  1. Watched this yesterday, really lovely little documentary. Jonny
  2. Beautiful bass, love a dotted bound neck. Shame my bank balance doesnt allow me to indulge. GLWTS Jonny
  3. Im really new to double bass. What are the advantages of a wooden end pin over a metal one? is it purely less damaging to floors/stages? Jonny
  4. Gorgeous
  5. Thank you Ead. Good luck with it brilliant piece of kit. Jonny
  6. I might be mis-remembering @EddieG but didn't he tell you in the summer he was about to glue the body. From the last update it looks like he's still not done that and it's almost 6 months later. Am I remembering correctly? Jonny
  7. They are different tools, to create something like whats goin on properly, you need to understand it, analyse it as @OliverBlackman is stating, maybe not to the level of transcribing and working out the harmonic relationship of the bassline/chords/melody, but well enough to at least mimic it. To just create something out of nothing, you might be able to sing it, then you might be able to just play it. The problem is there isnt one way of creating anything. Artists work differently even when they use the same medium, music is the same. If not we'd all be the same as Jaco/Jamerson/Cliff/Sir Paul/Nolly/Flea. Jonny
  8. For me, when working on a song, it should always be about "Does this make the song sound better?" if the answer is no, try again, if you arent sure ask your band mates or the songwriter. The bass, like any instrument is about enhancing a song sometimes thats supporting, sometimes its carrying the melody. This is generally genre specific, so you are unlikely to have a 3 minute bebop bass solo in a thrash metal tune, likewise, in a folk band you are unlikely to have distorted two handed tapping basslines. Jonny
  9. Depends. If its an in the house stand I use a Ruach stand like this: https://ruach-music.com/product/ruach-gs-2-original-wooden-bass-guitar-stand/ Spendy but with my ACG recurve (Offset body) on it, its more of a furniture feature. There are cheaper versions of this type too. If its a take to gig stand Hercules which many people have already mentioned. I have a Jazz, p bass and the ACG recurve all play nicely with both stands. Jonny
  10. Looks lovely JPJ, I started my double bass journey just a month ago and I am loving the challenge of playing. The sound they produce playing it is incredible i think. Enjoy! Jonny
  11. I’ve been watching those. Very useful, great resource
  12. Thanks Burns-bass, i did allot of reading and research before i jumped in. The biggest bits of advice were get a second hand bass from someone who plays and get at least one lesson to start you off. Happy Jack was able to supply both. I will probably look for more lessons but not had much luck getting responses so far. Cant wait to gig...may have one in the pipeline already...it took two days of telling people I had it Jonny
  13. I must say i was a bit scared of the dimensions until I actually saw and played it. Very pleased with it and Jack was an absolute legend in terms of spending time with me teaching me how to use it. Jonny
  14. It is a sizable but very playable thing indeed. I am absolutely loving the sound i can (almost) get from it. Jonny
  15. That was it, the final junkyard!! Thanks again Jack, I have been really enjoying starting this journey. Jonny
  16. So this year I hit the half century and although I have played electric bass for 36 years. I have never really played upright…my fiancé and I decided this year should be the time. So I made my way to the junkyard bought this beauty of a 4/4 Zeller from @Happy Jack as well as spending a delightful couple of hours hearing great stories and learning the first fledgling steps of upright bass playing. it’s been great so far, totally different instrument with its own feel and approach and I love it. So glad I’ve finally started this journey. jonny
  17. Bought a lovely upright bass from Happy jack. Spent a wonderful two hours talking basses, fridges, driving up and down the country and more basses. Jack patiently spent time teaching me how to look like a double bass player and how to play like one too. Great guy and a real asset to basschat. jonny
  18. Download, as in onto the app. But upload is it like a web browser type thing. jonny
  19. @hiram.k.hackenbacker How do i download charts onto onsong (free version)?
  20. Yeah I was wondering that, whats hybrid? I was expecting a PJ or something but they look like jazz basses in a different colour. Jonny
  21. The Status used to be mine, lovely bass good luck and happy travels with it @Skinner. I checked out that zon too. Always wanted a zon fretless but i'm trying to have less electric basses these days. Love a new bass thread. Jonny
  22. I've played Mustang Sally many times, in many bands, when its played IME people in the crowd dance sing and enjoy it. Cant recall playing it and having an empty dancefloor. Jonny
  23. TBH, totally agree. If someone equates mini skirt with prostitute or see through top with call girl it says more about them than the person wearing it. I've not seen footage of Blu in anything other than clothes a 20 something might want to go out in. Even if she did anyone can wear what they like to promote their image. Jonny
  24. I think any equipment that doesnt impact negatively on the performance is fine, this includes sheet music, lyric sheets, stands, ipads. I mean if you have a sketch of a couple of songs from a 40 min set and it doesnt affect the performance not an issue, in the same way someone bends down to fiddle with a distortion pedal delaying the start of a song, then adjusts it again delaying the next song would be a problem for me. Jonny
  25. I dont think she has been given a signature bass because she's beautiful, she's been given a signature bass because fender will sell them, its that simple. Like anyone in the music business shes using what shes got to create a career for herself so fair play. Young girls don't watch her stuff/stream her songs because they find her attractive (although maybe some do) its because they like it and maybe, just maybe they can now picture themselves doing it. Thats brilliant if you ask me. I've listened to a couple of clips, its not for me, so i wont listen to more. But at least the bass is a properly developed bass, not just a standard jazz in a different colour. Good luck to her, anyone inspired by her and if you buy the bass I hope it plays well for you. Jonny
