there's watts and then there's watts, my 200 watt Trace Elliot is just as loud if not louder than my 500 watt Fender Rumble, whether it's to do with the Rumble being a class D I haven't got a clue, hell I don't even know how they manage without a bloody great power supply
What a great great idea using the Zoom headphones out. Never thought of that and Ive got IEM's just sitting in my guitar case! Ive got an AC moulded earplug at -15DB but I just dont get on with them and everything sounds muffled to me (although I put them in later in the rehersal rather than at the beginning which may be the problem) so will try the "zoom soloution" - Thanks!
glad I'm not the only one that finds these ear plugs muffle the sound, people say they just cut across the entire frequency range, but not in my experience

I've just been messing a round with my recently acquired Squire VM Jazz, trying to get the action the same as my MIA P, I found it difficult to measure the height with a steel rule accurately, even with a magnifying glass so I used a pound coin under the E string at the last fret, they're 3.15mm and found it to be spot on for my playing style (1mm pick)

played a gig in the basement at Rock City at the weekend and the sound was suburb for all 5 bands, in fact our fans that were there said it was the best they've ever heard us, restored my faith in sound men it did
Can the band gig without the PA, regardless of whether everything is going through it or not?
can a band gig without a drum kit or a bass amp or a guitar amp? if it's purely the singer using it then yes it's up to the singer to provide it, but I suspect there's not that many bands like that, which complicates things
Erm, excuse me! Unless you are putting everyone thru the pa, surely the pa is the singers responsibility, or at least he should contribute more?
tricky, depends how much the rest of the band uses the PA, we decided to get a PA out of bands funds like I said, but I did draw the line at the singer getting a wireless mic out of band funds!
-
Our case is a bit complicated, the band bought the PA out of band funds then 2 members left, me and the singer agreed a price with them and bought out their share of the PA so me and the singer now own it, we split gig money equally but if anything needs repairing it comes out of band funds, like someone else said, what ever works for your band, oh yeah, the PA is split between the 4 members regarding storage and transportation

We do get accused of being too loud sometimes in a small pub, but we don't mic the drums up, so short off sacking the drummer because hits them too hard there's not a lot we can do about it, I'm left shaking my head in disbelief when I see a band micing up the drum kit for a pub gig

guitarist or guitar player? usually guitarist, so definitely bass player

Noel Gallagher doesn't like Jazz Music.
I agree with him about jazz. I hate it. I hate rap and hip hop too.
I'm with you timmo, except maybe Take 5 the odd Kenny Ball song and Fight for your right to party, not sure that counts as rap or hip hop, hell I don't even know the difference between rap and hip hop, is there one? Always like Noel's interviews, he doesn't take himself too seriously, and anybody that does takes themselves far too seriously -
I've got one and the bridge is 'bowed' as you say, I always assumed is was to follow the radius of the neck, you can get new bridges for them, just search for Gibson 3 point bridge, can't say I'm a fan of them because you can't adjust string height individually

I started playing again in my early 50's and if someone had told me I'd still be doing it 12 years later I'd have said they were mad, but I still am and intend to carry on for a few more years yet, if you're physically up to it why not? and at my time of life I've got more time, and more money to spend on gear, it's great to be honest. Oh yeah and a partner that gives you support instead of grief helps a lot.
I think that comes under the heading of "accidentally accurate".
lol, that's the trouble with relying on spell checker
The busiest pubs I see routinely are Wetherspoons who not only don't put bands on, they don't even do background muzak. Obviously their strategy is to sell drinks at low prices and it works for them but I think it's also symptomatic that pub culture is generally changeing. There will always be some specific music oriented venues but the days of every street boozer corner having a turn on every Saturday is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. I wouldn't particularly look to the next generation to change that either. Half of them spend more on fancy coffees looking at their phones than they do beer and socialising with real people. But I'm just a middle aged out of touch git.
yep this is true, the cultures changing, a lot of people go to the pub to drink real ale (you can't get that at a supermarket) and have a chat, the story goes that Tim 'Wetherspoons' Martin, got the idea when he was at Nottingham University, he got frustrated because he couldn't find a quiet pub to have a drink of good beer in, so he started Wetherspoons, there's still a market for pubs with music but not on the scale it used to be
There are an increasing number of bands chasing a decreasing audience.
agree with the deceasing audience (and Venues) not sure about the increasing bands though

try this link http://www.21frets.com/catalogs/Smx.pdf Trace Elliot hi fi sound? wouldn't have said that, I might about class D amps
Bigot = "a person who is intolerant towards those holding different opinions"
must remember to tell our singer he's a bigot, he thinks that anybody that votes UKIP is a ****
Probably the most worrying question is Why are there so few young bands playing pubs?
because not enough young people go in Pubs? not encouraged are they? a friends 17 year old daughter likes to come and see the band I play in (with her Dad), half the time she can't get in the pub, never mind no under 18's most of them have a no under 21's rule, she is the exception though, most youngsters seem more interested in Video games, and why not? nothing stays the same
I see problems for bands and live music all around in the South East. The nature of entertainment generally has changed. There is a lot of competition for the pound in our pockets and the quality of live music is very variable. Attention spans are getting shorter. There is total access to music online so seeing a band isn't special any more. People are drinking at home, coming out later and spending a lot less in the pub. Audiences don't want to be blasted out of their seats by a loud unbalanced racket. Neighbours have total control and are using it to stop loud music. Most landlords and pub managers aren't very good at that job let alone being a good music promoter. A lot of the local gigs have either been knocked down as a result of huge town centre redevelopment or they're now Tesco and Sainsbury's Express shops. I don't see how it will get better.
agree with most of this, but, a few real ale pubs in my area are really popular, they put on limited live music but not full rock bands that would be too loud, but yeah there's a lot more competition for people's leisure time these days and pub companies are at fault where they make running a pub so uneconomically that only an idiot would try it and I'm afraid that's what they get. With limited full music venues I'm afraid unless you want to travel long distances fewer gigs are going to happen, mostly, these days, folk go to the pub to enjoy a decent pint and have a chat, Rock and roll is dying? maybe

I guess at the end of the day it's all down to an individuals attitude to risk, mines quite high, I don't take insurance out on anything unless I'm forced, i.e. car and home insurance (couldn't afford to rebuild my home if it burnt down), where as some people take insurance and extended warranties out on everything, if you lie awake worrying about it take out the full monty
-
what would be being claimed? an accident on the way for a drink to the pub, or perhaps a prang in the pub car park, unless you're actually going to claim for stolen gear whilst in the car I can't really see a problem
-
never even thought about it, I pay just over £200 for a 12 year old Mondeo, why do you need it? it's just a hobby, who's going to know? or am I being naive.
Our singer uses one. I'll admit its better than having sheets of paper in a songbook, but we are a covers band with 30 something songs in our crrent list. I dont understad why the rest of the band can be arsed to learn the songs and play from meory but the singer cant do this with the words.
singers eh? to be fair when we learn a song it's quite repetitive, verse, chorus, verse , chorus middle bit etc, you get idea, but usually every verse is different so it's harder to memorise, having said that singers can idle bastards as well
Fair enough. It's a bit of a departure for them, and I have wondered if Joey was the only actual Ramone on that particular track, but personally I think it's close to the pinnacle of the Phil Spector collaboration, surpassed only by Rock 'n' Roll radio. (Honourable mentions for Danny Says and Rock 'n' Roll high school). Edit. Maybe this Ramones cover is more up your street?
yeah end of the Century was essential a Joey Ramone Rock and Roll album, I think Johnny and Dee Dee were hardly on it at all, but still a great record apart from Baby I Love You (IMO) which I suspect was put on there to keep Phil Spector happy, but perversely was their biggest UK hit, they did do some great covers though, this is probably my favourite, who'd have thought it the Ramones doing the Doors? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMF8-hKrH8Y http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMF8-hKrH8Y
