Yew-topped SG-style Guitar * Finished Pics!
Richard R replied to Andyjr1515's topic in Build Diaries
Dumb question: Is a truss rod fixed into the groove in any way? If it's just loose on the slot then I can't see how it would do the job, as it would just slop about, but no build ever mentions "bond the truss rod into the groove". -
When Do You Think Your Band Will Start Gigging Again ?

I've got one here you can borrow. It's about twice as long as half its length if I remember right. -
When Do You Think Your Band Will Start Gigging Again ?

Depends on when churches in the UK re-open, as that's the only band I play in. For those of you who gig for a living, here's to full houses and safe travels when we're out of this! -

Or the swirls in my glass as I slowly poured in a pint of Old Speckled Hen. Which would be a great name for a guitar. -

What are you listening to right now?
Richard R replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
Listening to a long conference call about how our End User Computing operations have coped so far with Covid-19. Which is actually very well. But I am on mute so I might be playing Mike Oldfield's Platinum in the background 😉 -

I have finally realised what the figuring on that body reminds me of. The vortex swirls you sometimes see behind the wings of aircraft, or the wake of a powerboat. As if the neck is passing though the fluid body at speed and leaving vortices in its wake. -

I dont know how Android phones work, but if you can record in to the phone using the headphone socket then I can’t see why not. Unless Apple have changed recently, there are two versions of 4-pole TRRS jacks. The one everyone used since mobile phones came out, and the one Apple uses which has the mic on the wrong ring. This probably does not matter one jot in this case, unless Yamaha specifically have a 4 pole socket, which would be pointless. I have one on order due this week, and an Android phone. I expect them to play nicely 🙂 -
Welcome aboard! Others will give you far better advice than I, but here is my tuppence worth: Start slowly play slowly. I started a couple of years ago, in my '50s, and it takes time to get your fingers to move and most people don't normally stretch their hands much. You will be able to cover 3-6, maybe even 1-4 over time, but don't stress now. Start further up the fretboard where the frets are closer together and life might be easier. I found studybass.com really useful when I started, other sites re available and there are online tutors here too. Oh yeah, one other thing, which a good friend of mine said. If it was dead easy, everyone would do it and it wouldn't be cool, right? 😎

Stay safe out there, NYC is taking a battering. But BC is a haven of bass-related gibberish, stupid puns, wonderful wisdom, build diaries to read in awe.. and when necessary genuine comfort and support. Welcome aboard!

This is clearly one of those jobs where having the right tools is going to help a lot. Though that does not in any way detract from the skill required to use them properly! -
Why do I not own this album??

Cut the MOP inlays so that they are the same shape but smaller, so you don't remove the ends when you radius the fretboard? -
I agree we would be much better with something where we could post a link and have people join, rather than needing to have a specific account in advance. Zoom have improved their client, password required by default and a few things, but they still use sub-standard encryption, route traffic through China for no good reason, and ship data to FB without being upfront about it. Hangouts looks better, need to look further into it. There are a couple of lesser-known options too. For typical consumer offering you have to accept that a "free" service is often paid for with your personal information, and that's acceptable of you know up front and are happy with the trade off. Likewise companies shouldn't claim a service is enterprise grade end-to-end encrypted when it isn't. Zoom rolled their own encryption algorithm so low bandwidth performance was better. A schoolboy error because it was demonstrably rubbish. (I probably come across as wearing a tinfoil hat and sandals when it comes to security. That isn't entirely the case - my sandals broke on holiday last year.) Will set up another test after Easter, then a VBash in May I hope.

Welcome aboard! At this point I would normally point you to the Midlands Bass Bash thread in the Events section and demand that you attend, but it's postponed for now. However if you do pop over and follow the thread you will see that we have had a first test run of a Virtual Bass Bash, and will be testing another platform "real soon now"

Welcome aboard! I like the blue on on the sofa 😁 -
You might have named them Slimer and Homer, I stick with my choices as I have never yet watched an episode of the Simpsons all the way through.

I've watched these for a while, but not posted. The EVO basses look great, and the bright colours absolutely suit them. I would have named the green and yellow ones Kermit and Beaker if they were mine 🙃 The key question- are there any sound clips?

You mean there are radio stations other than Radio 4?? -
That is a limitation of both Skype and Teams. To be honest though, I spend half my working day on video conferences, and usually you only look at the current speaker anyway. You just have to assume that people are concentrating and not scratching their bits under the desk.

Thanks Nick. Very comprehensive, if a little complicated for my bands. For lo-fi fun Acapella is a phone app that lets people record independently and the the app stitches them together and produces a video. But you wouldn't release the results commercially. 🤣
