Manchester Guitar Tech gets a +1 from me
-
I was cajoled into letting a band use my MB CMD102P as they had decided they didn't want to bring their bass amp, even though they were supposed to be headlining and we were told that this would be the case - i brought mine cos i like to use my own wherever possible. So i come back from the toilet and i can see the "clip" light flashing away, so i walked over, reached up and turned the gain down, got a funny look from the bassist but once i explained what was going on he was ok. I was more concerned he doesn't understand the concept of input/output levels which i thought was pretty fundamental!

Anyone know what's happened to Guitar Emporium?

I hope so too, i had a look at their site a few weeks ago, it was still functional - but unfotunately the prices have gone up again. CIJs aren't too far off the price of a MIA which must be putting people off -
The web-site has disappeared!

They do have lots of options, but they can cater for pretty much anything. They do a standard jazz pu, they are called 64s, and dirtier, bassier overwound ones called 84s. I read about a customer who wanted something more substantial than the 64s, but not as dark as the 84s and Andy did a custom overwind of the 64 (a 74 as Andy called it!). They are brilliant and i'd recommend them to anyone

He can't get a Dean Edge anywhere and is getting pretty desperate - he needs it by the end of the month Any other ideas people? i've pitched the idea of converting an active to him and he's mulling it over
-
Think he's looking at a Dean Edge 5 or something? They look ok and i've seen some good reviews, anybody played one?
-
Anybody know of one? Not for me, i hasten to add. Main stipulation was that it was passive, and "none more black" but expressly not anything BC Rich like! Cheers!

They ripped me off in a massive way so i can't say i'm upset to see it go! Protium, if you're in the area and you need a repair or set-up, go to ManchesterGuitarTech, aka Steve Robinson. He's the best in these here parts!

I always found the Boss delays dead simple to use on the old guitar. I had the DD-3, that's really old now and been superseded by the DD-6 and more recently DD-7, but i found the DD-3 really strightforward. The newer ones have got a lot more functions (like reverse) and might not be what you're after

I had the tab book back in the days when i played the other thing, but i don't recall seeing any bass tab knocking about Quality tune though, if people didn't get caught up with all the fret w***ery they'd see it's not a bad album. Not a patch on the first though, natch!

Another Jazz v Precision but in context of a gig.
rasher80 replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
If you're going for a diverse range of music types, as Dave says - you aren't going to be able to tick every box authentically with just the one bass. You're going from Macca's Hofner with flats to KOL whose bassist uses a Thunderbird to the Killers who have gone from P to J and back again (or is that vice versa!). Precisions are often accused of being one dimensional, and as they only have the one split pickup, you will be able to get a bigger range of tones out of a Jazz. You don't get that "thunk" you get with Precisions though. It's an oft said thing round here, but one of each wouldn't be a bad way to go. The Squier CV or VM Jazzes have a lot of respect on the board, and aren't that expensive. Similarly there's a Precision or two in the range which are considered at least on a par, if not better than, the bottom of the range Mexican Fenders. -
Dunno really. I think that whether you like it or not "rebel" music is an important part of Irish music. The term covers a broad base which can, depending on your interperetation, include "trad" tunes as well as more modern songs i.e. in the last 50 or so years. Personally speaking, i think the comment about rebel songs being avoided is a bit wide of the mark. It's incredibly powerful and evocative music, and IMO it shouldn't be overlooked at all. Some of it is a bit extreme, which i disagree with - but if you have an issue with it, that's your problem. If i went to see a band that wasn't completely trad, i'd feel short changed if i didn't hear ANY. I know you're only expressing your opinion which i respect though!

Prices have gone up again at Guitar Emporium, not a million miles off MIA prices now! Shame

I traded my GB combo for the Markbass CMD102P and i couldn't be happier. It's a fantastic sounding amp which does everything i need it to, and i can't see me ever wanting to sell it

The shop in Manchester totally ripped me off a few years ago. I bought a rare Rickenbacker from them for well over a grand but then decided to move it on. I tried via this forum and a clued up member of the lefty fraternity told me they'd seen it on sale in a different store, i think in London for around £750 or something like that. We were pretty certain that it was the same bass as they are almost non-existent even right handed. I was disgusted and made my mind up never to give them a penny ever again.

I've not been at it that long to be honest, but: FIRST: Squier P Bass Special (which i still have!) into an Ashdown MAG C115-300 CURRENT: Fender CIJ 62 Precision into a Markbass CMD102P. Lovin it, lovin it, lovin it

i love The The. Very underrated band indeed. if you've never heard "The Beat(en) Generation" i urge you to go and listen. The lyrics are still amazingly relevant today, over 20 years later.

G & L Tribute L2000 for me please!

There's this one guy who posts bass videos on YT, mainly of Jamerson basslines, but he does some Rocco Prestia and other stuff too. His user name is Arcellus. Anyway, i think his playing is fantastic and i've used the videos to help me loads. But it makes me mad when people post up "yeah, good effort but you could do with getting the feel a bit more" etc etc etc. What a bunch of w***ers - if i could play half as good as this chap i'd be very happy indeed. Have a look at the line i mean - the crappy comments were there but i'm not sure if he's removed them. I think it's a brilliant bass-line - enjoy!! I've got a CIJ 62 Precision and i love it, it's the best bass i've owned so far - but i'm a lefty so there's not much choice. If i could have another i'd get another 62 or as Clarky said, the 70s CIJ Precision - slightly narrower at the nut than your common or garden precision. Having said that, i was worried about the step up from Jazz to Precision necks as i have smaller hands. When i got the 62, i realised that it was the ideal size for me believe it or not! I'd go CIJ all the way!

Depends what cab you run it through i suppose. I had the 3.0-10T combo (1x10 GB speaker) and while it sounded fantastic, i found that i had to push it just into the clip area quite a bit at rehearsals. Mark from Bass Direct assured me that even when the clip light begins to flash, it's just a bit of a warning and you can push the amp a bit further without it actually clipping, but i was reluctant to do this. I think if you have anything upwards of the 1x10 you should be fine. I know of one or two people who had the 212 Neox cabs and they seemed to work really well with the amp. It's very light though so don't topple it off the top of your cab if you're moving about a lot whilst playing!

i used to be a jazz guy, but since i got my precision it's kind of like i've reached bass heaven! Everything about it is appealing - no bells and whistles but a simple to use, fantastic sounding bass. I'd definitely love another - Pino style!
