If you take up the bass after you have been happily married for over 25 years then the bottom line is the expectation, and the reality is the same, but probably with fewer basses. 😁

If you order direct from their web site, then shipping to the UK is flat rate of AU$7, didn't change whether you added 1 pack or 10 to the basket. https://kracklekillers.com/

Welcome aboard! There isn't a sub forum called "BassCrap", but if there was there would be a lot of us on there! But it's fun improving, however slowly.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you both. Despite what we generally imply on this forum, spouses are more important than basses.
-
So you found a solution, and have tested it, AND it worked. That's a result in anyone's book.

Welcome aboard, Ben! The switch from headphones to an amp makes a big difference - it's more engaging and sounds better too! 😁

What are you listening to right now?

My wife's old iPod on shuffle. The songs haven't been changed in about 8 years and playing "beat the intro" is huge fun. Currently just jumped from Madonna "Ray of Light" to something by Elton John that I recognise but annoyingly still can't name 2 verses in! -
Saw the review of these on Sound on Sound and thought I'd share it here. https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/krackle-killers No affiliation, or experience of using them, just thought they looked useful.

Welcome to the introductions thread!

Not quite true on the VAT. "There is VAT on second-hand goods if the seller is VAT registered. Generally, businesses are required to register for VAT once their taxable turnover reaches £85,000 for 2019/2020. " The carnet article is interesting too: "Minister Dinenage confirmed that a simple ‘oral declaration’ could be made by musicians who are travelling with portable musical instruments and that a costly ATA Carnet would not be required. Musicians transporting instruments and equipment by car, van or truck would require a Carnet, however,..." But you're one bloke with a bass so you're fine. See you in September!

I guess you would need a carnet to declare what you bring into the country and you show the same when you leave. If you haven't got the same items on exit then you would be charged the import tax. Someone here will have toured internationally outside of the EU and know the rules. I seem to remember an old Top Gear special where they get stuck at some African border because one of the cameras wasn't the same as on the paperwork. ☹

Welcome to Basschat, though shame it's not in more cheerful circumstances. Really sorry to hear about the flood, and hopefully the insurance will cover the damage. The WD in WD40 actually stands for Water Displacement, so using it to drive off moisture and prevent rust is perfectly fine. I've not used it on electronics, but I would. Others with more experience will be along to advise about other gear, or you can repost in Repairs and Technical, where you'll definitely get help. Fingers crossed 🤞.

Likewise. I can't stand Metallica, but at least I got to the end of that and now appreciate there is a song underneath the original racket 🙂. The vocalist was very close to Sinatra, and that's a good thing. Very smooth but with just a hint of menace in the delivery, no more than Frank would have though. The solo guitar in the middle felt out of place - presumably in the original there is a shreddy guitar section which he was copying? Better to have left it out and just served the vocal.

Still want to be involved??? 🙃

"It's a cold night in Berlin". "The Ox las left the room, but his jacket is still here". "Leo got it right first time" <Silence, then the sound of a muffled pistol shot and a body being wedged into a double bass case> "Wrong answer my unfortunate friend"

Your just shorting the jack lead, so there is no signal at all to the amp and therefore no chance of stray pickup. Its an input short, not an output. You can buy jacks that do this when the lead is unplugged- the FOH engineers' friend. https://www.neutrik.com/en/neutrik/products/plugs-jacks/plugs/professional-1-4-plugs/silentplug

Just found this: Push-Pull Pots - How They Work, Wiring Mods, and More! (fralinpickups.com) So actually it would be dead easy to both cut the battery +ve feed and short the jack terminals when the pot was pulled out. But as @John Cribbin says - most people would be happy to just leave the lead on the floor 🙂
-
That S1 is clever - putting that in the list of "things to think about when I build a bass". If I was modifying mine then a push-pull might be the simplest.

On an active bass it's normal to have the active electronics switched on by inserting the jack plug of the lead. Simple cheap and reliable. However it would certainly be more convenient for me for the practice setup if I could leave the lead plugged in and switch the electronics off at the bass, ideally by turning the volume down to zero then click to off. Or have pull-to-off perhaps. Either way it's tidier and quicker to start noodling. I wonder if the switch would need to not only disconnect the active electronics and but also short the jack lead so it didn't act like an aerial, which might get a bit complicated. Any thoughts on whether this is a sensible idea? I assume it's not trivial otherwise some manufacturers would do it.
