I fancy a pickup change. Jazz type, passive humcancelling?
jonnybass replied to fretmeister's topic in Repairs and Technical
I have Nordstrand NJ4SE's in a jazz bass, when i bypass the east eq they sound lovely passive. No hum, nice sound Highly recommend. You haven't mentioned them but i have set of Lindy Fralin's Split P and hum cancelling J at the bridge in my PJ, they are fantastic. I wouldn't hesitate at either Lindy fralins or Nordstrands. Dont think you'll go far wrong with either of those. Jonny -
Not sure on the relevance here, you were talking about pitching a note on a fretless, not a where within a fret to place your finger on a fretted instrument. I would think where you land in between the frets will make a minimal difference to tone as the anchor point is the fret after your finger (closest to the bridge) to the bridge anchor point. Pitching a fretless is still the on the line closest to the bridge (on a lined fretless). Jonny

I dont think thats right on the dots point. Dots inbetween fretlines indicate where to put your finger for the string to then hit the fret behind the finger (closest to the bridge) to pitch the note. With no fret (but a lined fretless board) your finger should be on the fretline closest the bridge end of the fret to accurately pitch the note. As far as the OP goes, its your bass so its really down to you. Is it one of those passing whims we all get? are you likely to sell the bass at some point? I have had irreversible mods done to a fairly pricey bass, I dont regret it as I dont beleive I'll ever sell it. If you love everything about it, apart from the fact it has frets, take it to a luthier who is experienced and good at de frets and get it de fretted, or buy a bass that comes close and de fret that. I've been following this thread and contributing, I did not pick up on any negativity at all. Lots of healthy discussion around the topic and some connected bits too. If Limelight or the person who commissioned the bass think I have contributed to wishing anything other than the bass not being delivered to its rightful owner then I apologise as this was never my intention. surely as they seem fairly customisable, you could order one without the Fender logo? Jonny

Did a specific tone inspire you to play bass?
jonnybass replied to lancer's topic in General Discussion
Pino Palladino's stuff with Paul Young, loved that tone, wore out the C90 of that album. That was a gateway onto Mick Karn, then Geddy, then Doug wimbish. Jonny -
That’s outrageous, and can I think only be explained by it not being “regulated” insurance. sorry you had this experience. Jonny
-
Yeah i am the same, having worked in regulated financial services for a looooong time i know exactly what you mean. Jonny
-
Does this mean i am due you a massive fee?? Jonny
-
@Kev and @fretmeister interestingly after a bit of reading it appears that this is not regulated insurance, and so is to technically covered by FSMA in the same way house insurance etc is covered.....just goes to show. Probably why its referred to as protection and compensation.. jonny

I dont work in general insurance but I'd say thats apples and pears, an insurance policy that covers mulitple options with exclusions is different to a one off contract for a specific purpose. The point i made is that when the agent is presented with information on the item being transported, the exclusion shouldnt apply if they have accepted the insurance premium. Contracts are two way, if the insurer doesnt know whats in the box the exclusion can apply but i still fail to see how if the insurer knows whats being insured, that the item cannot be insured that they can accept the premium. that act in itself would fail to meet FCA principles surely? I think we are talking about two different things, i am talking about the employee and customer interacting, not the designed process. Im no lawyer, and havent worked in insurance litigation, but as i said, I believe that if its discussed and the agent takes the money I'd still say its insured, as otherwise the employee is taking money they are confirming cover of the insurance policy, but what your talking about is a process where that doesnt happen. The clicks wont work that way online and id imagine the scripts for the process prevents such an occurance. like you say "if they dont ask the questions properly" that could cause a problem. The tick in the T&C's is to show the firm hasnt hidden exclusions and the person knows, but if the agent acting for the insurer deviates from the T&C's, accepts money and confirms cover my understanding would be the FCA or ombudsman would view that as accepted to vary the insurers terms and conditions. As i said if you are discussing it with the employee and they know whats in the box, they cant take money for insuring it if its not insured. That is the whole basis of the years of PPI refunds of employees accepting insurance payments for situations they knew were not insured. But as i said i dont work in insurance litigation. Jonny
-
Sorry but I dont think this would stand up to challenge, if you tell the employee its a bass worth £1,000 they either accept the risk on behalf of the insurer and insure or refuse, a firm cannot knowingly sell insurance which is not applicable. This is what happened with PPI. I would be interested to see how this would stand up to the FCA or the relevant ombudsman. I think its more likely that the firm rely on not asking and agreeing and instead referring people to the T&C's. Jonny

bloody lovely bass too, hope it finds its way to the rightful owner. Jonny
-
If you are declaring whats in the package and they take the money, I would think its insured. My understanding would be if you said its a bass guitar worth £1,000 and they said its £20 for insurance for that, its insured, regardless of terms and conditions, as you have entered into a contract and exchanged money based on the information given. @eude and @skelf thats an absolutely stunning instrument. Love the approach from ACG to be as bespoke as possible for the player. You are a lucky man with that bass Eude. Jonny

Flipping basses for profit – fair game or not cool?
jonnybass replied to Allaboutthebass's topic in General Discussion
Its a tough one, if I sold a bass at around market value and for some reason the market changed and it was worth 10 times more and it was resold at the new price I'd curse my bad timing but not the other seller. If someone gave me a sob story and convinced me to sell under value then the next day had it on at market value id not be best pleased and be unlikely to deal with that person again. However, we've all dreamed of or managed to snap up that 59 les paul at a car boot for £10. if you did and sold it would you go looking for the seller to give them a share? or would you pocket it? Or if they had a 54 p bass for £20 would you offer them market value or buy it at the bargain price? Jonny -

I break my practice sessions into two types. Technical and playing. before I do either I warm up then I start on technical practice. technical practice I limit to 10 minutes. I pick one exercise, put the metronome on and play it. Once I play the exercise perfectly 3 times I increase the metronome tempo. I got it from a janek gwizdala series, and for me it’s so useful to improve my technique. playing practice is exactly as it sounds, playing songs, parts, noodling, jamming but just playing. There’s no time limit on this bit and it’s about fun and playing. this is how i (slowly) get better. jonny

Personally I bought my first double bass about 11 months ago after playing electric for 30 years. Loving it but I find it takes time and allot of practice to sound good. I don’t find it easy to switch between electric and upright yet. Used to have a NS Wav eub, didn’t sound like a double bass, or an electric, didn’t feel like one in terms of the physical part but it did have its own (good imo) sound and I could switch between them easily. jonny

For sale are 2 euphonic audio cxl 1x12 cabinets, complete with covers. Great cabs never skipped a beat for me. For those who don’t know, 1x12 cabs with tweeter, in their day very portable. Great sounding cabs. I’m downsizing and moving so it’s time to move them on. looking for £200 per cab & fitted cover. Postage at buyers expense, deals available if you want both cabs. no real trades in mind but try me out with interesting basses if you fancy. jonny
