RICKENBACKER 4004 cheyenne II 2013 mapleglo **BASS NOW TRADED**
Awful tone, Jacos. But suitable to his needs. Rush are my favourite band but I can't stand Geddy's tone on most of the albums.
Ditto Lemmy - I love Motorhead, but I'm not a big fan of his bass tone since the early '90s!

Sound advice, Miles!

Thanks for the advice guys! I think you've talked me around - just keep what I've got and worry less! I think it's just the demise of the band kind of got me thinking - and it sounds like we've all been through similar. What with the other band chugging around the pubs, I'll admit I could do with a new challenge. Also spot on about regretting it later, and costing more cash.....so yes, good call. Good message there - worry less and just play - and don't let me disfranchisement with bands get in the way. May even stick a pic 'on the settee' over the weekend to seal the deal - never even seen that thread before!

Good point Martyn....and great input from all generally on the thread. I think it's just having a moment of being a bit miffed with bands and stuff, swapping one bunch of you-know-what's for another...just trying to work out where I'm going. I think you reach a point where you realise that musically, where you are and where you kind of finished up....for now at least. Really loving the '04 Martyn...make me think if its all I need at the mo. Just always bought gear to use and play live - and it just feels like I'm off that at the moment. One band, some gigs....and right now even that seems a little hard going.....
-
Sounds like it I must admit! I think with the demise of the band, which I put lot into, it's a bit like all I can see me ever doing is the pub/covers circuit....and TBH it's a bit depressing, what with gigs getting harder to get, and most venues being half-full! I almost feel like I want to just get something else going on - music has always been, and is my life. Without it there's nothing going on - and so it's a little daunting when I started to look at it - and if that's all there is....

Quite an odd one this. I own two bass - both quality pieces of kit - both I love and play wonderfully. However, as of recent times, I now only play in one band, just covers 'round the pubs and odd function since the originals band fragmented. I keep pondering if I should sell one of the basses - I just feel a bit guilty having two, when it's not like we're gigging every night or even every week! The cash would come in handy elsewhere, but it's not a desperate situation or anything. Maybe it's just a funny time, but if this band split right now, I think I'd have a gap anyway, as I'm a little jaded with the whole thing anyway as we all get from time to time, especially with the disintegration of the originals project. Don't get me wrong, I'd never stop playing, but it's just a thought to play one bass to bits. Could be an age thing - I was 39 this month, and years and years more of dragging around the pubs is kind of losing it's appeal - especially after a couple of recent, 'through the motions' gigs is dives..... Please tell me we've all be through this temptation to start flogging, and just own TBH, what I need?

Radio 2 Top 100 albums - your verdict please!
spongebob replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
OMG, what an absolutely disgraceful abomination! TBH, I do only own 4 - 'What's Going On', 'Tapestry' 'Can't Buy A Thrill' and 'C'est Chic'. The rest just is the same old, same old. Almost a list for those who obviously don't like music! I think some stuff makes lists regularly because if people are told that certain records are classics enough times, it become sacrilegious not to fall along with it. It's almost a list compiled of other 'best of's' lists....every artist's 'masterpiece'. Saying that, James Blunt? Whitney? Maroon 5??? Didn't know they'd made a masterpiece! Those of us in covers bands....these voters are your average audience....... -
Funky,Soul, songs for three piece
spongebob replied to Bonin-in-the boneyard's topic in General Discussion
Our R'n'B trio has recently been cooking up 'Nutbush City Limits' - works pretty well when you stick a strong, forceful bassline down. -
I've had new and vintage (70's) Rics. I think book price for a '79 at 2k is a little adventurous - prices seem to be £1000-£1300 at the moment. Obviously a little more for really clean examples. You can often grab a 4001 for less than a new 4003....but that's a whole other can of worms! Great source of info on this kind of stuff is Joey's bass notes - http://www.joeysbassnotes.com/Rick_maint.htm As for a 'golden era', in Ric terms you'd be looking at a (around) '73 and before - toaster pickup, checkerboard binding, etc. Prices on these are considerably higher than a 'standard' 4001.

Only a fool breaks the two bass rule..... Isn't that in the bass players' Highway code or something??

Great suggestions, many thanks guys.

I used to have a Myspace music page - great for applying to bands and the like with lots of soundclips. pics, etc. Easy to update, and great to use. Myspace went right down with the upgrade....so I started a Reverbnation page. Always found it a bit of a nightmare - went on today, it's changed again, and I couldn't alter certain parts of the profile. Page now deleted....! Does anyone know of an alternative? Just a site (not Facebook/social networking) where I can literally put up some songs, pictures, etc, a site that I can forward to bands if anything comes up I want to apply for?

My favorite is undoubtedly 'Truly Blessed', the autobiography of the late, great, Teddy Pendergrass. What a man. He went through hell, and the book is so humbling. I challenge anyone not to shed a tear whilst reading it, and not to in some way re-evaluate their life once finishing.

Just downloaded the Headhunters/Thrust twofer from Amazon - only £7.12! Looking forward to getting into this one...

You've got a Ric and asking this question? Got to be the Ric by a long way - not only will you sound the best, you'll look the coolest!

I used to have the 'Headhunters' album - will have to get it again! I've done a bit of reading up, and it seems the same line-up made a few more records than just the iconic one I had - 'Thrust', 'Man Child' and 'Flood'. Any love for these before I dive in? Only other Herbie I have is 'Sunlight' and 'Mr. Hands', both very good indeed - purchased because of the Jaco connection!

I'm a big Ric fan, and TBH, I don't see the problem! (Goes and hides in the bushes.......)

I'm going to the O2. It'll be my first Rush gig, although I've been a fan since the 80's! Always swore I'd never pay high prices or go to an arena....but I have to admit it's that or nothing. I personally love CW, and having seen the setlists from the tour, it looks awesome. A night of Rush. I can't wait!

Sometimes I think it would be easier to be a bedroom bassist, and avoid band politics!

Sad news, and a great drummer.
