1. might be worth a punt http://basschat.co.uk/topic/309181-trace-elliot-gp12-smx-280w-amp-and-ashdown-rm115-evo-cab/page__pid__3340417#entry3340417
 2. I don't tip very often, if I'm in a full waiter/waitress service restaurant ( not very often I usually go to pay when you order at the bar type of places) I leave a tip if I've enjoyed the meal, but that's the only time, But I know it's a different culture in the states, apparently in some places the waiting staff get paid nothing if it's a busy restaurant, I suppose if the food prices reflect that and everyone is aware of that it's ok
 3.
Just to clarify, you're quite right that the famed pre-shape 1 just gets lost in the mix. However, using a combination of the graphic and the pre-shapes can give you a very wide range of very usable tones that cut through any mix. Also, just using pre-shape 2 on its own (adjusting the EQ balance to suit the room) has got me straight out of many 'lost in the mix' situations over the years.
yes preshape 1 is a no no unless you want boom, preshape 2 is more usable, I came across this somewhere which I found useful Pre-Shape 1:+6dB at 50Hz and 2kHz, -6dB at 400Hz. Pre-Shape 2: +5dB at 100Hz, +3dB at 3kHz and -5dB at 650Hz. I should also add I use a zoom B1on with just the Sansamp Bass drive sim engaged with just the Gain and Blend set to 75 and no added EQ for my 'normal' sound.
 4. being a lefty buying from a shop isn't really an option, "we can get you one on special order sir", plus I can't really tell if a guitar/bass suits my needs until I've lived with it for a whille, I never buy new either, that way if I don't get on with it I can move it on without losing a lot of money
 5.
I don't know why people use them. I'm defo a pre-shape - OFF man
I never use the preshape either, sounds good at home but in a band gig situation you need the mids, I've gone from cutting the mids (around the 600hz area) slightly to leaving them alone and having the the bottom three sliders (GP12) right down, anything below 100hz tends to cause boom, on my set up anyway
 6. and me first time for about 3 weeks
 7.
Its all getting a bit too technical for yir average bassist. All we want to know is how to play it and does it sound good. Dave
yep, if it sounds good it is good
 8. on the subject of flattened notes, I know my theory is sadly lacking but the note that makes a chord a 7th is not in the major scale, something about dominant scale, it always strikes me as odd, but it sounds ok, almost like well it doesn't follow the rules so we'll make up a new one up
 9.
Aynsley?? Ive learned something from this thread - back in the early 70s anyone suggesting playing EEE G#AG# E etc etc would have been considered in the same light as someone insisting on having fish djou rather than liquor with their pie and mash - basically wrong!! However having tried it I'm amazed that it sounds ok and can see why people might - especially if they're very acquainted with the Sweet song. The other thing is the early jump to B on the bass - Mr Boulder said in a BGM or BP interview many years ago that it was a cock up but Bowie liked it - having now watched the video of the Spiders from Mars attached, I do wonder given the speed that everything was recorded whether he Bowie didn't want to or wasn't allowed to fix the error. Having heard it off and on for 45+ years I'm now getting used to it
our guitarist is a bit of a Bowie freak and he reckons the single was recorded as a demo while touring America so the Bolder error wasn't corrected because it wasn't intended for release, sent it back to the UK and the record company promptly released it as it was, similar thing happened to Buddy Holly's That'll be the Day, I believe
 10.
Cheers Lefty, but buy which one? I'm getting bamboozled by all the different options!
I've got 2 GP12's heads one an SMX and the a series 6, the SMX has more bells and whistles but they sound pretty similar, I got them for under £200 each and they're both in excellent condition, I've also had a 7215 SMC GP7 combo, which I sold because of the weight, they all sound pretty much the same tbh just look out for a good condition one, shouldn't have to pay more than £200 I'd say, have a look on ebay, they're usually collection only so you have to wait for one nearby but they are cheaper that way
 11. I've got a couple of Trace heads (no they're not for sale)they're rated at 200 and 250 watts and they're both as loud as my 500 watt Rumble V3, I use them with Fender V2 cabs, I've had a combo but they are heavy, a head with lightweight cab is a nice compromise IMO
 12.
Also came across this version where Trevor is playing GAG More noticeable around the 3min area Never seen this version before and an unusual costume for Bowie that i had never seen before.
bit ropey, not a patch on the TOTP version
 13.
What on earth is 'Game Of Thrones'?
I think it's one of these programs that aren't on any freeview channels, where there's a load of hype so us with only freeview rush out to get sky or netflix, sorry won't work, my freeview recorder is already nearly full of stuff I'll probably never have time to watch. Mind you I might get round to watching more stuff if I spent less time on here
 14. doh indeed, won't be doing that again, good job I was using 2 cabs otherwise I'd have really started panicking, I'm sure other's have done something just as silly, haven't they?, ought to start a thread
 15. ok I think I've figured it, looks like I could have plugged one of the speaker jacks into the footswitch socket by mistake (they're next to each other on the back panel), no harm done
 16. did a gig at the weekend with full PA, with the XLR plug into the back the EQ (and the preshape but I don't use that) section refused to switch on, still didn't when I uplugged the XLR after the gig but just tried it at home and it works fine, I know this can be an issue with SMX's but I was wondering if it could have been caused by the XLR feed to the mixing desk
 17.
Agreed, but if I've learnt anything from this thread it's that I've been playing 'wrong', our guitars have been playing it right and it doesn't really matter that much if I play it wrong or right as both work well
tbh I think they both sound ok, can't really tell any difference, but I've got cloth ears, but looking at the video it's obvious that G A G is the way Bolder played it and he wrote the bass line so that's got to be the correct way, hasn't it? edit, at the weekend I played blitzkrieg Bop A C D with the Guitarist doing it properly A D E and it was video'd and you can hardly tell, thankfully
 18. I normally don't bother the odd spelling error but it's really starting to piss me off, it's the Jean Genie, not Gene Genie or G G, if you can't spell it right it's not a good start, and if G A G doesn't sound right it's probably because you've got so used to playing it wrong, or, your guitarist isn't playing it right, ok rant over
 19. don't know about anybody else but I prefer to pay for my beer in cash, I can tell how much I've spent a lot easier (and whether I've been fiddled) I think it depends on what type of pub it is, generally the older the customers the more cash is used, indeed some pubs I go in don't even take cards or if they do you've got spend over a tenner, a separate issue, the big bad banks have made a brilliant job of making themselves indispensable don't you think?
 20. been said before but worth saying again, the crowd will know a good band from a bad one but won't know the reasons
 21. mistakes can be part of the show, if you handle it right the crowd find it amusing, once in a while anyway
 22.
Popped up while I was typing. Being paid cash is fine, it's the refusal to accept invoices which makes it hard. And I play up to five gigs a week, with no other income, all local venues this year. I can invoice a couple pubs and a handful of weddings, but HMRC might like to know how I got by for '16-'17. Telling them it was all cash, and givng them a record of it all which I wrote down myself might not get brushed off quite so smoothly. Maybe there's more provision for earning cash out of the landlords pocket than I thought, but I would still welcome a more invoice friendly system.
never understood why landlords pay a band 'off the books' after all it's tax deductable for them, on the other hand if you don't sign a receipt for the money it's a gig done for free as far as some bands are concerned. Of course if it's your main source of income you have to justify your life style as opposed to your declared income, a lot of tax avoiders get caught out like that
 23.
I shouldn't have posted when not sober,
sage words indeed, I think a lot of us have been there
 24.
I can't really see a problem for the run of the mill semi pro musician, as has been pointed out we probably lose out financially when equipment and travel are factored in. I believe this is aimed more at companies using the current legislation to avoid employee rights, such as a decent contract with NI payments, holiday pay, sick pay, guaranteed hours for those who want it. etc. It would make a nice change if the tax loopholes were closed to stop the companies and people who can more than afford to pay there tax bill, rather than chasing a part time window cleaner or a semi pro musician who is probably losing money when all expenses are taken into account. It simply makes it look like the administration are doing something if they chase the little guy. What is being suggested looks like a step in the right direction to me.
Playing devils advocate, if all the small time tax dodgers were added up it would probably be far bigger tax loss than what the likes of Starbucks and Amazon cost the exchequer, you're talking billions of pounds, that's why the Government hates cash, but it'll be a long time before people start paying the window cleaner in anything other than cash. Slightly different point, some pubs want to pay in cash because it costs them to bank money (not as much as paying by card costs them though), they like to get rid of it, hence cashback
 25.
The usual then..... Kick drum and vox at ten with everything else at two....and like the op said all of it through the highest tech money can buy....dear oh dear. Also I have never understood the term ..."our own sound guy"....how difficult is it to eyeball the instruments on stage, then eyeball the channels and then loose the mud and get it all crisp and shiny....99% of bands sound roughly the same anyway cause they play the same instruments. I stand to be enlightened of course.
well if you don't want the kick at 10 and everything else at 2 you need your own sound guy, apparently.
