  1. Well, I didn't want make that post, but you're 100% spot on.
  2. I mean, that was literally the next sentence of my comment that you quoted, yes 😄
  3. Yeah, a bit of a disappointing update after the long wait, but I'm not going to complain about the effort. The fact that Line6 are still pumping out updates for a product line that's almost a decade old, still keeping it highly relevant, is incredible. Other comparable companies simply don't do this; they want to ship new products and abandon their old ones as fast as they can. All that being said, I'm definitely trying out the EVH models for my guitar patches.
  4. Keeping the thread alive with a live shot from last year. Always great when the gig photographer focuses on the bass
  5. Since I'm new to the thread, here's my rig these days. No amp, although I'll use one if it's provided, because stage volume is always fun (I have a split to an FX send before any amp/cab blocks in the Helix). Two gigbags and I'm all set, no more fridges to load and unload, and that includes my wireless setup, in-ear rig, spare DI, and any backups and tools I might need. Undressed: Dressed:
  6. Doing a firmware update right before a gig is a risky strategy regardless, in my book. Might be. I've never had to redo any global settings, and I've been following all updates since about 2.40 now. But some of them have been on the HX Stomp, some on the HX Effects and some on the Helix Floor, since I've gone through phases of owning different units.
  7. When you start the update process, you're asked to make a backup and save it on your computer. After the update, you are asked to reload that backup, which should re-import all your old settings for you. Are you possibly skipping that step?
  8. Great sounding plugins, but it's so annoying that they're all completely separate. No way to mix & match drives, amps, delays, etc from different Neural plugins without setting up an increasingly complex chain of instances. I wish they had a universal loader pluging, where you could choose parts from all the Neural plugins you owned; I'm sure this would increase their sales and appeal drastically. I've got a couple of Neural plugins, but I inevitably fall back to Helix Native for all my DAW guitar modelling needs, because it has everything in one package.
  9. Tonocracy amp and effects modeler is now free! https://tonocracy.com/ It uses Atomic's amp modeling. I haven't tested Tonocracy, but I've owned Atomic hardware modelers, and they sound and feel great.
  10. New cover! One of the absolute top bass riffs in rock history, and I'll fight anyone who disagrees (disclaimer: I won't actually fight anyone)
  11. Much appreciated. Yeah, I'm really enjoying pretending to play synth bass; it makes for some interesting tones and challenges.
  12. Throught I'd just gather up all my bass covers and playthroughs in a single thread. I make these mostly for my own amusement, and to document where I'm at in terms of playing and ability. They might also serve as resources if I find myself wanting a gig and the band leader needs to see a sample of what I can do, who knows? Here's my channel link where all my videos get posted: https://www.youtube.com/@eskilseter I'll post new videos as they're uploaded, but here are some current highlights
  13. My Cherry Sunburst and Tobacco Sunburst axes. Love burst finishes
  14. Not free on their site as far as I can see. Is there a code or special URL? Edit: Found it: https://www.instagram.com/p/CyOZ0OfIRUF/
  15. Absolutely Stainless steel strings (DR Lo-Riders in my case) give me the high end zing I want. In addition, I keep my action fairly low and smack the crap out of my strings to get that real throaty attack. You can hear in the middle section from about 2:52 into the video how the aggressive attack completely goes away when I pick lightly. Cab IR is the Shiftline Mesa RR215 from their free bass IR pack. Best IR I've ever tried for my tones. Here's the Photon settings for my drive preset that you hear in the video. Drive set to full Alpha side, distortion mode 1, about 60% drive and blend. Most importantly: Mids are definitely your friend:
  16. I adore the massive, filthy, rhythmically mindbending groove that Jon Stockman (and Steve Judd) lay down in this track Using my Darkglass Alpha Omega Photon to cover the song that sold a million Alpha Omega pedals
  17. Well, scratch all that, I just found what I needed. The Jazz Organ in the Komplete Kontrol freebie pack does what I want, and sounds cool too.
  18. Yeah, tried them both, none of them support a sustain pedal. That's why I'm asking for specific experiences; I really don't want to hunt down every single organ VST to see if I can use a sustain pedal with it. I'll happily use an organ that's part of a bigger keyboards package too; it doesn't have to be a dedicated organ VST. Too bad there's not a B3-ish organ in the LABS collection
  19. Anyone know of a free or inexpensive B3-ish organ VST that supports a sustain pedal? I play a bit of synths and organ with my band, but I need to be able to sustain a chord when transitioning from keys to bass. WIth all my synth tones, I do this by pressing the sustain pedal while I move my hands to the bass and turn the volume knob to get ready for the bass section, but none of the organ VSTs I've found support sustain pedals (or they just map the sustain pedal to the rotary speed).
  20. Dunlop all the way for me as well. The Schallers had a tendency to flip upside down on the strap, and although they still seemed to stay firmly attached I never quite trusted them. The locking mechanism was also a bit more fiddly. I prefer the Dunlop buttons that also double as regular strap buttons, since I don't use strap locks at home (usually), but the ones that sit flush with the instrument are definitely pretty appealing in terms of looks. Before I started using "real" strap locks I used those Dunlop plastic ones, and they worked really well. Really secure, cheap and easy to use.
  21. Probably not. Most bassists that go direct to FoH will not use cab simulation, but once you start adding distortion a lot of players prefer to have a cabinet somewhere in the chain. It's highly doubtful that the sound engineer would have added it for you, although he may have added some EQ and/or HPF/LPF to achieve some of that same filtering Distortion without cabinet simulation (or a real cab, of course) sounds really harsh, and to most ears pretty unpleasant, which is why cab simulation is becoming more and more common on direct signals now.
  22. My bass/synth board. Complete rundown posted here:
  23. Fender Engine Room LvL5 under the board. Two outputs combined to power the Stomp.
  24. I use an HX Stomp and Darkglass Photon. Through some creative routing using the FX loops, a splitter and a 5-way patch bay, this board is set up for a multitude of different scenarios, all of which can be active at the same time. I can run a synth and a bass through this at the same time, and send them to different outputs. I can also send my bass direct to the desk and to an amp at the same time. The desk gets a cab sim, the amp does not. I also have a dry output on the board, which send my unaffected bass signal straight through. The board has two main inputs: Wireless unit (for my bass), goes into a Y splitter (for the dry output) and then into the main input on the HX Stomp Synth input (through the patch bay), going into an FX return And it has six outputs: Dry out, for an unaffected bass signal Basically a clean DI, split off right after my wireless receiver Amp out, for a wet bass signal with no cab simulation Uses the right output of the Photon. The left output has cab sim applied and is sent back into the HX Stomp for use with the recording outputs (see 3 and 4) Recording out R, and: Recording out L. These are used for recording or personal monitoring. They output both bass and synth, fully wet (cab sim and all), in stereo (when applicable). I use these and my dry out for recording at home, allowing me to capture both a clean DI and a fully wet signal at the same time. I can also plug a personal monitor into these outputs (either IEM or a wedge) if I need to hear myself. Bass Direct out This is the Photon DI output, and it outputs a cab sim bass signal for going direct Synth direct out. This uses an FX send in the HX Stomp and gives me a direct output for the synth signal To achieve this madness, the Photon is in an FX loop of the HX Stomp. The synth in&out is only active on certain select presets, where I've split off a dedicated synth effects path in the effects chain. In those presets, the bass is still processed separately and sent to its appropriate outputs, so that there's never a chance that the synth is sent through the dedicated bass outputs and vice versa. If I try to play the synth when any other preset is active, it will not be processed (which is essential). The last thing I want is to send the synth to my bass amp and/or to the bass channel in FoH just because I forgot to change presets before the song started. I'm extremely happy with the power that this setup gives me in an extremely compact package. My core bass tone is contained in the Photon, which frees up the HX Stomp to act entirely as a signal routing device and effects platform, either for my bass or my synth (or both at once). Don't have an updated picture, but here's a slightly older version. I no longer have the loop switcher on the board, and the MIDI controller is now up front, like this: I think that if I were to move on from here, it would be to move to a Quad Cortex, which will fit comfortably on the same pedalboard along with the wireless. I've been contemplating going for the Helix LT, which I know I can set up to give me the same options as my current board, but it's just so freaking massive. I just love the compact size of this setup, both for lugging to rehearsals and gigs, and for not taking up much floor space.
  25. Not that much of an outlier. Warwick and Spector are two other big brands that default to 16-16.5mm
