Hi there, Wondering if anyone was planning to attend this year's Music / Nature camp at Wooten Woods - or the Bass Camp? One of my friends went last year and thought it was awesome so I decided to treat myself this year. 5 days of music and fun in the woods with Mr. Wooten himself amongst other greats... Its over in Nashville which is a bit of a hike - but I reckon it's worth it... Anyone coming along? Stevo.

This is just perfect.... need one! -
Why thank you!

I think it is the angle of the pic - I just took a look at it and it's all straight and true. It's a lovely bass and has a great tone - perhaps dots make it interesting.. :-)
-
Okay - case closed. I leave it as it left the factory (aside from the pups and bridge) - and begin my search for a birth-year jazz ('73). :-)
-
Punk means not doing what you are told. It's about attitude. There aren't any reasons why you shouldn't play punk on fretless, or cello or bloomin nose flute, or tuba. If you are feelin punk - then punk it what you will make. The sound is in your hands, the instrument is simply there to amplify it.
-
Okay I just realised something - apologies if this sounds silly; but looking at some pics of 73's and 77's - does the binding on the neck always match the blocks? I.e. white binding with white blocks? My neck has white binding so I am thinking black blocks would also be 'wrong' in another way?
-
Well I was considering black blocks with a white pickguard - but that seems more in line with a '73... The 78's seem to be white blocks with black pickguard. Then again - it left the factory with dots. Argh.
-
Good - so we are all agreed then. Blocks it is! Now - I was thinking black blocks; but after seeing pearl blocks on a '77 recently I am more thinking pearl...hmmm...
-
Definitely not stickers... that is cheap - so is the idea of putting a 'new' neck on it.. I think that would also change the sound and the feel.. dots just don't look right for me - and as it's a '78 neck; it should have blocks anyways. So in theory I am making it correct. :-)
-
I can recommend Joe White - he has worked on a few of my basses - and recently fitted new block inlays to an old bass of mine. Fine luthier indeed and an all-round lovely chap!
-
I guess buying another neck is an option... what sort of price for a '70's fender jazz neck?
-
So - I have a '78 Fender Jazz, well, it's a '78 neck on an 83 body and an 83 fingerboard (I think) - with Nordy pickups and a Schaller bridge; so already a bit all over the place - but what would make it 'perfect' I think would be block inlays. I know a luthier local to me who already did a great job putting new inlays into an old Ibanez that I had, so thinking to trust him with the Fender. I didn't pay big $$ for the Fender but wondering if it would increase, decrease or destroy the value of it... What do you all think? Keep it original(ish) or continue the journey it has had, and make it personal...

Jakesbass, Jakesbass And Thrice Jakesbass
OutSpoon replied to jakenewmanbass's topic in Tutors Available
Just had my first lesson with Jake yesterday - and it was really valuable. I have been playing for around 25 years but felt that my progress has 'plateaued' a little after playing in the same 'wedding band' for 10 years. We had a good chat and a cup of tea and a good discussion about my history and my ambition. We worked through a few exercises, played a few tunes and talked theory; finishing off with some sight reading from the dreaded 'The Evolving Bassist' (which had been sat on my bookshelf for the past 15 years but it turns out is a treasure trove!). Now - need to put some hours in and work on the things I have been shown; and looking forward to the next instalment. Jake has promised I will be soloing just as good as he does (and he is damn good) with just another 10,000 hours practice... :-) Oh - and it was funny to see that he is using almost the same bass as I have (I have a 78 jazz, natural finish / black pickguard with Nordy pickups, he has a '77 natural finish / black pickguard with Seymour Duncans!). -
I was considering selling one or 2 of the ones I have or trading up - but I don't know whether I can part with any of them anymore.. they all mean something to me and have served a purpose over the years.... and I have named them all - which gives me an emotional reason for not getting rid of my babies! :-)
-
Welcome Andy - don't worry about being too old; you are NEVER too old! The Stones are well into their 60's - you are just a spring chicken in comparison! Nice 1st bass BTW! My 1st was a cr@ppy Westone Thunder...
-
Thanks! I have actually played quite a few Warwicks, but yet to find one that I really felt at home with. I wanted a Thumb for the longest time, but once I played one - it just wasn't me. I am attracted to the old Streamer that Zender used to play but never tried one... closest I got was a 2nd hand Rockbass 5 (horrid grey colour) that I played in some random shop in Birmingham - but the colour was wrong and the timing was wrong (just on my way back from a business meeting..) Do any shops in the UK stock Warwick any more?

Hello there fellows! As per tradition / convention I thought it would be a good idea to introduce myself formally... So Hi! I'm Steve, my friends call me Dr. Funkenstein... bass player for around 25 years. Started off with Iron Maiden / Slayer back in my long-hair days, progressed through Faith No More and Red Hot Chilli Peppers and these days more into the mellow side of music, but still a champion of the groove! Have plenty of basses (4's, 5's, fretlesses and an upright) but always on the lookout for one-more... currently have the yearnings for a Sandberg or possibly a Warwick. I run my own businesses, providing hosted communications for small businesses (www.kooljett.com) - PLUG! and spent my spare time noodling round in a couple of bands and looking after my 2 little boys! So - that's me. Hi! Steve.
They play it better... check out the slap solo in the Paul Simon live in Central Park recording... and then pick your jaw off the floor. Have a look on YouTube and see if it's there.
Wow - he really nailed that one. And with attitude as well. What a guy... :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqrKejQTynk...laynext_from=PL -
Plus have a look at the Ibanez ATK 305. Very nice bass for the money.
I bought a Yamaha bb615 and I think it's pretty good for the price. Punchy sound, solid b - strings are pretty far apart, much more than my Jazz 5. I love the retro '80's look of the bb bases so I use it as my main workhorse.
Wizard can advise on pot values, you just have to get them from somewhere. My original Squier pickups are actually the same size as the neck pickup on my JV four string (bridge is wider!!) and Andy managed to get something to work (his original set didn't have a wide enough pickup pattern). I would imagine Fender use wider pups. If Andy can get hold of the same size casing, then he should be able to make you a pup to fit.
Looking good. So - how do these products (Wizard ad Viller) compare with EMG / Bartolini / Seymour Duncan etc.? Am I being a brand-snob? Quality just as good (if not better?) cheaper and better made?
