1. I do work somewhere pretty rural, and the car is fully tinted so you can't see in!
2.
Just as an aside to your point of view about covers and fenders Rob, have a watch of Glastonbury over the weekend, and play the bass spotting game. You'll probably come out with about 90% fenders, and no covers bands. Not all of them will be old duffers either, and none of them will be dead.
Very true DV. I was watching 'Later.....' the other week and every band featured a Fender bass!
3. Wasn't quite sure what to call this thread for fear of misleading! I've got a gig outside this Saturday. Played outside a lot before, so that's no problem. I've got to take a bass and amps to work and leave it in the car during the morning, and it's going to be quite warm. Obviously then play in the open, which is also hot (if the forecast is right!) I was just worried about leaving a bass in a hot car. Never would have bothered me a few years back, but a Luthier once told me about the damage humidity does to a bass - obviously affects the wood, and once it's cooled down, can muck the set-up right up (had one done last week before gig was called!) Am I being daft? Any truth in this? Should I get the bass out ASAP, or just leave it in and play the thing (which I used to do!) Any ideas?
4. Rickie Lee Jones' debut has got some great bass work....great album generally as well.
5. Maybe some do prefer 'other' basses (I prefer my x Jazz or x P)- but as many have mentioned so far, they are simply copies (impreoved or otherwise) of Fender's original! So arguably, from the fact that they are still the basses to copy - Fender did get it right!
6. I agree a good Fender is hard to beat. I love Rics, but when it comes to reliability and a good plug 'n' go, they are hard to beat. Millions of records can't be wrong!
7. Cool - thanks!
8. How do I get hold of him? Website/prices?
9. Seen some on EBay - about £12 for an aftermarket, and nearly £40 for a genuine Fender! Anyone got any experience? Are the aftermarket ones a lot of old rubbish? Best stick to the real ones? Any suggestions where to buy? Ideally looking for a tortoiseshell for USA Jazz - black, currently with white pickguard....needs to go!
10. I was at the '91 tour as well, with all the past members. Great show - they opened with a long 'Yours Is No Disgrace'! IMHO, love all the stuff up to, and including 'Drama'. After that...not really....but still a great live band I'm sure. Not so bothered about RW's absence, but a shame they can't patch things up with JA. But as has been said, you still get Squire, etc. - all great musicians to go and see, with a superb set of songs. 'Yes Album' and 'GFTO' - can't argue with that.
11. Ralphe Armstrong when he was in the Mahavishnu Orchestra - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtckEWfy2vE He is also prominent on 'Visions Of The Emerald Beyond' and 'Inner Worlds'. All three super albums. Ralphe has said it was one of the reasons he got the job - no-one was really playing fretless P!
12. DM also played on two of Carlos' finest solo albums - 'Oneness', and the the electric bass parts on 'The Swing Of Delight'. Acoustic bass was from Ron Carter. For any who haven't heard these two - fantastic records - and once again, some seriously tasty playing from DM.
13. Great doc on BBC4 last Friday about MG - probably still on the iPlayer. I love MG - Damon is spot on - you don't see acts like that any more. Other week I watched 'Soul Power', the film about Zaire '74 - the Ali fight and music festival around it. Loads of James Brown (whom I also adore) and the whole thing is sooooo recommended! Owwwww-eeeeeee!!
14.
Marathon was a superb album. "Aquamarine" being my favourite track.
Definitely the last decent album they made IMHO....then it went downhill fast! Unstoppable until then, though. And Carlos always filled the bass slot with some seriously tasty players.
15. I've just been digging - it turns out he now works in (as they call it in the US) real estate. Still playing a bit with the same white P-bass. Except he's currently in prison for mortgage fraud!
16. At least it stops them touring the same songs for the next 10 years....or maybe not! Must admit, I've never really 'got' The Pixies.....highly influential, but the record themselves always leave me a bit cold....sorry fans!
17. Here's a great solo with something for everyone - amazing stuff, even if he does resemble a porn star! It's an extended version of the track from 'Marathon', for those of us who have heard it before. TBH it's about the time I lose interest in the band ('79/'80), but what a great player. Always loved his stuff on the late '70s albums...great all-rounder. Enjoy!
18. I'll play - Like most of us - list only current for today, as it will have changed by 6pm tonight! Geddy Lee (Rush) Lemmy (Motorhead) Chris Squire (Yes) Jaco Pastorius (need to ask....!) Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr.) JJ Burnel (The Stranglers) Ralphe Armstrong (Mahavishu Orchestra) Michael Henderson (Miles Davis) I'd probably add a couple of players - say, Willie Weeks and Chuck Rainey to finish off. Guys that have played on soooo many records that we all love, we've all been influenced in some way. Plus I'd love to have their bass CV's!
19. I've never taken a backup bass anywhere. Now I can't, as I've only got one anyway!
20. The reasons that my last originals band fell apart - we had the songs, but lack of direction and push ended it for me. Drummer and myself were pushing, but the 'main' man, who's band it was (and exercised creative control over the songs, but never my bass parts), just sat back and talked about it! Current covers/originals project is better, but I know how find it is to get like-minded individuals. If you find any, let me know!
21. I've owned a good few Rics down the line, and my sole bass, and Ric, is one of George's ex's! I've had new and vintage, and this one is certainly 'the one'. Just gives an indication that George really knows his Rics - you'll be getting a cracker.
22. Why is it every time I get a good spot at a standing gig, the re-incarnation of this man shuffles through the crowd, only to stake his spot right in front of me? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Pershing_Wadlow
23. I thought he'd had the all-clear a while back? That's terrible news.
24.
Mrs 2611 and I went to see Gary Numan at the Forum a few years ago just before he went on stage 2 German fellas rolled up, both 6ft 4 plus who the proceeded to kiss each other and fondle each others bottoms throughout the show.....not the best Numan gig we have been to
Numanoids, eh?
25. I've never associated Lemmy with Jetglo - he was a Mapleglo man for years before the 4004LK's. I'm sure this post will be followed by a flurry of pictures showing Lem with a JG - but I've never seen one! You do see him playing a Fireglo in Lemmy - The Movie....looks quite strange!
