feedback, so please buy with confidence.
5. Al Di Meola - Original Album Classics Box Set. Contains 5 individual CD albums - 1) Land Of The Midnight Sun (1976) 2) Elegant Gypsy (1977) 3) Casino (1978) 4) Splendido Hotel (1980) 5) Electric Rendezvous (1982) For any fan of the classic era of Fusion, these are a must - Return To Forever (obviously ADM was a member), Mahavishnu, etc. As with some of my previous sales, I bought these on CD as some are not available as MP3's (I'm a strictly digital user). This has been undone and ripped (ie played once) - condition is like new...actually, it was, today! Only want £10 posted. Payment by Paypal please - PM if interested.
6. +1 on much of what has already been said. Be rational - if they don't like it, so what! One of my old bands booked a gig about 180 miles away. Fee was £150....between 5! I did it the first time as it was in the diary when I joined, but they went and re-booked it for the same fee. I simply said that unless they re-negotiate, I wasn't willing to do the gig....it was a total dump in a bad area as well. Upshot was they didn't do it. They could have done it without me for all I cared. Self-preservation comes first - a few years more years ago I may have gone along with it, but I learned it's best to stick to your principles....everyone else does when it suits them!
7. Interesting topic. I played the P for the first time in a while with the band last night - it sounded really good. Thing is, I've been using the Jazz exclusively with them for the last few months - but I find to get the best 'in the mix' sound, I go for a P-type tone, as I find anything else can get a bit lost. So I thought I'd just take the P! I think if you're playing a Stingray/Jazz, etc., maybe you do need that extra bit of tweakingor help to get it right? I love Geddy's Jazz tone, but he's got the pre-amps and such to give it more bang....a standard full-on Jazz tone just gets buried when I try it!
8.
Tv related ish, The first head to head on Pointless was Bass Players.
I saw that! Knew them all except the name of The Killers' guy....knew his face and band, but not his name! Kim Deal got me a point......The Killers' guy was the Pointless answer.
9. http://www.nme.com/news/kanye-west/72544 Once again, we're to be treated by acts that have been on before. What happened to 'Later' actually surprising us - all they seem to book is the same old established acts, or a predictable latest big thing in the music press. But it's music on TV, so I will be Sky +'ing it...every week....and then ranting about what they should be having on!
10. I've had mine since 2003 - would deffo buy another tomorrow if I needed to. Superb stands - mine's been everywhere!
11. Never....as an ex-drummer I just follow where I am without thinking about it. Suppose it just comes naturally to me - I've never even though about until I read this thread!
12. I've had a few, and they weren't bad. Just okay really. Call me a snob, but I'd take a MIA any day of the week. I'm aware that you can always find a bad MIA (although I haven't), but given the better quality of the materials used, it's what I feel happier playing. The MIM's I've had always felt a bit like they were 'nearly there' - nice basses, but just lacking the overall quality and play-ability of what I would define as the real deal. Why not buy a used MIA? I bought my Precision used, and my Jazz as new-old-stock. I've seen some of the MIM models cost more new that I paid for either of them...and they'll always have a the used currency of MIA. Only my 2p's worth of course - not knocking MIM's at all, but as soon as I could splash the cash, I went MIA.
13. Looks awesome - bet it sounds cracking too!
14.
I actually found reference to the Jazz being used on two tracks on Permanent Waves as well. Can't seem to find it now though.
I saw something similar somewhere too - I'm sure it said that the Jazz was used on 'Spirit Of Radio' and 'Entre Nous'?
15. I've come around to thinking one way....a way that I used to think was 'too obvious'...... Fender J or P. For what I used to spend on one R**********r, I paid for a used P, and a new (old stock, pre-2012) J. I could make do with one, but after having a main bass fail on me, I think a back-up is essential - but either could easily be 'the one' if needs be. Also, having dealt with Fender Customer Services, I can't rate them highly enough. Especially after multiple problems (and no solutions....'they're supposed to be like that....!' with the 'R' brand.
16. I've bought two basses from Mark and some straps. All done over the 'phone - he is always very chatty and helpful. When I'm in the market for some new amps or cabs, I'll definitely make the long journey to see him. Great service and products IMHO.
17. I hyper-ventilated at paying £25 for a t-shirt...er....which I then did! But that is very expensive - although very nice.
18. Ad says that Ged used the Jazz for 'Limelight' - but he's on record as saying that he played the Ric on that, but used the Jazz in the video ('Tom Sawyer being the reverse - Jazz on record, Ric in the video).
19. Great info, many thanks. I'll have to check this out further - have to get a gig there....although I think my hands might just stop working if Hamish was watching!
20. Big AWB fan here too. Only really heard them 'properly' in the last 6/7 years - too young first time around! All of the albums were re-issued a few years ago, bought them all. I love the 'space' in the songs - and bass parts. The tracks really breathe - great fun to jam to. Keep meaning to see the current incarnation live to see AG in action. With regards to Hamish, someone was telling me recently about a Kent pub he plays in all the time - for the life of me, I can't remember who told me or where it was.....!
21. Bought this on a a whim yesterday on download. Never really heard much MM before, but the reviews were good, so.... What can I say? What an amazing album. I've not been excited by a bass tone on records for years - but MM sounds sublime. Not just the bass - production is excellent, as it the material. I'm really impressed. Just when I thought that there would never be a good 'new' album again (guess I'm hard to please), then up pops this! If there's anything similar out there, I'd love to hear about it. I did peek at MM's early LP's, but they sounded a bit to 80's with the clangy synths, etc. But if there's similar stuff like this around - please share!
22. Thanks BF. Got a bit distracted - bought 'Renaissance' by Marcus Miller (my first bit of MM, sounds good) and 'Land Of The Midnight Sun' by Al Di Meola, primarily for the track featuring Jaco. Will get around to the AJ albums and maybe 'Procession' next time!
