1. P-bass thread? Must be an excuse to post one of the best P-bass tones..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfwy0BRBc5g
2. I've only had good experiences with Fenders TBH. Much more than I can say about most of the RIcs I've owned (and then sold......!)
3. Good, enjoyable shows. Kind of thing I watch and think '.....no!!' Some good choices, though. Nice to see 'The Hissing Of Summer Lawns' in there.....but they should have gone for a Jaco one!
4. Downloaded 'School Days' today - bargain price of £2.99 from Amazon! Will give it a listen this evening, and see how we go. Great response from all, many thanks to those who participated.
5. Great stuff so far! Are his '70s recordings pretty much what to go for (on the basis of response at the mo?)
6. Looking at actually buying some Stanley Clarke! Used to have a cheap compo some years back, but never got around to buying any more of his stuff. Anybody got any thoughts where to start on his massive back catalogue? His name doesn't seem to pop up as often as others on BC....so please help me start my Stanley journey!
7. Recently, I've been using 'Tempus Fugit' by Yes.....simply because I really like it!
8. Really sorry to hear that George - hope there's some light at the end of the tunnel for you. On a brighter note, that's a great price for a lovely limited 4003! Can fully vouch for George as a 100% great seller. My 4003 used to be his, and it's one of the best I've owned!
9. I've owned a few in the range, and as such would vote for the good old American Standard. Granted, I've never had the pleasure of the Custom Shop, etc, but I reckon as a go anywhere, do anything workhorse of a bass, I not bettered my US P yet. The more I play it, I think it's the ultimate, original and best. And I've had 2. By mistake. Should have kept the first one......
10. I agree - modern bass sounds leave me cold. A background 'thump' with no definition is not bass. Melody, and adding to the song is! I did some recording recently, and TBH, was unhappy with the results. After much pushing, the bass was more defined in the mix than at first, but was still nowhere enough for me. I didn't want it out front, but clear enough to hear the lines, not just a deep thud - it's what it sounds like to me, anyway!
11. I have been there once, and my experience was overall, very good. I appreciated the 'there's the bass and an amp' thing - I could have played for hours if so inclined! Once I agreed the sale, it was nicely adjusted to my liking - I then left it with them whilst I went sight-seeing, and picked it up later on to take it home on the train! I can see what some of the posts mean - but I found the relaxed atmosphere a pleasant change from the usual hard sell.....and their stock is awesome!
12. I've not heard anything 'new' that's really excited me for ages. Pointless re-treads don't interest me! Last week I bought 'Live Evil' from Miles Davis - recorded in 1970, and 100000 times fresher and more exciting that anything I've heard this decade!
13. Seeing some stuff recently about Jaco's 'Bass Of Doom' kind of got me thinking. I wonder how many BC'ers are similar in owning and playing a 'main' bass - becoming really 'at one' with their instrument, and almost 'signature' sound. One you play masses more than any others? Or do you just like to spread the love among your collection? I know quite a few 'name' players are fairly synonymous with their bass of choice, always seen with same instrument. Maybe it's something I kind of strive towards, just trying to nail a tone without constantly changing basses, and all amp settings to compensate!
14. When I do a bit of jamming at home..... 'Sexy Eyes' by Dr. Hook (I really love this..!) 'Love Me Like A Lover' by Tina Charles 'Summer Nights' from Grease! With the benefit of Grooveshark/Youtube, anything goes!
15.
Maybe the band he's in now just doesn't suit the Ric? The next one might.
By all accounts, he's not played it in years! I did suggest that if he wanted to part with it.......but apparently, that's never going to happen!
16. To gigs, I always carry all my leads, etc. in my bass hard case. However, I put my newish Mono strap on the P-bass, and with everything else already in the case, it won't shut! Now I never take off my straps normally - but it looks like I'll have to, and also get a box to carry it all in! Am I in the minority here? Or should I have got a decent leads box years ago.....and take off the strap every time I put it in the case (a right pain!)?
17. I know someone who's bands' bassist always gigs with, and is never separated from his trusty Fender. It turns out he also owns a gorgeous Ric 4003 in a now defunct colour! However, he never plays it, ever. But he won't part with it! For me, anything I have/own that I never use doesn't really justify keeping. Anybody else got gear that they never use but won't ever sell? Or I am I just very unsentimental?
18. Sunn Mustang P-copy....my first bass, and it weighed about 3 tonnes! Funny about the 'Axe' basses mentioned early on - my first gig (I was drumming) in about 1988, our bassist used one. I do have a video of this most horrendous performance. It was so good, he had given up playing by about Spring '89!!
19. In my experience, when bands stop communicating, it's normally a sign of things coming to an end! A guitarist I know always rages about people not responding to texts, etc....and then I text him, and don't hear back! TBH, I'm one of those that always replies quickly - just think it's the right thing to do. How long does it take?
20. Fantastic! So true!! Thanks for posting!
21. Lovely bass, Ms. Undead! Last US Precision I sold, I had bought another within weeks as I missed it so much.......!
22. I'm starting to see why Peter Hook started Freebass...... ......until they all fell out.....
23. Been listening to some Joni Mitchell, in particular the 'Miles Of Aisles' live album. I knew she was backed by the red-hot LA Express, but to my shame didn't know the pedigree of bassist Max Bennett. Checked out his webpage - his discography is more a case of trying to work out who he hasn't played alongside! http://www.maxbennet...php/discography He'll be 85 (!) this year, and still going strong!
24. +1 on much of the above. Soundslive, GuitarGuitar, Bass Direct, Thomann - all very good customer service. Saw a mention of Absolute Music - bought from them about 5 years ago, and they were excellent. Even asked me how I wanted the bass set-up - restrung as well, played like a dream!
25. All his available recording are just timeless - 'Extensions Of A Man' I am particularly fond of. Real soul.
