    While playing along to some nice drumming YouTube vids yesterday I accidentally started playing with just a compressor on. Sounded just how I wanted. I would even go as far as saying I would keep the compressor over the preamp. I can definitely see how a compressor adds sparkle but agree that at a gig even I probably wouldn't notice it. But playing on my own with headphones and recording it is awesome!

    I've just checked and the VT bass deluxe says the mid is custom tuned to 500hz. http://www.tech21nyc.com/t21manuals/CharacSeries-VT_DLX-OM.pdf So it has varied.

    I have a MIM jazz in a very similar blue, i think it was called midnight blue (bit more purple in a dim room). Mine's a 2000 though. Had it from new.

    There was a radio 4 program about 'pioneer new thumb surgery' not long ago. It was to do with arthritis and replacing the worn out joint. Don't know if that is what you would need but might be worth a listen. Good luck.
