That's the weird thing Barking. I started with one (a Yamaha, now sold). I was doing a musical shift so sold 2 flamencos (well, one isn't sold yet, it's on commission in London). I needed Fenders, that's how it got rolling. Given they were fairly mainstream affordables, I use FB and Gumtree. I have found FB to be very effective on basses (sub a grand anyway, well sub in most cases). First thing is mentally letting go, waving goodbye in your mind. Then, decent pics, good description and sensible price. I've bought 3 basses here, but not sold any so far. I'm sure there are BCers here can top my 9 minus 4. Step forward

If I knew what that was, I'd surely need some.

Thanks Greg, again. I'm no slapper but there are parts of the technique I want in my tool-box. I've watched a number of videos on the topic but none until now explained the contact point of your thumb. It's details like this that make the difference. Also many other vids get you popping well before the thumb technique is properly nailed. Good material here, recommended 👍

So does this work like disallowed goals? I need to check the rules

I'm a bit concerned I've bought nine basses since January this year. OK I've sold 4 of them so a net 5. But it's beginning to feel like a kind of illness. Step forward all who can top this. It'll make me feel better, or less weak at least. (in part two, I may own up to the amp/cab/combo issues)
-
Excellent opener, I reckon I need reminding sometimes... knobs n switches hold a fatal fascination But fact is a Trace head through a decent cab still does the job and then some.

Is 'Bow down' appropriate here? A page back or so there's a GB900 on a BF110... now that's a 'bow down' rig. Just sayin'

Keep seeing for sale threads here saying 'amazing bass, if only' - BUT this BE4 really is stupidly good and at this price It'd be mine, were it not for the Jazz* I collect tomorrow. If you get this @KingPrawn let us all know how you get along. The build on these is sublime. *another I know. Why? Not sure

The excersises that improved your playing
Soledad replied to fiatcoupe432's topic in Theory and Technique
Best thing for this I have found is to forget you're a bass player for a minute (hour maybe) and learn / pick up top lines off any song (radio source say). Play them real-time. Vocal top-lines take you across intervals and through progressions that bass lines generally don't go. So doing this takes you all over the fingerboard and also develops your ability to create melodic lines, how to develop them, where to take them etc. I think this is essential to worthwhile soloing because the listener doesn't want to count your notes or check your scales, they want music. I started doing this on fretless ages ago and it has made a very big difference. Not 1000 times, but substantial. -
EB Cobalts and pitch stability (staying in tune)
Soledad replied to Soledad's topic in General Discussion
OK, thanks to all - they are newish on and thru-body so maybe a bit more bedding in. I'm really happy with the strings in all respects so will stick with them and try help them settle Came from D'Addario 40-100 rounds and the tension feels quite similar. Neck has held pretty much as was and action stays consistent so I think truss rod setting is OK. I'll keep a closer watch on the whole set-up but I don't think it's down to neck movement and does seem sweaty venue related.. -
Bedroom combos is where it's at. Just collected an Ashdown Mag 250 210 combo for £120 - never been gigged, pretty clean and all working nice. There are plenty of good used combos around and a lot have never seen 'active service'. DI, tuner out, effects loop, 2 x 10s and a horn etc. All for under 25% of the OP's budget. I seriously recommend the OP has a good look at eBay, Gumtree, FB etc... spoiled for choice p.s. the Ashdown went straight to the rehearsal place and will live there until I no longer need it, then sell on.

Really happy with the EB Cobalts on my P, but I am finding they go flat mid-set. Previously a long-term user of D'Addario rounds and I reckon they were way more stable. Am I just running very hot (thermal, not tasty hot) or is this an issue with these EBs?

Are You Using 10ths In Your Bass Lines and Fills
Soledad replied to greghagger's topic in Theory and Technique
Good stuff - I really like the Jaco piece. Squeaky rounds eh Shame the theory/tech area here doesn't get more traffic and interest generally. I welcome anything that adds to or helps broaden how I play. Thanks, and worth a look/listen to anyone passing through. can I mention sound level on YT seems rather low, compared with other Yt content. I had to crank everything up to near max- 2 replies

I was recently reminded; beware the second set. First time out with band and under-rehearsed with them but fair bit of prep on my own. Ist set really quite neat so relaxed a bit. Big mistake. 2nd set not so clever. Also, it reminded me take care on the 'easy ones' - if you cruise in thinking this one's easy, it'll probably trip you up, often around the bridge I find

Acquired a mint used GB Streamliner 900 recently. I reckon it's up there with the best hybrid class Ds (valve pre, D main). I'd have liked a bit more EQ shaping - it has a 3 frequency mid sweep and I'd have liked 2 parametrics, but the core sound is very good anyway so I just tend to bump the lowish mids a little. Had an Aguilar Tone Hammer for a while - also really good but mid EQ limiting again. On EQ, I've never found anything better than the old Trace 7 band graphic. They picked the frequencies well and it gives you good mids control. Generally I find many good heads are limited by the shortage of mid eq flexibility. But the GB is a right good 'un - recommended used around 350 - 400... it's a lot of high-quality head (and it lights up luvvly).

May I ask why not the Fender - I reckon Fender have got their bass mojo back and these are good combos. Try the Hartke first - something odd about them I find, cold, dry, brittle or something. I think the TC is a very good option, but there are also some really good used combos around will inside budget, like this fine GK for example:

Did the same, a little mid-boost, backed off slightly on bass. To be fair it did cut through and sit nicely between kick and snare, but I wasn't getting the low top / crunch. It must be there, just passing through my legs!! I'll get a better sound check next weekend - sure I can get what I want from this rig. May end up with my Jazz and rounds...

@Paddy515 - interested in your GK Neos. Just took my 410 out live for first time last night and had to stand too close plus monitors were a bit low... bad sound night. Running mine with a GB Streamliner 900, P with bright (EB Cobalt) flats on and couldn't get the crunchy top - or maybe it was there out front but not close up off-axis. Basically how do you get along with your Neos??

Ollie bought my TC RS212 - prompt clear communication and immediate decision. Met to hand-over the next day, full asking paid. Excellent smooth transaction - highly recommended buyer and BCer. Trade with confidence. Cheers Ollie.
