Band interaction has left me thinking whats the point....
jonnybass replied to jonnybass's topic in General Discussion
Sorry I've possibly put this across incorrectly. Guitarist was trying to organise rehearsals while telling us all there wasnt enough time to do enough. I asked why we were doing the gig. "exposure" was the answer, guitarist announces he's leaving the band after the gig so it will be his last. So I ask again why are we doing it we have no replacement, again Im told "exposure" I ask whats the value in exposure for a band with no guitarist, thats when the whole band are told we can move forward with a replacement bass player. -
Is BC a community, or just a source of information?
jonnybass replied to Rayman's topic in General Discussion
I see it more as a community, usually with valuable insight into music, life, gear etc with a fair amount of nonsense thrown in for amusement. -
So when discussing the fact we have a relatively short period of time to practice for a gig, and looking at available times for practices. I questioned why we were going ahead with the gig, tbh there isnt much in it for the band. The message I got was lets just get on with it theres not allot of time etc...eventually the message goes out, if we have to we will get a replacement bass player. So Im now left feeling utterly disposable. There's a shed load of reasons why this comment came out later, too much drama to go into, but do i just accept it as a one of those ill thought out comments or am i right to think "Whats the point of playing in this band?" I really don't know which way to go with it..so I thought I'd ask the hive mind Jonny

Parcelforce now off my christmas card list
jonnybass replied to Yan_Huriey's topic in General Discussion
Not really given this line of thinking is the whole remit for PPI claims. Selling you insurance you can’t use isn’t allowed. If you have packed the item appropriately, tell them what’s on the parcel and they then tell you to insure it, they have accepted the liability over and above the T&C’s. The hard part would be proving it was packed appropriately and the timing of you telling them what’s in the parcel before they recommend it. If they don’t recommend, then it’s on you. Bear on mind this is just my view though. It would also be FCA/FOS before small claims too. -
I think what’s also worth asking is does anyone find it a deal breaker? Is it a line they can’t cross, if they can’t can they share why not? this might help with your chat and reaching the right answer for your orchestra.

Parcelforce now off my christmas card list
jonnybass replied to Yan_Huriey's topic in General Discussion
Interesting this..if you tell them before you insure it that it’s an instrument and they recommend you insure it, I’d say theres a case the “sales agent” has accepted liability outside the product T&C’s. -
I think, it’s a personal decision. Bearing in mind you are becoming a censor. I always think to myself “is it appropriate?” Do you wanna be in my gang springs to mind here… “Is there a chance the artist can still benefit from the performance?” Will they get paid for what you do?? And in a band context “are we all comfortable?” this goes across the board to all content I think not just who performs it. MJ inparticular…is it all his material? Or are Jackson 5 numbers ok? A band I played in honestly had this discussion. It’s important to note, MJ was never found guilty of the things he was accused of. So you are choosing to effectively self regulate based on what? What is the evidence? A Netflix documentary? tough moral maze this. good luck…

i'd second the strings question, also marcus uses a badass bridge, different strings and bridge may help bring you closer to the tone you are after. BTW great playing and your tone is fab. I get that you are looking to be more Marcus but Majid's tone is good. Jonny

Started reading it, but found the style difficult and quite annoying. The quotes and philosophy behind it sound great though. Maybe it was me and it’s time to look it out and try again.

Yeah there would be power on the board.

So I was thinking of experimenting with volume pedals, I’d like two, and with the current financial climate I’d like to spend as little as possible. saw the leadfoot one and a joyo volume and wah which could be interesting. Does anyone have any views or recommendations? jonny

It’s a trace Blx 150. Supposed to be 150 watts. It’s a 10” speaker set back behind the baffle. I had a previous version blx80 when they came out. A bit of a muffled version of the trace sound but some really punch in it. Good amp.

Its not easy as we get older, can i suggest you pop the bass stuff away somewhere for a bit, give yourself a chance to sort out your head/find more likeminded players. I have been through similar phases and its rubbish. But what would be harder would be starting again buying gear to give you the best bass sound you have had. Take time, hope you can and do find a bunch of the right folk to play with. I am playing mostly original stuff and I'm very much the wrong side of 40, and Im the baby of the band... Jonny

Hi I was looking for some tips, my Subdecay Prometheus has starting glitching out, and dropping volume randomly. I am rubbish with anything like repairing things myself. Any recommendations (preferably Edinburgh based) where i can take it ini to get it looked at? Jonny

Mixed response here, mostly I plug in to the mixer and have the computer in another channel, sometimes my phil jones breifcase, and sometimes unplugged. All depends how I feel. Jonny

It was more the posts earlier about people who don’t know who Tim commerford or John myung is but they know who joe dart is… the urge was a great bass, I think stu’s more recent basses haven’t been as interesting…

Personally Im not a fan of signature basses or guitars which are just standard models in a different colour. I expect something that you cant just buy off the shelf (Yamaha attitude, Roscoe Beck V) spring to mind. I am not fussed if its been used on loads of records or none, but if it has features i cant get somewhere else. I had always assumed that as his stingray's are fairly standard this was why there wasn't a Tony Levin Signature. In terms of popularity, I dont think a non-bassplayer will buy a signature bass, but I think a bass player will buy a signature bass of someone they hadnt heard. I know I wanted a Roscoe Beck V when they were released but had no idea of the music he played. Jonny

Tbh, seems like a mix up then @Woodinblackapologies amigo I must have grabbed the wrong end of the stick with enthusiasm. I have been in bands where "note for note' was required...it was terrible stilted performances and bad practicing, never again. Be interested to hear how the chat between the band members goes. Jonny
