Welcome aboard!! I have had a bass almost three years, and three years ago I couldn't play. Now I still can't play very well - but what the heck, I can get through a song, muck about in tune and on time (generally) and I enjoy myself 😁 I found StudyBass.com and Scotts Bass Lessons both hugely valuable. The former is genuinely free, very well structured and well presented. Scott Devine is a bit Marmite, but the academy content is good. Loads of support on here.

The 2020 rules were pretty clear. If its in the signal chain it counts: basses, amps, preamps, pedals, some PA gear I think. The exceptions were consumables (strings, cables, picks) and replacements for breakages. Having said that, arguing about whether a particular purchase is in or out is half the fun 😉

Most of us also have a taste for terrible puns and wordplay, which will stretch your English as well. Though not as far as the equivalent would stretch my schoolboy French.

I regard the notation jokes as educational puzzles. Some are easy, but the latest on one on the bad jokes thread is annoying me no end.

Last year was easy, all I bought or needed was strings and a pedal tuner. The tuner sits in the signal line so I went out on that. This year I actually want to fail more impressively, somewhere around the £700 nice bass mark would be good. But alas I have the same wise old birds as @Al Krow, telling me that I've already got a bass way better than I am, a new one (even a nice 5-er) won't make me play better, and I just practice properly. Having no shops open doesn't help. I'm in, but I don't want to be!
