1. When I used to drum for a 3-piece, the bassist would always tell me that he would never play alongside keys because of the drowning out of the bass. His thing was 'if you've got a keys player, you don't want a bassist'! TBH, it's something that I now always stick to.....playing with one certainly made it tricky to find my space....
2. +1 on most of the above! I must admit, it's only the last 18 months or so I decided to become a bit more, shall we say, single minded in my approach. Since then, if it doesn't work for me, and is beyond sensible resolution, then you're better off out. I'd rather play on my own in a dark room than put up with some of the rubbish I used to! So far, it works fine. If nothing else, it sends out a signal that you take things seriously and won't be mucked around. Hopefully find like minded people. I've actually ended up in two bands because of it. Should have changed my attitude years ago!!
3. High jinks.........! Is that a Weather Report track in the background? Sounds awesome!
4. Really enjoying the replies to my original question - loads to look into! Keep 'em coming......
5. Great stuff, thanks....will check it out. BTW, are the Wiki rumours true about him living on the streets around the time he died? Did he give up playing?
6. Pulled the trigger - got it the other day! It's my first US standard Jazz, bought on the strength of my US standard P-bass. The colour in the flesh is excellent - I wasn't sure how it would look - but the CF/RW combo is stunning, and everyone I shown it to really goes for it too! What can I say? Looks amazing, plays and sounds fab! If I'd had know how much better the US basses were, I wouldn't have spent time and money with the other ones. BTW, Thomann's price has since risen a little....so get in quick if you want one at about 2007 prices!
7. I bought my P-bass used (TBH like new!) from BD - had a lovely chat with Mark beforehand. Really knows his stuff - a pleasure to deal with. Next time I need amps/cabs, I'll certainly take a trip to BD.
8.
also check out Little Beaver's "I can dig it baby"
Got that track, love it.....didn't know it was Jaco! Was he on any of the other Little Beaver songs?
9. I've always thought as the Foo's as a band which you quite like.....I just never really get excited about what they do. Some great - amazing - tracks, obviously a good solid live act, but for me they've always just lacked that special something. Maybe it's just me!
10. I've recently been getting really into Jaco's playing. Had a bit of the Joni stuff for a while, but have started seriously appreciating the Weather Report, solo, etc.. To my shame I don't really know too much about him past the drugs/mental disorder/violent death, and that he could be a little full of himself! Then again, if I was that good...!! The Wiki page is quite extensive, but I don't know how accurate that is. It mentions that he lived on the streets, and was at the time of his death. I watched his video on Youtube yesterday (Modern Electric Bass) released, I believe, in '85. His playing is just amazing....was his downfall that quick? I'd just love to know more about the man - what happened? Other than the obvious Joni, WR, etc, what other recordings should I check out?
11. Being in the Weald of Kent, we had some of the Darling Buds Of May filmed not far away. And of course, near to where I work we have Dungeness, home of loads of films and videos. A couple of years ago, there was a BBC 3/4 programme, 'The Incredibiles', in which one of my colleagues appeared on a weekly basis giving the, ahem, 'Incredibles' their latest stunt. All filmed in Dungeness!
12.
last bump before i put this on a well-known auction site tomorrow
Be careful how you list - I noticed my old one that I sold in January was resisted by the new owner on E-bay - failed to sell on Saturday with no bids at £510....and they're worth more than that for sure!
13. I love that era of Miles, much more than the 'Kind Of Blue' era. His late '60s/70's were amazing times for his records. I just love the music so much, that's a band I would have loved to have been in.....if I was a better player!
14. I've done some digging, and CF with RW can be found, brand new (2011 stock), £825!!
15. Hmmmm.....not much love for CF....that's why they're still there!
16. Looking quite seriously at the pre-2012 Fender Jazz's as they are quite a steal at the mo for a US standard. One colour which seems to be around a lot for sale is Charcoal Frost Never seen it in the flesh.....it it just because they're not that nice, that's why the surplus? Love to hear from/see CF pics......maple or rosewood....any pref? Or just go for a black one instead????
17. Lucky was a superb bassist - and Curtis is a total hero of mine as well. So underrated....real soul.
18. Hoping to pull a bit of BC help on this one - our band, Cubik Zicoma, is hoping to play the Shakedown Festival in Brighton - out of the 200 top bands, 5 go through. We were at number 12....so please vote and help us on our way! Can be done through Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/CubikZicoma Or adding as a favorite through Soundcloud - here's the track - http://soundcloud.co...coma/pippa-luke Thanks!
19. Used Fender's should be down a bit, what with the 2011 models going for £850-£899 brand new at the moment - seriously tempting, as I'm sure they'll go up soon, or go from stock....with new ones over £1000......
20. Back to the J vs. P! I'd love to try another Jazz....but have always found in the past that they just can't cut through the way the P does, and the bottom end just isn't there. Tried all EQ'ing, but just never found a good way in the mix. Perhaps I should try a US Standard....maybe just not found 'the right' Jazz. Only used Mex and Ged's before.....
21.
Dave Holland on a P with Miles.
Good call!
