  1. That's more like it. If you haven't experienced the cheap 60s basses, you're missing a reference point for bad. My first bass was a Vox quite like the pic. Short scale, guitar tuners so all the knobs broke off and pliers were required for tuning. bent neck, no truss rod and fingerboard was plywood. Couldn't call what it made a sound - old flats on and you got a bump of air with a hint of pitch in it. It was only my absolute conviction to one day get a Precision that kept me going. Truly really awful (the one in pic was auctioned recently for £220... why oh why?)
  2. Good point - the 3" is really wide so spreads the weight, but it might get toasty under there. Mislaid my leather strap of many years, it was perfect. Fifty quid for a strap gives me a headache, I can buy a reasonable combo for that
  3. Did you see the 450 combo and 112 ext for sale right here? The combo being 210, plus the 12 should sound tasty
  4. My current faves are EB Cobalts but I think you have that area covered with the TIs. Given the big band, I'd personally try some nylon flats on the second - I think they would play to the Ps strengths in the lows and mids, with a natural warmth that should suit the band. I'll watch out to see what direction you go in.
  5. I have an RS212 cab and rate it highly - excellent neutral sound, I mean it lets the amp decide how it sounds. Same HF as the 210 can be rolled off continuously by rotary on back - mid-setting is generally about right for me. Well built, nicely finished but above all excellent versatile sound and a LOT of it. I am seriously considering adding a 210 so I can use either depending or both if I ever needed those huge levels. Never used a 450 but hi and lo mids appeals. Had a 250 and it was pretty good but EQ was too limiting. Onboard tuner really excellent and the toneprint is great, esp. if you have the pedal to go from one print to another. I used the chorus with my fretless and for a one-knob chorus they got it really good. I switched it for a Tone Hammer - prefer the native sound of the Aguilar but miss the tuner and toneprint.
  6. Was all set to get a decent strap, then I came over all Yorkshire again (I'm down south by mistake). So got 2 (yep, two) Levy's 3" webbing straps from G4M for about 12 quid each. Very basic humble they are, dead pleased. If plain n simple appeals, I'd recommend these - light, comfy, no metal bits to scratch the bass.
  7. That might be what I need. Like this one? https://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Korg-GA-50-Guitar-Tuner/2PQD
  8. Just sold my TC BH250 and I really miss the onboard tuner (and the toneprint chorus for my fretless). The Unitune sounds a good bet to me. But what I'd really like is a small device that can sit discreetly by the head for when I need to check. The only options (apart from clip-on) seem to be pedal or rack. Going to a clip-on mid set seems a hassle. And the pedal tuners that get recommended cost more than I sold my BH250 for... ??!
  9. Consistently demonstrates a passion for values alignment, focus, simplicity, and clarity across the organisation. This is quite funny - is there anything at all about this ad that projects focus, simplicity or clarity? I'm sure he's a really good bloke and a very capable player, but this ad uses words the way he uses notes.

Neat and looks good. Where's the truss adjuster though? I do like unlined necks on fretless. My Mayones has 2 octave neck but there be dragons up there. 17 is high enough for me cos I go dizzy any higher.
  11. Interesting - I like very plain, understated like. Are we allowed to know who you got it from?
  12. It's just one big money grab, and I'm surprised there aren't more complaints about eBay these days. A recent change seems to be auction + 'make an offer' which is confusing. Seems to be more full of dealers and new stuff and fewer straight auctions from private sellers. I imagine FB, Gumtree, even Preloved are eating away at eBay's dominance. I like the dialogue you can have through any of those and of course no fees. EBay block phone numbers (for example) in messages. There's a get-round - just spell a few of the numbers, works a treat.
  13. There are good tales around that, whether true or not. Apparently they were mid-tour and he just went out one day and got pliers and epoxy and did it. I suspect there's a bit more to it than that, maybe. Re flats, I am actually som knocked out with the EB Cobalts on my P that I may well put them on my Jazz as well some time. My idea was keep rounds on the Jazz (D'Addario 45-100s) but the cobalts are bright enough, don't get the full 'ring' of rounds, but you lose the pronounced slide noise, and I do slide up n down quite a bit. The EBs were recommended to me by a few here, and for anyone who still thinks flats are all low-end thump, you're in for a pleasant surprise. Not cheap but really good.
  14. Well, wipe your muddy paws @ped Get what you're saying but I'll be OK with it I think, so long as it's reasonably stable. Should be able to fold it and take it places as I often have one fretted and the fretless on the go.May end up getting a neck-grab type also. This one will be way better than what I have at the mo. though. Thanks for the tip, I don't mean tip like falls over...
  15. No Bass day.
Got everything now. Stopped looking at basses and gear. OK - need a tuner having retired the TC with built-in (for an Aguilar, so no pain). Don't even need strings - totally happy with string choice and even have a new set of the rounds to replace when they go off. And a Hercules stand for the Jazz. That's about it.
How's it feel? Great, really good. Not like I'm skimping with 3 fine basses, 2 or 3 rigs including the newly acquired GB combo. No excuses, just play. Get better, Attack the stuff I'm wary of, confront the weaknesses. There is nothing on Earth so fine as a great bass through a great rig on a good day.

"because a Chapman Stick is not just for Christmas" That's right -  it's for dry lips in winter.

Nice Warwick @prowla. If I was going to be led astray a Warwick 5 could do it. Funny, some here hate Warwicks, don't know why views are so polarised. Mind you, some like weird custom basses with lights on. I don't, there you go.

I've got four Warwick 5-stringers; two are just right for me, one has a fatter neck profile which isn't quite me, and one an RB I'm building from parts. I previously had another RB and I couldn't get on with it at all.

I have to say that I like the idea of not having a body to go with the neck bridge and machine heads.  Saves the ears from a lot of incoming and unnecessary opinion on your choice of body style over theirs.

Other than that, I have no desire for a Chapman Stick even on a bitter Winter's day.  It's more of a technical appreciation with me.

  16. This looks ideal for me, I want something compact. The cradle arms moving so it takes the offset is exactly the thing I need. I'll order one. Thanks all 👍 p.s. done already - one-click Amazon £21. Really easy spending dosh with one-click innit
  17. Seems most stands are made for guitars with basses an afterthought - some don't like the long necks and feel close to falling over. Then there's the offset body issue. Any recommends please - specifically for my Jazz?
  18. Sorted @Shaggy
  19. Here's 2 sets for starters, maybe more when I have a clear-up. All 34" 4 string. 1] GONE. Fender flats - I think 45-105. Quite high tension but I reckon that's the gauge I got. Fitted to a Precision (not through body) so 4 one side. Silks are a bit fluffy but strings almost new. 2] PROB GONE already. D'Addario half-rounds 45-100s. 2 + 2 (off my Mayo fretless). Hardly used. Still available: 3]GONE: La Bella rounds - 45 100 (maybe 105). Off Precision thru-body (so will fit bridge mount too). Again, nearly new. Madness it is I'll check what else I have in the strings out-box. PM address and I will ship UK. Optional donations to NSPCC if concience dictates.
  20. If the bass you want them for is a 2+2 34", don't buy new ones!! pm me and i'll send mine over. D'Addario 45-100 I recall. Spent a few days on so good as...
  21. I do think flats have come on miles in the past 10 years or so - I recently asked for advice here about 'bright' flats and was recommended EB Cobalts or D'Addario chromes. I got a set of the EBs - amazing, the full-fat flat sound but with more than enough top - Ok not the ringy top of new rounds, but a crisp controllable crunch on the top... tasty. I'd used a set of Fenders recently and whilst many here like them, to me they are the old-school flats, not only devoid of top but no high-mids either. Depends what you want but sounds to me you would like the EBs (or Chromes maybe) a lot.
  22. Tried half-rounds a bit ago, kind of looking for best of both. I reckon half-rounds are a miss all over - don't get the low-end punch of flats or the ring of rounds, least I couldn't. If you want half of both try some half rounds
  23. If one had come up close by and for sensible money I'd probably have got one. According to the Americans, the Workingmans is preferred to the later (current?) Working Pro. Look how compact it is! MY GB is considerably bigger, but I can lift it into my pick-up... it's basically a bag of cement so a fair lift but OK. Anyway, that's me done on amps for a while. Nice EB3 (maybe they call them something else now), I owned a Gibson variant years ago but used to fight it for sound - bags of character and very cool looking.
  24. I came very close to getting a 900 a few months ago... it may even still be here. I mean, what would I do with 900W. Like giving Butthead a chainsaw Anyway, got it back. All pretty clean. QC dated Sept 2005. Had the head out and grill off. Bass drivers both excellent, smooth and clean. Amp a bit dusty inside so cleaned fan and vac-ed dust out. Had 2 crackly pots so that's mainly why the head came out - lubed the pots, seems OK now. Early days - its flat sound is really good. Harder then my Aguilar through a TC 212, probably to be expected but just generally a more forward 'present' sound. Partly that's the 10s at work. But then a really rich depth if you lift the bass or select the low boost - one of 3 pre-sets: low, mid scoop, 'signal attack' which seems to boost high mids and lower top plus adds drive... that's how it sounds anyway. Excellent sound straight off with the P + EB flats; good with the Jazz + rounds but more exploring to do. Not quite there with fretless + La Bella white nylons - just need to play more with the mids I think. Missing (if it really matters): no mute on front; DI is pre only (no big deal I think). I'll get used to no mute but would have been handy. Good bits: 2 x 10 and horn. Can switch fan off at low levels - good for a 'pro' combo. The usual tuner out, effects in/out. Don't get the dual output - can switch from 2 x 100W to a bridged 200 (into 8 ohm) but not clear why. 2 x big handles and generally built like a brick. Has a tilt foot to angle back. Got a nice big Genz Benz logo on the front - call me shallow. Ordered a jack to speakon to add a second cab, just to see how it sounds. But overall very pleased. Like the Aguilar, I've found everything flat is very close to the sound, and mainly adjusting the mids a little is all I need. If anyone has one of these M heads or combos and better understands the point of dual output, I'd like to know.
  25. me too - EB Cobalts on the P, D'Addario rounds on the Jazz. I could see a day I'd put cobalts on the Jazz too, but the P + flats is a perfect fit I reckon.
