Things I remember from woodwork lessons: measure twice and mark up clearly, always cut on the wastewood side of the line, planing anything square is sodding difficult. Planing it square and not Β½" undersized is sodding impossible! Well done!

I threw out the linseed oil I used on my school cricket bat some years ago. Still got the bat, though I hardly used it at school. I could probably string it and put pickups on it, would get more use!

I went with the F-one fretboard conditioner, which should arrive in the next couple of days. Will report back.

Never heard of that. Got some brown sauce in the cupboard though. I went with F-one fretboard conditioner, which should arrive in the next couple of days. Will report back.

Strictly speaking a birthday present, but my birthday is so close to Father's Day that they tend to get merged. Very pleased π

The Big Fat South-West Bass Bash - Now Sunday 19th September 2021
Richard R replied to scrumpymike's topic in Events
Written it on the calendar, hopefully I can make it. -
If you end up with a bass so black it resembles Disaster Area's stuntship then remember to plunge it into the sun at the end of the concert!

Will be following this with interest.

Thanks for that. Look forward to the video - especially as when we are eventually allowed out of our bubbles my son wants me to accompany him to buy an acoustic guitar π -

Now THAT is the word for the weekend! Especially if playing scrabble. More seriously, when you say it "rings like a bell", do you hold it by a corner and tap it? What happens if it goes "donk" at this stage? -
Both! See my earlier post on your bench vs an Aston Martin V8 Vantage π

I have just googled this on Benchcrafted. No wonder I was confused, the thing is completely misnamed. According to their site is it an X shaped device compromising two hinged arms, which keeps the bench jaws parallel. Quick history lesson: St.Peter was crucified upside down, so St Peter's Cross is an inverted cross. You see it on old parish churches of St Peter. St Andrew was crucified on an X shaped cross, which is why the Scottish Saltaire is a white X. Both symbols are well known within the Christian, and especially Catholic, tradition. I had assumed the St Peter's cross in this device was an inverted cross, somehow bracing the lower part of the leg. Clearly the St Peter's cross in this case was misnamed by someone and in ignorance it stuck. https://www.classichandtools.com/acatalog/BenchCrafted-Crisscross-Retro-BC-CCR.html#SID=1821

I still don't know what the St Peter's Cross is. I shall wait for photos of the complete vice, hopefully labelled. The while thing is a great idea though!

Another 27" Short Scale Mini Bass (but with LEDs)
Richard R replied to Jabba_the_gut's topic in Build Diaries
Do they need to be especially bright? -
If you can do the Subaru stars and a huge 555 logo then even better π However writing "Colin McRae" on the headstock might be going a bit far. Should look good, awaiting pics with interest.

That's what at least one of our bands does. π

It's 25 years since I did anything with optical fibre, but you can colour the inboard end of the fibre to filter the colours. -

I wasn't going to mention the tri colour LED, in case I thought shallow and flash, but clearly that's where this should be headed. π "FS/FT: Jaba 'lockdown fibre rainbow bass.' Control plate knobs are volume, pickup pan, stacked bass/trebble, and individual RGB intensity. Not good for metal, but great for Blues. Or Greens. Or Taup if you must" -

Question: rather than LEDs at each position, is there any manufacturer using a single brighter LED and running optical fibres to the position dots? I suspect not, but it would be interesting if anyone has. -
Blue and gold should look like this! π

It is definitely a lot more time consuming than just playing live. We now have, after 12 weeks of this, a folder full of songs so we are starting to reuse them. We have also said to the bands that they do not have to do a video of them singing! A background with words is absolutely fine. Thankfully my playing is nowhere near good enough to play on these songs, but I do spend a long time each week editing the service together once everyone else has their bits. This service has a mix of video types, band videos, words and background, and one bespoke song video. A mix of different video editors as well.

So far my deduction from this thread is "pretty much any light mineral oil that isn't too astringant will be better than nothing".

Skydd!! Great name for an oil!!

Ah! I knew there would be something already on BC, but hadn't found it. Despite having posted in that thread. Thanks π
