Look what I found! Heart of The Sunrise isolated bass
spongebob replied to Cosmo Valdemar's topic in General Discussion
Haha, that would have been me. EDIT: to say I noticed your lines & your 4003 sounded great!
Hi Jon! Many thanks! I did wonder if you were a member here as I've seen your avatar before with your FG. Nice to know I'm not the only Ric-fan in this part of the world...... BTW - I did comment to our guitarist when I came in about your sound - total JJB - good man! -
Look what I found! Heart of The Sunrise isolated bass
spongebob replied to Cosmo Valdemar's topic in General Discussion
Good call. I was warming up for a gig on Sunday - ran through a few of my own lines, and then played the main riff from 'Tempus Fugit'. Unbelievably, a fellow bassist from the previous band (very nice chap) came across, and recognised the line instantly! First time I've jammed a Yes bassline, and had it noticed! Nobody noticed my own lines though, probably as the last bands' records sold about 3 copies....... -

I think Jaco strikes a chord - for me - is that there's so much going on, but I still find soul in his playing. His playing on the 'Night Passage' album I really do like (then again, I like all of it TBH!) - not flash for flash's sake (like a bass Eddie Van Halen or something) but a classy player with groove, soul, and above all, passion. Jaco and his bass were 'at one' in my opinion.

Happy days 4003 limited edition back with me!!!!

Nice one George! Can't believe you let that gorgeous 4004cii go, though..... -
...another here who thought it was Blue Oyster Cult! Surely there's only one real BOC?

I really like the 'Trio Of Doom' stuff - even that Havana take of 'The Dark Prince'! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcMKWGTBGRM ....and here's the John Mclaughlin original - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kh80RM4YfT8

I was in two, but left one a couple of months back - so down to one now. We do gig regularly, so it does it all for me. The other band was creatively interesting, but lack of work, and the fact we never seemed to get together much did it for me. I find it easier to focus one one for now - may change again in the future, but I've been going through of a bit of a 'miffed' phase with the whole thing of late - so the one band is what I can enjoy, and just sit back for a bit! It was the politics of the other band which made it all worse!

First time for me was this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vbPEFb4OVg It was in the last 10 years, though. Love Jaco now, but came to him via my love of Joni!
So outside of the bass-nerd world, frankly nobody knows or gives a toss whether you play a P or a custom 9-string. So long as the track is 'good'... and if your guitar is a nice colour, all the better!
+1! TBH I've primarily used Rics all of my band/gigging life, in a variety of styles and genre. I think as long as you are comfy and confident with your bass of choice, that's enough! I like to think I have my kind of tone, and if that wasn't right or acceptable, then I wouldn't be the right player for the gig.

AAARRGH - Just had the worst audition in my life!
spongebob replied to thunderbird13's topic in General Discussion
I'd have walked out in an instant! Good on you for sticking with it. I try to follow some advice given to me by a fellow bassist some years back. Always remember - you are auditioning them, not the other way around. The longer I play, the more sense it makes! -

I'll never understand why so many people find Rics uncomfortable...always felt very easy to play for me. Maybe more need to play a contoured 4004 - same big Ric tone, but no pup cover or sharp edges!
-
4004's are simply awesome basses - and from the comments here, obviously appeal to 'non-Ric' people as well. The tone is amazing - like a 4003 on steroids! Gorgeous MG BTW....

why do so many bass players drive a Ford Focus?
spongebob replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
Good point, some twat ran a key down all the cars outside the jam I went to on Friday, ours included, road worn! If I catch the w***er that did it his face will match!
I feel for you. About 2 years ago, I had a brand new Mini Cooper D. Lovely car, and went like a rocket. Had it around 3 months - went out one morning to go to work, and found some little **** had keyed the bonnet, wings, and door mirrors. It was black - and for a reason unknown to this day, they did the same to all the black cars down this road. Mine was in the drive, they even opened the gate to let themselves in. I did get it repaired - but the weirdest thing was a really loud interior noise that started pretty much the same day as the damage was found. It ended up back with the dealers about 8 times, and they still couldn't find the problem or fix it. Eventually, I was so frustrated with the whole saga, I P/X'd it for my used Hyundai, losing a fair bit in the process. Put me off new cars - not that I could afford one now anyway! I'll never know if the vandals did something else, or if the problems just coincided. Even thinking about it now makes me livid - how people can damage property and walk away. I need a lie down....
I also remember R Kelly stealing the show a couple of years back , and I think he is just about the most interesting songwriter and performer in the whole Soul/ R&B genre at the moment .
Totally! I once read RK described as this generations Marvin Gaye, and I really believe that as well. Will be buying the MP3's of CB's albums tomorrow....very impressed.

Don't know if anyone caught this on Friday's 'Later'? CB totally blew me away - what a performer, and what great songs. I'll admit they are quite 'retro' in their style, but seeing as CB is of a certain vintage, he's got conviction. Compared to the rest of the show, he was showing it how it's supposed to be done - bit like R. Kelly a couple of years back...awesome!
Awful tone, Jacos. But suitable to his needs. Rush are my favourite band but I can't stand Geddy's tone on most of the albums.
Ditto Lemmy - I love Motorhead, but I'm not a big fan of his bass tone since the early '90s!

Sound advice, Miles!
-
Thanks for the advice guys! I think you've talked me around - just keep what I've got and worry less! I think it's just the demise of the band kind of got me thinking - and it sounds like we've all been through similar. What with the other band chugging around the pubs, I'll admit I could do with a new challenge. Also spot on about regretting it later, and costing more cash.....so yes, good call. Good message there - worry less and just play - and don't let me disfranchisement with bands get in the way. May even stick a pic 'on the settee' over the weekend to seal the deal - never even seen that thread before!

Good point Martyn....and great input from all generally on the thread. I think it's just having a moment of being a bit miffed with bands and stuff, swapping one bunch of you-know-what's for another...just trying to work out where I'm going. I think you reach a point where you realise that musically, where you are and where you kind of finished up....for now at least. Really loving the '04 Martyn...make me think if its all I need at the mo. Just always bought gear to use and play live - and it just feels like I'm off that at the moment. One band, some gigs....and right now even that seems a little hard going.....
-
Sounds like it I must admit! I think with the demise of the band, which I put lot into, it's a bit like all I can see me ever doing is the pub/covers circuit....and TBH it's a bit depressing, what with gigs getting harder to get, and most venues being half-full! I almost feel like I want to just get something else going on - music has always been, and is my life. Without it there's nothing going on - and so it's a little daunting when I started to look at it - and if that's all there is....
-
Quite an odd one this. I own two bass - both quality pieces of kit - both I love and play wonderfully. However, as of recent times, I now only play in one band, just covers 'round the pubs and odd function since the originals band fragmented. I keep pondering if I should sell one of the basses - I just feel a bit guilty having two, when it's not like we're gigging every night or even every week! The cash would come in handy elsewhere, but it's not a desperate situation or anything. Maybe it's just a funny time, but if this band split right now, I think I'd have a gap anyway, as I'm a little jaded with the whole thing anyway as we all get from time to time, especially with the disintegration of the originals project. Don't get me wrong, I'd never stop playing, but it's just a thought to play one bass to bits. Could be an age thing - I was 39 this month, and years and years more of dragging around the pubs is kind of losing it's appeal - especially after a couple of recent, 'through the motions' gigs is dives..... Please tell me we've all be through this temptation to start flogging, and just own TBH, what I need?
