I’ve quickly put together some sound samples, all finger style (apart from some dubious slapping at the end eek). The strings are pretty dead, but you get an idea of tones. Order is; Both pickups, preamp on, full volume, no bass boost or cut As above, but just bridge pickup As above, just bridge pickup Both pickups, bass boosted, then cut. Both pickups, treble boosted, then cut. Preamp off (volume pull) both pickups Preamp off, bridge pickup Preamp off, neck pickup. I think. Apologies for the sloppy playing, it was cold, I wasn’t warmed up, I haven’t practiced, the dog ate my talent etc. I’m going to slap some new strings on it tomorrow then record some slap, and some pick. 🙂

The tone is in your hands! 🙂 Some of the growl is going to come from how you attack the note (how hard) then how you attack the note (finger, thumb, pick, nail) then where you attack the note (neck, bridge, in between) then pickups (single, humbucker) pickup position, Active / passive then amp then eq... I think you can get pretty close the sound with any bass with soapbars, preferably active then with a bit of eq. In my opinion. 🙂

For sale, my PJB double 4 in white. Bought this at LBGS in 2016 as practice amp and it’s amazing. Small, lightweight and surprisingly loud. 70w and you can tell. Easily up for a rehearsal or small gig (without a loud drummer). I’ve just bought a new bass so need funds... Happy to ship UK or international, it’s small and light (buyer pays!). I’m close to Reading in the UK if you want to pop over and trial. You won’t be disappointed. Some blurb: Single-channel bass amp with an output of 70 W RMS, which even with its compact design offers powerful sound, so it not only fits the practice rooms, but also smaller stages. It is equipped with two speakers PJB Neopower Type C, which are internally strongly reinforced by an acoustic damping materials to prevent discoloration of the resulting sound. Combo features a 3-band EQ, controls Level Selector, Volume and Aux Level, instrument and aux input, headphones output and DC input.

For sales - my lovely Shuker 5-sting single-cut. I bought this from John in December last year, and he had just taken it back as a part exchange. It’s a beautiful bass to play, the neck join is exquisite. Pretty wide-range of sounds available from the Aaron Armstrong pickups. I’ve currently got it set as E-C but can put back to B-G if wanted. It’s great either way. Some more details below. Happy to ship local and international (buyer pays) and it’s got a lovely Shuker hard-case (made by HISCOX). I’ve just bought another bass (Ha!) so don’t really want trade. But would consider a sunburst p bass with some mojo.. Anything that looks like a scratch or a ding in the pictures is just a trick of the light - there’s none! I live near Reading in the UK if you want to pop round and have a slap. 🙂 34” scale 24 frets Maple / black veneer laminated set neck Palmwood Fingerboard Stainless steel medium frets Black walnut headstock scarf Laurel Burr headstock facings front and rear Brass nut Gotoh GB707 tuners Two way truss rod, carbon fibre reinforcement Laurel Burr curvetop and rear facing Black Walnut body Polyester basecoat Polyurethane wet look gloss top coat Schaller 2000 bridge Black Hardware Aaron Armstrong pickups. Blackout pre-amp with passive / active select (volume knob pull / push)

Totally understand.... I don't need the money - but I also don't need the bass. 🙂 Since I bought a Fodera Monarch - it's just not getting played and I would rather it was getting used rather than sitting in a case in my music room... I've got a P-bass and a 5-string J-bass.. I might sell them instead to make some headspace.

This is a really good point - what fits in the mix and what sounds good in isolation is completely different. You don't need as much bass as you think, you don't want as much treble as you think - your tone has to be quite narrow in order to fit between the guitars and drums (sometimes...). A lot of isolated bass parts sound rubbish. Loose, distorted, quite empty. Timmy C's parts on RATM sounds AMAZING on the record - and awful when isolated. I don't even know how he made a Stingray sound so bad! But when you hear the harshness blended with a crash cymbal and the bottom end propped up with a kick-drum it all suddenly makes sense!

Best rock bass sounds - shouldn't have included Wilton Felder and James Jamerson... they are brilliant lines, not sure they are great sounds - and they definitely not rock. Same with Paul Mcartney to some extent. And Tony Levin. Not rock. Billy Sheehan is a huge miss. His bass SOUND was a huge change. Lemmy - I'm no big fan of Motorhead - but what a SOUND Steve Harris - those clattery triplets on a precision bass... amazing SOUND. dUg Pinnck - love his SOUND. Phil Lynott - plectrums and p-basses... what's not to love. In my opinion. Love Rick Beato by the way.
