Maybe because the open string is more free to vibrate over a zero fret than within a nut slot? There would be a little more horizontal freedom for sure, and perhaps more vertical if the break angle didn't pull the string down hard? Maybe a clamp that screws the strings down hard against the zero fret would stop this wear, and do double-duty as the clamp on a headless bass?

Sounds fabulous, though a hell of a lot of work for you so don't feel you have to do the cab build as well. You need browsing time too. I could possibly bring the church portable PA, which is an older Yamaha analogue mixer with built in amps plus a couple of 12" tops. Nobody would ever buy that gear new now, but it's inexpensive on the 2nd hand market. Careful choice of reference tracks will be required for this... 😉

Bugger! I haven't played the bass with the hex pickup this year, so I thought I'd have a practice on that rather than the #1. Except one of the pickups isn't working, so the A string is silent. 😠 This is a real problem, there are a dozen very, very, fine wires in the pickup, so a repair will probably only make things worse. A straight replacement is nearly £200, and I would probably get a proper fitting kit instead if I had to spend that much. In which case I would also replace the truss rod, reshape the headstock and do a lot of things I have no time for. Practical upshot is that it's not going to be sorted by the bash. I can bring it along anyway, so people can hear the various emulations of they want to?

I decided I should listen to the Oasis compilation "Stop the clocks", so I could form a more objective view on the band. There were some clever lyrics in a couple of songs, and I can see why they appealed to people. However I need a bit more variety in my music, so the next two hours is this:

Happy to go along with this, it's a sensible trade-off. Pretty much any system for guaranteeing buyer/seller ID can be thwarted with enough effort. This is a small amount of effort with (from the anecdotal experience of the air rifle forum) a reasonable success rate. If BC decided to introduce full financial services Know Your Customer identification processes with passports and proof-of-life photgraphs then that would be more secure, but too inconvenient for most users.
